last 10 games: .325 BA (13-40) with 9 runs, 2 doubles, 6 HR, and 13 RBI

also on a 5g hitting streak:
10/24
5 singles
5 xbh (4 homers, 1 2b)
3 bb: 5k

obviously the power is going to be streaky and come back down to earth but I think we've seen enough of it to know it's going to be there in some capacity. imo the most important thing is that we continue to see those peripherals stabilize over the rest of the year. Add the raw power to a better contact profile and he's going to be the next guy on all the top 100 lists again.

What are the chances he gets pushed to Sunday?

That was the worst play by play call I’ve heard in my life.

Nice to see him breaking out a bit. Wish we could somehow trade one of these guys for a SP prospect of similar value. Is there an organization that has 4-5 good pitching prospects but not position player guys?
prospect for prospect trades are rare and honestly P prospects are way
Eric on Li : 6/25/2021 10:31 am : link
more risk than position players. Of course if someone offered a really good one I'd listen but even then imagine if someone offered us the next Szpuck right before TJS, or even Matt Allan? Position players are just so much more likely to be on the field.

Right now Vientos is tracking to hit closest to JDD of all our recent hitting prospects - the trickiest part of the comp is just the fact that JDD was 23 when he first hit AA and 26 when first acquired here.

Vientos is 21 years old, off a chaotic lost season for everyone and jump up from A ball to AA skipping A+, and on track for a 20+ homer, 50 xbh, .800+ ops season. So while JDD was also a prolific exit velocity player with a similar power offense/weak defense profile, youth may give Vientos some extra upside. Imagine he was having this season last year at age 20 in AA?

I'm pretty sure other than JDD, the only other hitter we've had in these last 10+ years that hit 20+ homers in any minor league season is Alonso. Conforto's most were 12 in the 90 games prior to getting called up to big leagues in 2015. But when thinking about trading him I think it's important to keep in mind how we'd have valued JDD/Dom/Alonso/Conforto at age 21 because Vientos looks like he may be the next prospect on that level. There's no guarantee he reaches that level but to deal him I'd have to get back a player who makes a big enough impact that it's understandable if he does (sort of like Fulmer for Cespedes).

The issue for the Mets is while pitchers break, they don't have much in the way of interesting SP prospects so if an interesting arm is offered for a position prospect you have to consider it. That being said, we need to get to the point where we are like the Dodgers and have depth level prospects we can call on to fill holes and deal in minor trades. Very excited for the upcoming draft, last year I mostly checked out but this year I've really enjoyed the minors and draft "research".

Williams has rejected minor league assignment and is now a FA.
this is an unscientific observation without much research but
Eric on Li : 6/25/2021 12:30 pm : link
if you think about it, if you are developing pitchers, and let's say the average development time is:
3-5 seasons in the minors in hopes of a
3-5 year window of performing in the big leagues

you have double the injury risk compared to adding veteran pitchers already in the majors because there's twice as much time they need to stay healthy.

This isn't to say you don't try to add pitchers to develop. Of course you do both and try to add as many highly talented players as possible.

But when you have cost controlled position players or high upside hitting prospects, I think you need to value them higher than pitchers. If you had a 100% equivalent impact pitcher and an equivalent impact hitter, the probability the hitter stays healthy for 5+ seasons compared to the pitcher is just so high.

I'd rather add pitchers at the expense of paying higher prices in FA while prioritizing development of homegrown hitters than vice versa.

really need to do both. Part of the reason the Dodgers have been able to spend so big on position players is/was having Buehler, Urias, May, Gonsolin, Martinez all on the cheap. The Mets are essentially tapped out in terms of MLB SP in the upper minors with Megill now up. Szapucki remains, after him it's hard to really say who "next" would be even headed into 2022. If you go with fangraphs top 30 prospects they have 1 single SP prospect in the Mets system with an eta before 2023 (Jose Butto, back end upside, 4.75 era currently in BK). They have some interesting arms in guys like Dominguez, Cornielly and hopefully Ginn by 2023 is able to pitch a full season of innings but the arms just don't exist for backfill.

also has Butto as the only SP prospect in the system with an eta pre-2022 with JT Ginn, Kilome (he's awful), Joander Suarez and Joshua Corneilly (he's 20 and has pitched 35 innings stateside) being the only top 30 SP prospects who aren't currently teenagers

June wRC+ is the 8th highest mark he’s posted for a month in his entire career. This is why chopping up sample sizes into 7 day samples doesn’t work.

The Mets don’t know if Jonathan Villar (calf) will be available today. They’re evaluating him. Because the calf injury is in the same leg as the hamstring tightness he felt earlier this month, the Mets are being extra cautious to ensure the incidents are separate.

I agree you need to do everything you can to develop both. TJS doesn't make me regret drafting Allan any more than the LAD should regret drafting May.

That's a very different point from how to weight positional risk/value in trades.

He should be IL’ed. He’s not 100% and can’t be backdated so he’s only out 7 days

Mets have claimed catcher Chance Sisco off waivers from the Orioles and optioned him to Syracuse. J.D. Davis was transferred to the 60 day injured list, which makes him eligible for a 7/1 return.
