Question about the first round in 2019: The Giants had three picks: 6th, 17th, and 30th, right? They also really wanted to get Daniel Jones and Dexter Lawrence. Was there any chance they could have gotten someone like Montez Sweat with the 17th pick and used the 30th on Dexter Lawrence instead of Deandre Baker? I mean, how many teams are looking for a prospective nose tackle in the first round?
And I believe specifically for Baker, iirc
You could say that about any draft though when you dissect them. Lawrence at 17 was a good value pick though and around where he was projected to go, if not a bit of a steal.
The fact that Saint Andy took a chance on him last year after the crap he pulled the prior offseason is testament that the player is talented but crazy. Reid never seems to mind the crazy part as long as it helps him win games.
Baker, Byron Murphy, Rock Ya-Sin, Bunting, Mullen, Joejuan Williams, Greedy Williams are all on the board.
And the calculus that says Deandre Baker is so much better than one of these other players + 2 picks, we have to make a move.
2. We should have never traded up at all. If we stayed put we could have gotten one of my guys and Sweat's college teammate Elgton Jenkins... he's an All Pro caliber IOL for Green Bay right now.
2: DeAndre Baker – Georgia – 5’11/193
Grade: 83
Summary: Baker was a three year starter for the Bulldogs that progressively improved as a prospect from the beginning of 2017. The two-time all SEC defender (1st Team in 2018) brings the kind of confidence and swagger that can take on the numerous challenges of playing cornerback in the NFL. He can be left alone on an island and stick with anyone on all levels of the route tree as well as make plays on the ball like a receiver. His issues can be correctable, mainly the technique-based and mental ones. The lack of power presence can be an issue at times but in a league where contact is allowed less and less in coverage, the corners that can get the job done via instincts, agility, and speed stand out a bit more.
*Another safe pick here that may have a limited upside, but at this position you just want reliable. That is Baker is a nutshell. I love the competitive spirit, the swagger he shows on the outside. Do I trust him against a Michael Thomas on an island? Probably not. But at the end of the day that isn’t the job of a #1 corner on most teams. He can fit in to any coverage scheme and any role, right away.
*******
Sy on Dexter Lawrence also the #2 DT
2: Dexter Lawrence – Clemson – 6’4/342
Grade: 85
Summary: Junior entry. A blue chip recruit that made an impact right away, winning the ACC Freshman of the Year Award in 2016. He then went on to earn two straight 1st Team All ACC placements even though his production wasn’t anything noteworthy. Lawrence can be a missing piece to a defense that struggles against the run. His mere presence demands attention from multiple bodies and he is no slouch when it comes to pursuing the ball. Even though he is almost always the biggest and most powerful player on the field, Lawrence needs to shore up techniques and be more consistent. He is not an every down player, but certainly one that can dominate in stretches.
*If there is one non-QB I think NYG may be looking at with their 17th pick, it’s Lawrence. He fits the bill with what Gettleman wants up front and the trade of Harrison left that NT role wide open. Lawrence was the piece that made that loaded Clemson front go. I can remember seeing him play as a true freshman and at that moment in time, I said he was ready for the NFL. There is a rare combination of size, speed, and power to go along with more awareness and intelligence than you may think. Big time potential here that can change a defense right away.
NFL Comparison: Haloti Ngata / RET
While it may still be a great draft when we look back down the road......it could have been a first round for the ages.
DG is human. We like to think he is a robot, a curmudgeon....but in reality he is human...He took a chance and it backfired with Baker. It may backfire with Jones.
However, it still could turn out to be a draft that started us on our long playoff run in the 2020's!
I was not happy with the Baker pick. The Giants should have drafted OL, or if they really viewed CB as a need they should waited and taken the best available with their 2nd rounder.
Trading up for a short, slow CB when he was not clearly better than the others was not smart. And that's before we all learned that character and work ethic issues.

I guess you are ignoring the fact that Baker is neither short nor slow. 5'11" is average height and 193 is solid weight for a CB. Bradberry is slow but does pretty well(for example). Character issues - have not yet seen any proof of character issues besides a few people here that keeping saying he had character issues. Nobody pointed out character issues at the time or shortly thereafter. The pick was a good pick that went south. It happens all the time.

Yea I agree I don't think you can kill the Giants for selecting Baker...my gripe is more about trading up for him when you are 7 picks away and there are a cluster of about 4 guys on the board who most graded out to be low first/early second round talents.
I wanted RYS myself (who wouldn't have been available at 37), but there was a glut of CBs at that point in the draft, including Baker.
(I'm also one of those who vehemently believes Baker was not a bad pick at the time...the trade up bothers me more, considering there were so many CBs on the board at that time).
With all our holes, I don't think I'd have traded down but I also don't know the Giants value board.
