NFT: Post lottery Knicks/NBA talk.

larryflower37 : 6/23/2021 1:11 pm
Detroit won the Cade sweepstakes.
Toronto hitting the 4th spot they get to draft their replacement for Lowery.
It will be interesting to see if the Knicks can package picks and move up and if they even want to?
Hopefully a PG slips down in range of the Knicks.

Will GS trade 7 and 14 for a Vet to help them win now or build for post Curry?

Less than a month to the draft and rumors are flying around.

I'd be plenty happy with Lowry on a short deal if there are no "big" moves coming.

Would he take a big 1 year deal or 2 with an option?

I still wanted to punch that guy pulling the cards (Mark Tatum?) in the face. But I agree, I felt like there was a lot less attention paid to it without Twitter being able to clown the Knicks on dropping, though maybe I'm paranoid.
My Magic's can't catch a break...

We low balled Shaq in FA, traded Penny for Pat Garrity and Danny Manning, traded prime T-Mac for a washed Steve Francis, traded D12 to LA for nothing, traded Oladipo AND Sabonis for Serge Ibaka! Now we traded Vuc for the 8th pick which isn't too bad but God damn it im tired of my favorite basketball team... I wanted 1 and 5 but we get 5 and 8, figures, we'll suck forever. Might as well trade for Ben Simmons, we can fix 76er #1 overall draft picks if anything. Rant over.
We feel Orlando's pain.
bceagle05 : 6/23/2021 2:35 pm : link
Knicks haven't moved up in the lottery in 30+ years, and it sucks to have to pin your hopes on that. Kuminga and someone like Davion Mitchell wouldn't be the worst thing though.

I like both but with Randle and Toppin can you play either at center?
I know you don't draft for need but I would be pretty disappointed if we don't get either a 3-D wing and/or PG.
I would take a true center to play next to Randle also .
can the kid from Australia play NBA PG?

Can't jump, not great speed, generally not a killer athlete.
But he looks like he can play basketball. If he's around when the knicks pick he might be worth the gamble.

If TOR moves on, him at 2/50 seems very reasonable. Miami might be interested too and can have cap space. PHL also could be interested but less obvious how they would get him (presumably sign and trade).

By "option" do you mean player option or team option?

I asked last night in the other thread b/c I wasn't sure: are there "option" years that can be both? i.e. both the player and team have to opt in? Seems like that might be attractive to Lowry for the 2nd year. If the numbers and guaranteed $ are big enough.

I think Garuba has a shot to be a pretty high level defensive player (who has also shown 3 point range AND the ability to handle). It's quite obvious the Knicks have multiple needs but they also are clearly not a high level team in terms of athletes or man defenders. Garuba is a 3-4-5. Where the Knicks pick you have to go BPA or you risk drafting a complete slug because you reached,

2021 Draft Profile - Usman Garuba
Kyle Boone CBS Sports - June 21st: "Garuba is a smidge undersized as an NBA center but categorized as a "big" and looking at his production overseas, there's a lot to like about his NBA upside, particularly as a defender."

Chad Ford - NBA Big Board - June 18: "Garuba shows promise as a high-motor, athletic big who can rebound and defend. He has a chance to be the best defensive big man in this draft."

NBA Draft Room - June 18th: "The high energy defender and rebounder who has an emerging offensive game."

Ricky O'Donnell SB Nation - June 17: "Garuba is one of the best defensive prospects in this class as a burly forward who is light on his feet and can stick with a variety of different types of players."

Tyler Byrum and Chase Hughes NBC Sports - June 14: "Offensive limitations are preventing Garuba from getting into the lottery range. Most of his scoring comes from dunks and buckets around the rim. He has shown promise from establishing a shot, but not nearly enough."

Kevin O'Connor The Ringer - June: "Switchable defender with the bulk to handle bigger players and the agility to match up against quicker wings and even guards. He’s aware and does a good job of using his hands to shut passing windows."

Jonathan Givony ESPN - May 25: "Garuba, one of the most intense and versatile defenders in this draft class."

Knicks obviously need a PG but the smart play is take the BPA's, load up on young talent (and trade chips) and remain patient. The oldest player signed through next season is Norvel Pelle

I've heard from a solid source/writer the expectation is the Knicks are 100% going to be packaging picks, that Kevin Knox is "gone" if anybody offers even a 2nd or their Knox and that the Knicks remain high on Obi. I asked about Vildoza and got "somebody with the Knicks obviously likes him but there are FO members who barely seem to know who he even is". So it sounds like he was somebodies pet project etc (doesn't mean he won't be good).
Should be a fun offseason.
bceagle05 : 6/23/2021 4:58 pm : link
If nothing else, we'll be involved in every trade and free agent rumor out there, even if it is just #knicksforclicks or agents trying to drum up interest.

My expectations are modest - just get a legit starting PG and find bench upgrades for guys like Knox and Frank. Hopefully Vildoza is one piece to that puzzle. My hope is to stay in that 4-6 range of the playoff bracket next season.
We have three clear slots to upgrade...
manh george : 6/23/2021 5:38 pm : link
imo, assuming that we get to keep some of our own FA.

Starting pg, good-sized 3 who can shoot, and backup center who can shoot. With decent luck, we get one of the first two in the draft after trading up and the other in FA or a trade.

