Fake NBA superstar
trueblueinpw : 6/18/2021 3:05 pm : link
Can’t remember who, but a poster here called Melo a fake NBA superstar and that always seemed to be a good moniker for him. I always surprised by his numbers because he’s never seemed like a factor to any team in terms of winning a title. That aside, I couldn’t care less about Melo’s personal life. And really, who among us doesn’t have a few illegitimate kids floating around the country?

Won a title in college. Reality, in the past 15 years or so in the NBA, most teams have had 2-3 stars. LeBron won shit until he had Wade and Bosh around him. Carmelo in his primet played for some teams that didn't have the talent

Not untrue...

The '12-'13 Knicks were his best shot..really got thrown off their momentum with the whole drama to end the Celtics series..but if they got past the Pacers I think they matched up well with Miami...

With that said...Melo NEVER made the leap defensively that was necessary, IMO.

If the '12-'13 Knicks were really Melo's best shot at a title, I think that only further proves the point that he never really had enough top talent surrounding him.

Who's the 2nd best player on that squad - Tyson Chandler probably? Amare was mostly hurt that year and I don't believe anyone would label JR Smith or Ray Felton as stars or champ-caliber running mates.

That said, you're right that his effort/ability on defense was seemingly never all that good. I know some fans defend that by saying he had to conserve energy to carry the offense and could at least be an average defender when he needed to be but eh...maybe someone with a more precise eye for basketball could comment better on that than I.
This would be so much more impressive...

Such a bad take.
He carried every team he was on, Melo never had a 2nd star much less 3.
LeBron learned early on he need talent around him to win a title.
Durant, Harden, Kyrie, Stef are not winning titles alone.
Melo went his own way and it did not end up with rings.
Melo in his prime was unstoppable at times.
Devastating ISO player, that turn around fade was hard to defend.

You may not like him but he's a not a "fake" superstar - whatever the fuck that means. He's a legit superstar.

From a personal standpoint, he's also a helluva nice guy. And he's not the first, nor the last, athlete who stuck his dick in someone other than his wife.
I could’ve sworn this happened already a few years ago

For sure has the stats and the college title
UConn4523 : 6/18/2021 5:33 pm : link
he’s a shoe in. Just can’t stand him and I think the “fake superstar” label is accurate. MarshMelo was an accurate nickname for him. His tenure as a Knick showed his lack of leadership skills and his ability to put himself above everything else. Just not a guy I’d want on my team.

His age has humbled him since he can’t pull that shit anymore but when he was at his peak I couldn’t stand how he carried himself.
I'm not questioning Melo the person...
bw in dc : 6/18/2021 6:04 pm : link
I'm questioning his status as a great player. Sure, he could fill up buckets.

But he was/is a classic me-first gunner. And his stats tell the story - top ten in history shot with attempts, yet only 2.8 assists per game in his career on 2.5 TOVs per game.

Not very flattering.

How is he overrated? Half the people here are shitting on him because he didn’t lead a team to an NBA championship without a 2nd star, let alone a 3rd star. Something that LeBron never did. Durant never did. Curry never did. Shit, MJ never did it. He had Pippen, and Rodman for 3. Yeah, I guess you can so he’s overrated because people think he’s so good he should have single-handedly taken those teams to some titles. Kobe had Shaq. Duncan had Parker and Ginobili (and Robinson some). Nowitzki had Kidd and Marion. Wade in his first title had Shaq, Mourning, and Payton.

He played one year of college ball. He had a second star in Gerry McNamara. He never played in the NBA, but was a star in college. They won a title.

For the life of me, please tell me why Carmelo is the only player who is held to the standard of having to carry his team to a title.

I'm not going to bang on a drum & declare Melo to be top 30 or whatever of all time, but the man is a HOFer without ?. It's not even a debate. Also, it's not the NBA HOF...it's the Basketball HOF so his time @ 'Cuse-where he won a title in his sole season-matters. Were you going to win an NBA title with Melo as your top dog? No, but you could say that about a lot of HOFers. And again, when Mitch Fucking Richmond is in Springfield, Melo will be too. The NBA lets everyone in, but Melo deservedly belongs there.

I'm one of those who thinks Melo is actually underrated with all the arrows he's gotten over the years. He was The Man on some very good Nuggets teams in a stacked West...took the '08-'09 Lakers to Game 6 of the WCF...revitalized basketball in NY...found his place in Portland as a spark off the bench. He made 6 All NBA Teams, meaning he was top 15 guy in the league during a really good era talent wise.

T-Mac's career is interesting because summer of 2000, Magic sign him & Hill & it looks like Orlando will be a force again in the league, with McGrady being Robin to Hill's Batman. And then injuries just derail Hill's career. Because of the injuries, people forget how damn good Grant Hill was before his body started betraying him. He was a beast.

I remember there was talk that summer about Duncan going to the Magic too, though I can't recall if that was a longshot or a live possibility.

You hate that he’s going to the HOF, but it’s not personal. So he doesn’t deserve it? He is a 10 time all-star and 6 time all-NBA. In one year of college, he was a 2nd team All-American as a freshman, won a title, and was Most Outstanding Player in the Final Four. His Olympic accomplishments were noted above.

He's a HOFer &-putting Knicks fandom aside-Reggie Miller is one of the more overrated dudes I've seen as an NBA fan, which begins circa '90. He made the ASG five times. Five. He never made a First or Second Team All NBA. Yeah, I'm not going to dispute he was clutch in crunch time, but the way some people talk about him...you'd think he was one of the best players of the '90s. I was there. He wasn't.
