NFT: Tonneau Covers for Trucks

Mark from Jersey : 6/14/2021 7:22 am
I had bought one a year and a half ago (Extang - XCeed) and its already starting to look like garbage. Its the tri-fold type of cover and the material on top of the cover is starting to pull up from the edges.

Assuming this is not covered under warranty I will likely get a new one soon. It seems like all the different company's that make these covers are mostly if not all owned by one larger parent company. That being said I did see that Weathertech has one now and thinking maybe giving that one a try though this could be manufactured by the larger parent and Weathertech just slaps their name on it...will have to look further into that

Anyone else have better luck with a specific style/brand? I like the tri-fold as I occasionally have to put something larger in the bed and like the security of it vs. a soft cover.

On my Tacoma. I'm a little disappointed that it's not 100 percent watertight but it's an acceptable trade off for me because it's easy to open and close and remove if I have to.
You can also drive with it all the way open which is nice.

It's holding up fine after two years.

If there's something better I'd like to know.

My buddy has a roll up one that seems pretty solid but you have to open/close the tailgate in specific order.

Both of my trucks have this cover. Once adjusted correctly it is as waterproof as you can expect and allows you to use the bed when need be without much hassle. The support when needed has been second to none.
68 C10 6ft bed (like this photo) and 19 Silverado 8ft bed.

I had an American Tonneau...

....tri-fold for my last Tundra (current one has rail system so I can’t use it and have to get a new one).

Had it for 2+ years with no issues and it was still in excellent condition. They provide a cleaner/conditioner for it to keep it from drying out. It was pretty inexpensive - around $250 if I recall.
I was in the truck market last year

and had settled on ReTrax. Truck guys I know love theirs.

Amazon 2 years ago for my Tundra and it's been great. I installed it in less than 15 minutes. It seals like a drum. No water leakage. Rolls up easy when needed. I know you said you don't like soft covers, but this thing is pretty tough and can't be opened unless you drop the tailgate. One of the best covers I've ever owned. I've never seen the WeatherTech version, but if they're selling it, it's probably good quality but rather pricey.
Plus 1 for the Bakflip

The last panel flips up to make the entire bed available and they are strong as hell! A couple of years ago I was camping just outside Aspen CO and a bear tried to get into the bed but couldn't get past the Bakflip cover. My buddy had the handle of his GMC ripped off and the door opened but he was never able to access the bed of my truck. Big bear paw prints all over the top of the cover too and not even a sign of a dent. I few claw scratch marks but nothing serious.
I worry about the soft ones

Because it only takes a razor knife to breach them.

but I just factory ordered an F-150, the sales guy suggested not getting a Tonneau secondary market instead of from them.

Same recommendations on here work for F-150?

I mean he suggested NOT getting it from the dealership - and getting it from secondary market
Tonneau covers are nice

as long as you are able to do your initial install when it is warm out, otherwise, good luck stretching it out.

the hard covers are expensive and heavy, it lowered the back of my truck a couple inches and looked dumpy.
Truxedo sentry

I have a truxedo sentry ct on my 2020 ram 1500. I really like it. I got the flat mat fabric over the glossy vinyl option (similar to a convertible top). It rolls up easily, is pretty secure, has held up to a few feet of snow and 14hr at a time road trips. It also unlatches from the rails pretty easily in case you need use of all of your bed space. When rolled up, it takes about 10 inches of space above the rails.

I really wanted a retrax, but I have a short bed and didn’t like the amount of bed space that the retrax canister uses. The Sentry has been a great compromise so far.