I suspect that there is a decent chance that we package our two first-round picks to move up, but possibly hang on to the 32nd pick. There are often lots of back-up centers floating around at that point in the draft. Shooting guards, too.

Screw LeFraud. The best part about what’s happening right now in the playoffs is that 3 of the 4 teams are mostly teams built up through the draft with a few shrewd additions mixed in. It gives me hope as a Knicks fan. But for LeFraud, because of what HE started, thinks he now needs to add Steph Curry to himself and AD to win a championship. GOAT my ass. Maybe convince Doncic to ask for LA too? Would that help LeBron win another “title”? Disgusting.

Trae is gonna struggle trying to run the pick & roll against Holiday and Giannis. Holiday in general will be tough, and if it's Lopez instead of Giannis Trae at least has a chance, but not Holiday and Giannis. Holiday has elite lateral quickness, and Giannis isn't gonna back up like Embiid did because he has more quickness than Embiid. I thought Simmons and Embiid were a great combo to guard Trae/Capela/Collins in that pick and roll, and they did a good job, but not good enough. I think Holiday and Giannis will be better. And if you take away that float/lob game from Trae, he doesn't have much in terms of scoring. He's a 33% 3-shooter, he's not beating the Bucks with his 3s. He can facilitate and try to beat them that way but are the Hawks really going to win a 7 game series without that deadly pick & roll float/lob game working for them? I don't see it.
How good do you guys think Quickley can be?
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 6/23/2021 8:55 pm : link
I’ve heard him compared to Lou Will, but he’s a better shooter so I think he has an even higher ceiling than that. His floater game is also on point. He really needs to attack the rim more though, that would open up his game and make him a 3 level scorer which is so valuable against good defenses.
There is no doubt
PhilSimms15 : 6/23/2021 9:21 pm : link
That the Knicks will either bundle picks to move up or use picks in a trade. No way does Thibs want three rookies to add to all the young players the Knicks already have.

They have a long list of guys 26 and under: Randle, RJ. Robinson, Quick, Obi, Knox, Frank (if they bring him back), and Luca. Eight guys. It wouldn’t surprise me if they traded all of the picks to avoiding a rookie to the roster.

Lacob is a pretty arrogant SOB. If memory holds, I think he's been the Dubs owner since 2009 or 2010. He also was the dude who bragged to the NYT that the Warriors were 'light years' ahead of the rest of the NBA. The Warriors have a great fan base, but a lot of their diehards have been priced out over the years & now especially with them being at Chase.

Playoffs have been fun.
Budenholzer
Leg of Theismann : 6/23/2021 11:06 pm : link
is a horrible coach. McMillan has been making everyone his bitch in these playoffs.

I hate Trae Young and the Hawks more than any team I've ever hated at a single time. I hate them so much. I do think if they make it to the Finals the Suns will dispose of them, but I've been saying that about every team they move onto next for the last 3 series and I seem to be wrong every time. They do flat out play hard for 48 minutes in the postseason. I wish I could've said the same thing for the Knicks (other than Rose and Taj of course).

By the way-- Middleton is brutal. How the hell is he a 2x all star? He just seems to have like 1 good game every 10 games and yet he's still considered the 2nd banana on the Bucks and is one of their main offensive staples. He doesn't get enough criticism when the Bucks struggle. Like I know he shoots like 28% on the road, but if you're a good "home" player you have to at least show up at home in the ECF. HE was the difference. Giannis did fine and I had no problem with his approach to this game and how he played. Holiday had an incredible game. All Middleton had to do have an average night and the Bucks win. Instead of course he had to make up for Giannis and Holiday having decent nights by being absolutely awful. Actually just looked it up he did literally shoot 28%.
Meant to say:
Leg of Theismann : 6/23/2021 11:08 pm : link
Holiday had a great game OFFENSIVELY. Not so great defensively, but 1) who does have a good game against Trae defensively, 2) I still blame Budenholzer to some extent for being such a simpleton.
I actually am starting to think
Leg of Theismann : 6/23/2021 11:13 pm : link
The Hawks could literally win this series on coaching alone. McMillan has proved to be a fantastic coach-- I know his guys have been playing well but it's to hard to put a finger on any real bad moves his made this postseason. He had to coach a near perfect series to beat the Sixers and he coached a perfect game tonight. On top of that Budenholzer is a horrendous basketball mind. I was thinking this would be a fairly easy gentleman's sweep for the Bucks just based on the the matchups and rosters but I wasn't considering the massive gap in the coaching.
They showed the stats this morning on some show.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 6/23/2021 11:15 pm : link
Giannis has been pretty consistent win or loss in this postseason.

When the Bucks lose, Middleton’s numbers are horrendous. Absolutely fucking horrendous. When they win, his numbers are excellent.
I was slightly off
Leg of Theismann : 6/23/2021 11:17 pm : link
Middleton shot 26% tonight. And 0/9 from 3...

its not just the shit talking, it is the constant whining yo officials, flopping all over the place, intiating the contact and getting the call every single time...

Enzo : 6/24/2021 8:14 am : link
it's not just that he's a talker. Lots of guys talk. It's also because he's one of the main reasons the league is probably going to to change the rules on players drawing fouls via "unnatural motions". Good for him for exploiting existing rules, but it's not exactly endearing to fans of other teams to watch him hunt for fouls via flopping and contorting his body into defenders who are often just standing still - and then get rewarded for it.
