The expansion draft is 7/21.
Next Sunday (7/18) protected lists will be made public
NHL Draft is 7/23 - 7/24
Free Agency opens 7/28
a lot of movement will happen IMO b/c of a lot of factors including the flat cap - teams with cap space can make out like bandits just for taking a bad contract. Tarasenko, Eichel, and more could have new homes not even considering movement to help with the expansion draft or free agency.
This article linked below from THW is great, not sure there is a ton of accuracy to it, but it's still a fun read.

at least we don't need to hear him say 100 times a game "remember that save" every time a goalie makes a save in a close game.
Wasn't Vegas able to build a cup contender from their expansion draft? Do the rules of the draft favor this or did Vegas just do an excellent job? Will Seattle start out in the playoffs every year too?
In fact, I expect that team to be historically bad.
I felt like they had 4 3rd lines, no top end talent, solid D and an inconsistent goalie.
Gallant deserves a ton of credit for getting them to the SCF, but I also underestimated Marc Andre Fleury when he plays well and I underestimated how far having 6 solid D can take you.
They also got career years from players like William Karlsson and Reilly Smith, but some teams misjudged their own talent like MIN trading Alex Tuch as a 6'4 225 pound 21 year old to protect some old stiff.
I may show my ass again, but I don't expect the Kraken to duplicate what Vegas did. but I'll wait to form an opinion (which will probably be a bad one again) until I see their roster

Vegas had an advantage in that many teams had given out No Movement Clauses like candy not knowing what the expansion draft rules would be. After Vegas the amount of NMC's has ground to a halt unless you are talking about the best of the best. Also, I think some teams overvalued their mediocre players more than they should have when Vegas came into the league. Columbus basically gave a 1st to Vegas so they would take Karlsson, who was a key player for Vegas. Teams don't seem as anxious to protect borderline 2nd line players this year if they have someone else in the system who can fill that role.

Wonder how much it'll cost Drury for Seattle to pick up Howden
Wouldnt they want to have DeAngelo around to leave him unprotected for the expansion draft before buying him out? Or is there nothing gained by exposing him
I know not many of my fellow Isles fans would like this but I'd offer up Pelech and Beauvs rights for Seth Jones first. See if Columbus has any interest. if not then bring them back.
Quote:
Obviously they still need to announce Gallant's coaching staff and Drury needs to hire an AGM, but I'm also guessing we hear about a Tony DeAngelo buyout possibly this week.

Yep on the off chance that Seattle takes him he fits the requirement. Rangers are fine they should be looking to pick up players before the ED because right now we would lose someone like Deangelo, Howden, Hajek Blackwell or Gauthier.

I suppose they could and the Rangers aren't in any rush, but I doubt Ron Francis will take DeAngelo. Plus, the Rangers could expose Bitetto and potentially Libor Hajek if they re-sign him this week like they did with Howden last week.
Most D heavy since 2012 I think.
I did read Owen Power, projected #1, is leaning toward returning to Michigan.
After seeing Caufield these playoffs after spending two years in the NCAA I'm not as firm in my belief I'd want the top pick in the NHL. I think maybe that wouldn't be terrible and probably even good for development, but it would hurt having the top pick in the year when the top pick isn't obviously NHL ready.
Sabres can't catch a break. not that it bothers me.

Luke Hughes is also likely going to Michigan for at least a year. I believe two more projected top 10 picks are also committed to Michigan.
I wouldn't buy him out either though. I'd see if Drury being in charge can lead to a reconciliation, even as a bottom pair DeAngelo playing is the best use of resources.
if he can't be moved.
It will save them money this year, but also add more dead space. Probably better off burying him in the minors - it's just one year left. I hate buying out players with one year left. it costs them something like $1.2M to buyout his $4.8M.
Maybe it's worth it, but still not a good outcome.
I don't know about Drury doing an about face with TDA; even if not/never confirmed, smoke was reported coming from the room about player anger/angst (KAM avoiding TDA at center ice intros). With all that he has on his plate, I don't know if Drury needs to perpetuate an apparent headache. Of course, if Drury is more 'gritty' than JD and Gorton, maybe he doesn't mind that stuff. (sarcasm?)

