I was going to mention this one. My co-worker absolutely loves this and I had to try it, it was definitely really good. The sauce is a little different so maybe not everyone's favorite, but some people go crazy for it.
From Portnoy...

Pizza Sam in Jackson Heights
Trattoria L'Incontro in Astoria
Amore pizzeria in Flushing

All over 8 out of 10

I'd be comfortable trying any of them

don't think overall Queens has much of a pizza reputation. Queens likely has the best variety of food/cuisines anywhere in the city but pizza (and granted I only lived in LIC and have explored Astoria, Flushing etc) but you don't usually hear pizza as the Queens standout.

No doubt. But there is still good pizza to be had. Its not a pizza wasteland like many areas outside the tristate area.
Not
DanMetroMan : 6/22/2021 4:04 pm : link
Queens but I really like both East Village and east village square pizzas... where else... the east village, really like Williamsburg Pizza (the one in the East Village surprisingly closed), people love Best Pizza but I wasn't blown away (granted it was after a long night out so I don't think that's completely fair).

I've only at Di Fara at the North 3rd market location so while I was very underwhelmed I don't really count it, NY Pizza Suprema was named the #1 pizza in the city by some pizza blogger, I thought despite all of the buzz Prince St. pizza sucked, but I will say it was during the height of Covid so things were weird in terms of production aka I think my slice was sitting there for a while.

Oh, I don't doubt that's the case. Just as great as Queens is for food you don't usually hear people raving specifically about XYZ which is somewhat surprising given how many OG locals still live in many of the neighborhoods. I have zero good pizza places by me (well, Roberta's but that's "fancy" pizza) zero good slice shops I should say.

Agree on the above recommendation for Sac's Place as well.
There's a new spot called Bellucci
GiantSteps : 6/22/2021 4:13 pm : link
in LIC that's supposed to be pretty bangin'. I believe the owner has ties to the Lombardi family tradition of pizza making, which dates back to the first officially recognized pizza place in the USA.

I haven't been there, but it looks pretty good on Instagram.

Sotto le Stelle is a legit great Neapolitan pizza restaurant. It's not a slice joint at all, but really good pizza if you're looking to sit down. Owned by a bunch guys from Italy.

Philomena's Pizza is the best NY style pizza place in Sunnyside in my opinion. It's phenomenal.

Sunnyside Pizza is a total solid neighborhood pizza spot, but not something I'd travel for. The two earlier ones I mentioned are def worth a visit.

Agreed on both counts. It wasn't clear to me if the OP is from Queens or looking to visiting Queens. Sotto le Stelle is worth going out of your way but if you live nearby you can't go wrong with Sunnysize pizza. Will also add if you are in Sunnyside the Turkish and Lebanaese food is where it is at.

I've lived in Queens my whole life.

Born and raised in Glendale/Ridgewood area.

I now live in Astoria/LIC.

1. Rosa's Pizzeria on 69th Street or the one on Fresh Pond Road. Get the Sicilian upside down slice or the grandma. You'll thank me.

2. Grace Pizza on Myrtle Avenue. Just a notch below, but I stopped going there because the owner is an asshole.

3. You are also close enough to go to Roberta's, which is in Bushwick. Houdini Kitchen Laboratory isn't bad either and there is a brewery down the block.

Incontro is a sit down Italian place, I've never actually had pizza there. But the food is fantastic.

Sac's Place pizza stinks and Bellucci's is which is now "all the rage" is so overrated it makes my head spin. He put vodka sauce on a pepperoni pie and somehow that's life changing. It's also really expensive.

Milkflower is okay, but it's more of sit-down place and not a slice shop. Same with Le Sotto La Stelle.

New Park pizza sucks. fight me.

Very good pizza.

I've been going to the Rosa's II on 78th and Metropolitan since the late '80s. I wager Rosa's I on 69th is more or less the same, as I've been there maybe once or twice.

Fantastic Sicilian indeed. If I may be a homer for this part of Queens, I'd say the best Sicilian I've ever had anywhere (and that includes two weeks in Sicily). Even better than Spumoni Gardens, which is really good, but for a fresh Sicilian pie, Rosa's is better. They just nailed the sauce/cheese integration in a way nobody else has been able to measure up to.

So unless you live in that part of Brooklyn, no reason to go out there for Sicilian slices (other stuff, sure).

Rosa's makes a good eggplant slice too. Everything they make there is good, but Sicilian is championship. Umberto's is maybe the closest one for Sicilian, very close.

Last thing I'll say about Rosa's II is that it's biggest claim to fame sadly is that it's the pizzeria location used in Billions. And probably more because it's close to the studios they shoot in than anything else, but a lot of pride seeing it on the show as it's absolutely deserving.

And it's interesting for all these nitpicking cats like Portnoy and general NYC slice elitists, there is like essentially 3 or 4 places in all of the NYC metro area that make a Sicilian of championship caliber. The drop off is significant after that.

