NFT: BIG SUMMER IS HERE! What's everybody got planned?

Beezer : 6/21/2021 9:18 am
Summer is way too short in the Northeast. I know we all stretch it as much as we can, but it'll be football season before we know it (not at all a bad thing). But every summer it feels more and more like there's a push to fit in as much as possible while the weather's warm, the kids (when they're young-ish) are "off" from whatever level of school they attend, etc. etc.

What's fun in your summer plans?

24 years after we went for our honeymoon. Taking our 18 and 20 year old kids who will be tasked with trimming sails and interacting with their parents instead of their cell phones for 10 days.

A trip to Cleveland this weekend for a memorial service for my mother in law who passed last fall.

Moving our son out into a place with his friends near U of Maryland for his senior year and down to Nashville to take our daughter to college. Empty Nesters by the end of August.

Come back for a week, then the wife, son and dogs head to Ohio for three weeks. Got the house all to myself for three weeks (this is the real vacation). Having some high school buddies over one weekend, the rest will be spent kayak/fishing on the Potomac.

Your last line made me click on your profile. Was just in Arlington last week (business and personal). My sister lives in Clarendon.

Clarendon is a great spot. Is she still in her 20/30's? I moved when I was 38. Kept my condo in Ballston and rent it out. That area is fantastic for younger professionals. I really miss those days.
she just turned 40

they have 2 young kids and were house searching but stopped for a bit. They are in a 3 bedroom near the clarendon metro so its peak location, but buying has been a major chore with the price surge. I think they will settle on moving out of Clarendon the question is how far.

I love visiting though, hoping to get down with the family this fall after the weather breaks.
Being in California, summer extended

Going to do Carmel by the sea in July ( Airbnb) for 4 nites
Avila beach in sept for 3 nites
Maybe go visit a good friend from high school (40 yrs ago) August
-go be teenagers again for a few nights ( put on the gloves and spar with each other, watch pacquio/ Spence, maybe check out a metal show) and KISS at shoreline theater in September, just because when your 12 in the KiSS army, you’re alway to the army)
Will do MAUI for 8 nights end of October too.
And if I can, go visit Hudson valley ( where I lived for 40 yrs) again ( was there last month) in sept because I love autumn during football season. Miss the smelll of the leaves and the chill staring in air late September
Oh yea, this is a tough time to jump back into the market
bradshaw44 : 6/21/2021 12:51 pm : link
Especially around there. She is definitely right in the heart of party town. You have all the best shops, bars, restaurants right there. You can also walk into G-town if you aren't lazy. Only about 2 miles straight down Wilson blvd.

There is also a lot of great bike/running trails around there, if you're into that stuff.

I lived there for 18 years (2000-2018). How long has she been there? She's my age, I wonder if I know her.

But I did go to Arcadia last week solo and it was great!!!!
ohh yeah, she's been there for the last 7 or 8 years
UConn4523 : 6/21/2021 1:30 pm : link
before that a couple other spots in Fairfax county. She went to JMU so she's been in VA since 1999.

Love Georgetown, we walked over last time we visited pre-kids. Love the nightlife down there. Now its low-key, kid friendly visits.
Summer always feels too short
aimrocky : 6/21/2021 2:02 pm : link
and this year feels worse than ever for me. WFH and new management has resulted in serious breach of personal time. The few days that I've been off, I've had some form of work contact because of pressure from the head of our department. The worst part is that we lost the ability to carry our time over, so the pressure is resulting in lost time. I have 10 days off to travel in a few weeks and I already have anxiety about what kind of work I'll be expected to do.

Because of this, I haven't really put in for vacations, besides that one in a few weeks. I need to start doing a better job of pushing back, but I also don't want our leadership to view me as unwilling to work. It's a tricky spot...
I know what you mean.
bradshaw44 : 6/21/2021 2:04 pm : link
Plenty for kids to do too, as I’m sure you know.

I think I'm going to go to Mount Rushmore though. That's the only vicinity in this country that I haven't been to. might as well get it over with.

at the Rockaway Hotel. Looks lovely and I don’t have the work time for more than a 4 day vacation given how my work is until October. I’m looking forward to it, though!

The airport/airplane is the main place where I watched all of those poorly edited, blotchy, forgettable films about "unusual" events occuring around the house. I also got some catching up to do with traveling being the naughty thing to do for the last year and change!
You sure complain a lot
UConn4523 : 6/21/2021 5:39 pm : link
can’t change the last year plus, no sense dwelling on it. This summer is open, you can have some fun, or not. Up to you.

Because I don't care for 95-100 degree weather and crappy remakes? Okay I will dial it back with the open discourse since you're so vulnerable to anybody giving an opinion who doesn't agree with you.

Festival in Eau Clair, WI in August and then on to my buddy's home in Montana to hang for a while. Did the drive out there last summer and loved it. Came back through Sturgis/Deadwood/Omaha/St. Lous/WV and home. Long day drives, but enjoyable.

Two years ago I retired from a long career in teaching & coaching, but I was counting on work as a speaker/storyteller both for income and for the joy. Just as I was beginning to get some gigs, Covid arrived and everything got wiped out. So now I'm trying to regroup. If I can land arrange some talks, I'll consider it FUN - really. If not, then not much fun this summer - really.

We're not planning any vacation, partly because the only place we like to go in the summers is Nova Scotia, and it remains closed.

CAMPING.
x meadowlander : 6/22/2021 10:06 am : link
We upgraded our camper and pickup over the last year, have trips planned all over NY State through Jersey Shore. We've already gone on 2 trips, have 5 more planned, most long weekends, ALL on either ocean or Lake Ontario beaches.

I'm particularly excited about a site I booked on the beach at Sea Girt, NJ. A military base - working for gov't has it's perks.