The issue is for all the headaches, DeAnglelo is a similar type of player to what we already have an abundance of, offensively-minded defensemen. And they're cheaper. He's poor in his own end and isn't physical or gritty.
If he were a 6'3" shutdown defenseman or a PK 3rd line shutdown forward, maybe they try giving him a blank slate. I just didn't see what he brings at this point.
@DarrenDreger
Sources indicate the Oilers and Blackhawks are making progress on a trade involving Duncan Keith. Not done. The process is moving along. Both GM’s are involved in league meetings today, however more discussion on the trade is expected.
pj, maybe you should have imposed restrictions on this thread so it does not devolve (degrade?) to a hometown dumpster fire when the bullets start flying and Drury's honeymoon (has he had one?) crashes and burns, or NYI or NJD.
I like a veteran presence, I've been vocal about that, but Keith turns 38 this week and is owed $11M over the next two years and coming off the worst year of his career.
not what I'm talking about with veteran presence.
Unless EDM is getting a high pick to take that contract and/or a young player I don't get it. CHI has traded Panarin and Teravainen (the latter to get rid of Bickell's contract) so will withold judgment until I see the details but I feel like this is EDM feeling like they're adding solid pieces around McDavid and Draisaitl.

lol, I don't care I know it's mostly NYR fans on here. I'll bring the discussion back to more NHL general topics, and closer to the draft, free agency NYR or NYI fans sometimes start their own threads.

Agreed PJ this has classic EDM blunder written all over it.
How dumb is this franchise giving a guy a two-year. $4.8mm per deal and then dumping him eleven games into the season? Idiotic.
And agreed with everyone on Keith. What an absolutely moronic franchise. Rangers blew Lundqvist's career but Edmonton is incompetent. McDavid is going to leave at some point.

Yep hopefully this draft is heading right into the Devs wheelhouse with how deep it is on D at the top. I'm not predicting they'll do it but it wouldn't shock me if Seattle took Subban. He's a good vet presense around the clubhouse and he only has 1 year left at 9 mill. They have to spend to the cap floor. I know they don't want to take on long term big $ deals but he'd fit right in with that philosophy.

Rangers have hired Gord Murphy, Mike Kelly as assistants to join Gallant's staff, Post has learned. Both have prior experience with Gallant. Blueshirts still seeking third assistant.

Tony D was exiled by the previous regime. Big part of the reason JD and Jg were fired is that they signed Tony and then exiled him two weeks into the season
Tony obviously has behavioral issues. But these are best handled in the Locke room not by team officials grandstanding in a hyped environment with the pandemic and various political currents temporarily overflowing their bounds
IMO Tony D saga has more episodes left
His son is Connor Murphy on the Blackhawks.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they did but I expect the Devils to expose Will Butcher, Nathan Bastian, and/or Nick Merkley who are cheaper and have an upside.
I actually hope the Devils keep Subban because he is in the final year of his contract and he will work hard to secure another big deal. The Devils could trade him at the deadline if he has a good season plus they are able to eat some of his contract to help facilitate a trade.
Subban was my favorite Hab when he was traded, but I have to say that trade turned out better for MTL than NSH.
THW has the following team projected, which like LVG I feel like could be historically bad, but I like this roster more than I liked LVG.
MTL in the THW mock, traded two 2nd round picks to SEA so they take Byron and then they never mention what happens to Byron. I don't see him on the roster or in the AHL section nor do they mention a buyout.

Aside from a projected trade (and protect?), did his standing fall so precipitously? He showed well in multiple SCP Series, had a couple of strong games vs Bolts, maybe faded in Games 4/5 best as I recall gleaning.
Not special. he's a max effort bottom 6 player, excels in PK and defensive role, but you're right scored some big playoff goals. MTL got him off waivers (from CAL?) but I don't mind losing him, not sure I want to pay 2 2nds to do it though.
If I'm paying two 2nd's it so they take Drouin.

The odds of Seattle taking Komarov are about the same as taking me. That only happens if the Isles give them a pick.
My guess would be that they take Leddy. He can still play and he has an expiring contract that they can move at the trade deadline for picks.
Agree 100% I mean McLeod is no star, but finally he showed promise this year and you don't just give away guys who can skate like that. I bet they do protect Bastian over him though. For some reason unbeknownst to anyone the organization seems to love him.

I believe that is correct. I'm pretty sure they don't want to expose Mayfield given his play this postseason and very reasonable contract.

I'd give Parise a low $$$ deal over players like Blackwell or Di Guisseppe
And if I were EDM I'd rather have Suter than Keith (for the money and the picks)
I would sign either of those guys (Parise or Suter) to low $$$ deals. Solid veteran adds.

I don't think Parise makes much sense for the Rangers. They need tougher players, not more skill.
But Suter does. Suter would be a great add for the Rangers.
I'd add him for his leadership.
He's been a team captain and an alternate captain, he's won a Gold meal at the WJC representing his country and a silver medal in the Olympics representing his country, he led a team to the Stanley Cup finals, he is just a leader IMO.
and his value in the bottom 6 on a young team is incalculable IMO.
In my world it's Parise over the Blackwell or Di Guisseppe or other bottom 6 player.
I think teams will be lining up to add him.
yes, and most suspect that's where he ends up (NYI), but I'm just saying I like him for any team.
I don't think he's getting a ton of money at this stage of his career.
Obviously not the kind of player Perry is/was, but similar in terms of veteran leadership

I think this is a bad move for them.
Im absolutely with you. Love Varly but he is the easiest trade I think that can free up money. I would love to sign Dreidger to be 1b.
The Minnesota Wild
They had $10mm each of salary to be paid the next four years. It was an easy deal for a cheap to eat. I don't get why you couldn't get a team to retain half on both of them. Maybe they tried and the players refused to waive their NMC's?
I have no idea, but cap management, contracts, and trades are areas I usually trust the experts.