Meanwhile, a good slice can be found in a lot of places. Lots of places.

As for the thin crust high end, Nick's Pizza in Forest Hills is really good. Portnoy reviewed it and liked it. Didn't give it ultra high marks, because he's Portnoy, but I found it good enough that you didn't need to go all the way down to Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn Bridge to be in the same galaxy.

I ate at Sorbillo in Napoli two years ago and would say that's probably the best pizza I've ever had in my life. But even with all that said, it's not 20 times better than anything else listed here.

I would be curious about Sorbillo in Manhattan.

pjcas18 : 6/22/2021 7:30 pm : link
nitpicking?

He's reviewed more pizza than anyone on the planet, but he has his style that he likes and his ratings show it.

he's never reviewed Rosa's from what I can tell, but what should be concerning (if it's the same place - 21st street in Astoria) is the customer reviews on the one bite app give it a 6.7 average review. no bueno. Though, just 13 reviews so who knows.

but people like what they like, so if you like it that's all that matters (well you and enough people to keep them in business).

And Portnoy
pjcas18 : 6/22/2021 7:40 pm : link
DID give Nick's "ultra high" marks, he gave them an 8.4 - highest in Queens (tied with Pizza Sam and Tratorria L'Incontro) - that's in his top 75 all time. Anything from him 7.5 or over is good, over an 8 is very good.

I didn't know Forest Hills was Queens or I would have included them with his other Queens reviews.

that one should be top of the list in Queens - and there could have been others I missed because I don't know all the Queens neighborhoods and they don't say "Queens" - it says Astoria, or Forest Hills, Jackson Heights, or Flushing, etc.

Nicks is ok, been going there a long time, but sometimes, its just too damn burned. I like it crispy but not all charred. They are inconsistent imo. Their house salad though is the bomb.

There's no bad pizza, at least in my hood. We go to PIzza Classica on Union Tpke, really good margherita pie and the eggplant slice is really good.

Yeah, that's the same Rosa's spot but gotta go to the OG spots in Ridgewood/Maspeth. It does taste a bit different there.

But his ratings
pjcas18 : 6/23/2021 9:53 am : link
compare cheese pizza not Sicilian or other varieties so it's hard to fault him. Many times, if people recommend something a place is famous for, he will try it and comment on it, but he rates the cheese pizza. Example is Pepe's white clam pie (not my favorite) or Modern Italian Bomb - etc. one place was famous for cannoli so he tried it during the review.

Plus, my opinion, and this is just my opinion and everyone can have their own, but Sicilian pizza is a slight, very slight, notch above Stouffers frozen french bread pizza. it's trash.

It is overboard.

In fairness an average Sicilian slice is pretty average. I almost never eat them at such places.

But when it's top notch, it's incredible. The Sicilian slices literally do not even look the same (the shitty ones are mostly cheese on top with sauce beneath, while the good ones look like they were baked in marinara sauce with the cheese forged together.

And then there's the thickness too. It's the true deep dish pizza Chicagoans wish they had. :D

I haven't tried them. On my list, I have very little NY pizza experience outside of Manhattan. I would like to go on a pizza tour of NYC (all the boroughs that have famous places) but there are just too many places. It's probably why NY people think NY pizza is the best. It's everywhere.

But...Lazzara's (not far from MSG) is head and shoulders above the competition that I have tried.

Love Grandma, let me know the best in Queens.

We always get a Grandma pie from Positano in New Hyde park.

Rosa's. Go to the Ridgewood/Maspeth one. Those are the OG.

You live in Forest Hills?

I'm not who you asked, but I'll add that when I first moved to NY 20 years ago I lived in Forest Hills across the street from Lillian Pizzeria on 69th Ave. Went back a couple years ago and it was a solid slice.

and Sunnyside pizza

Sotto le Stelle is a legit great Neapolitan pizza restaurant. It's not a slice joint at all, but really good pizza if you're looking to sit down. Owned by a bunch guys from Italy.

Philomena's Pizza is the best NY style pizza place in Sunnyside in my opinion. It's phenomenal.

Sunnyside Pizza is a total solid neighborhood pizza spot, but not something I'd travel for. The two earlier ones I mentioned are def worth a visit.

We ended up at Philomena's in Sunnyside. BeezKid had read some review online - great reviews. Met Dave the owner and June his wife. They work the place and Dave makes all the pies that come outta there.

I'm old and have had far more pizza than the average human. I consider myself a pizza snob.

Philomena's was among the very best pies I've ever enjoyed.

My tastes align with Portnoy's, so given that, and having watched many of his reviews, I have no doubt Philomena's would be 8.4/8.5 or even a notch higher.

If you're in that area, it's right on Queens Boulevard.

Also, a nod to Courtyard Ale House, just a couple doors down from Philomena's. Terrific old-school Irish pub owned by James the bartender's Dad.
