I remember how outraged BBI was when Steve Smith signed with the Eagles and hell, even when Kyle Bosworth was claimed off waivers by the Cowboys, but I'm curious how bad the fallout was when Armstead signed with the WFT.
but I kind of remember he was past his prime, he got a big payday and good for him. I don't remember him doing anything for Washington, and the fact that he came back to to Giants family helped restore his place a little.
This doesn't answer your question, but while playing for the Skins, he
encouraged Antonio Pierce, then a Redskin linebacker, to sign with the Giants as a free agent.
Armstead was no longer a Redskin during Pierce’s last season in Washington. But it does seem plausible that he praised the Giants organization to his teammates while he was in DC.
I don’t recall a big outcry when Armstead left. Most fans were realistic about how much he had left, and happy to see Snyder set another sack of cash on fire.

This is how I remember it too. No one really cared
probably a lot like when Justin Tuck went to the Raiders. You felt like Jesse was done so there wasn't a lot of hand-wringing. It was more curiosity to see if he'd perform again.
Little know fact - Armstead actually ended his career with Carolina - although I don't think he ever made it out of camp for them. He got injured and then he either was released or retired.
Barely recall Armstead heading to WAS until reminded

That's my recollection too. It sucked that he was on the WFT, but I didn't begrudge him for signing with them. Also I knew in his heart he was a Giant forever, LOL.
Also, I wasn't outraged that Steve Smith signed with Philly. He was pretty much toast at that point.
I was more annoyed with how he acted after scoring that one TD. Like the Giants were some sort of assholes for not re-signing him. They actually offered him a pretty nice contract extension before he got hurt but he turned them down. So yeah, he had a nice 3 years with the Giants, but was kinda a dick, IMV.
As a rookie, you could see he was going to be something special...
...Armstead was a late round draft pick, but was one of those players that jumped out at you - lightning quick and was ALWAYS around the ball. Knew he was going to be special and really, he was the last great linebacker the Giants drafted themselves.
As has been noted, he was past his prime when he went to the Redskins.
that he was going to wear bright yellow cleats for a game against the Giants,(before things like this were disallowed) and then proceeded to do nothing the entire game...I kinda felt bad for him...almost
When Steve Smith signed with PHI. As I recall, they were negotiating a deal and then he went down with the knee. The Giants were understandably concerned about committing guaranteed money to a WR who already was not a burner coming back from that type injury and Smith wanted a new deal. It's business. I think it was more surprise than outrage and Smith was seen as a core piece prior to the knee.
We had several killer knee injuries in that 2-3 year span.
What a LB crew. I liked all three of them...maybe because I met all three of them. Haha
Barrow was good. Short was good run defender, but terrible in coverage. He shined in some games. Jones on the other hand did nothing well despite being an athlete
I remember hearing on the radio Armstead signed with the (then) Redskins or was going to, and was bummed. It was my dad's birthday and we were on our way for his birthday dinner.
Same with Jacobs ... we were on our way for his birthday dinner and I read LPG's post Jacobs went to the 49ers.
Now I cannot wait until these players are cut from the team lol
We tore up Armstead's 2nd contact after he outperformed it in, I believe, 1997 when we led the league in turnovers forced. I thought he'd be a Giant for life but only if he returned the favor and signed a reasonable contract with us. Couldn't blame him that he didn't.
I recall most thinking he was past his prime as he had slowed down. There was also optimism with Dhani Jones. He quickly squashed that.

I'm around the same age as you and that LB crew brings back memories. That was the first era where I truly "followed" the team (aka knew wtf was going on).
IMO his down year was one year only, 2001. He had a few more years left and should have been a giant for like. His leadership could have come in handy in the 2002 wildcard meltdown.

Do remember he was something like a 7th or 8th pick out of the "U". Not too bad for an All-Pro.

Dhani Jones had some sick bow tiers at least.