Moves like this are made by GMs who think they only have a year or two left and need to compete immediately. The biggest thing that pissed me off about Sather was he behaved the same way despite having a life-time guarantee. He was forced into being smart and long-term after his dreadful first few years, but immediately went into short-term mode once Lundqvist/Jagr were hot post-lockout.
Hearing Parise's name also pisses me off - I think we would have had a Cup or two if we picked him over Jessiman.

Breaking News: Darren Dreger on Insider Trading just said the #GoAvsGo and Gabriel Landeskog are not even close to an extension.
Dreger said the Colorado Avalanche has to change significantly or else Landeskog will go to market.
That was a rough offseason. Losing Parise was extremely disappointing but once I saw the length of the contract I knew that the Devils would seriously regret it with 5-8 years left on the contract.
Rumors are MIN cleared space to make a run at Eichel.
Saw on Twitter that the Islanders are shopping Leddy.

There's a growing sense that the Predators might leave Matt Duchene unprotected in the expansion draft. Has five more years on his deal at an $8M AAV.
@TSNHockey @TheAthletic
I think it's possible, but only if someone overpays them. He's a Vezina candidate who has played well in the playoffs signed reasonably with 2 years remaining (5m AAV). I don't see Lou trading a known quantity for a 2nd, or even a combo of 2nds/3rds. Maybe at the deadline if Sorokin steps up and takes control.
I do think Lou will somehow leverage the expansion draft to cut 3-5m in salary. Leddy is the obvious name who will be exposed but I'm not sure he's a good fit for an expansion team with only 1 year left. More likely I think they attach a draft pick to move out a contract.
Like others I'd be pretty surprised if Parise doesn't end up an Islander. Not sure if addig him and getting Lee/Wahlstrom healthy is enough to get by Tampa but i'm also not sure it's not enough. Especially if Tampa finally deals with their cap situation.
So many injuries, and such perseverance to come back and now go out on his terms.

Jeff Skinner has agreed to waive his NMC for the purpose of being exposed in the Seattle expansion draft, his agent, Don Meehan, told me.
Skinner jumped when they placed a truckload of money in front of him. He was never a leader when in Carolina. Obviously Buffalo thought he would be able to help lead a pretty garbage Sabres team. They couldn't have been more wrong.
He always had talent and I can't help but wonder if he is put in a new situation where he can just be a regular second line player that he won't start producing again. The contract is an albatross but if they are willing to take the chance and it works out.....Hey who knows. 50-60 points a year at 9 million a year may be overpaying for him but those points will help the Kracken team out.
As for the expansion draft. There are some pretty good goalies that are going to be available. Seattle should be able to solidify their net for at least the next few years. That is a great start.
On the Canes front. I really hope they make a run at Driedger (UFA) from the Panthers to help in the net. They have 20 million to spend and if they don't get stupid and sign Hamilton for 8 million a year long term deal which he is apparently wanting. They will have enough money to sign some good players to fill those few holes that they have that should help them get better and become a cup contender. Again starting with Driedger.
And then go with Knight and re-signed Driedger
And then go with Knight and re-signed Driedger
I am sure that the Panthers GM would love to dump that contract. I think it was signed before he got the job. Bobrovsky has a Carey Price type of albatross contract. Five more years at 10 million a year. Anyone in Seattle who grabs that needs their head checked. Then fired. Only an idiot like Marc Bergevin would think that it is a great deal.
I am sure that Ron Francis will not pull a Bergevin. Especially since the goalies that are going to be available are solid.
You'll know if a Leddy trade is coming down the pike if you see Greene signed. They need to have a D to expose in the expansion draft and they won't if they trade Leddy and don't sign/acquire anyone else.

The only reason that he was a finalist is that the Habs were on a run. They did finish 18th overall and would not have made the playoffs in a normal season. Even the French press here were naming his replacements as late as after they beat the Leafs in the first round. If you knew how things work in this province. You know that when the French press has it out for you. Better start planning to put your house up for sale.
I wish he would bang my ex-wife. Maybe she would lighten up about always wanting more child support every month.
Outside of hockey. He is a turd of person. My girlfriend (who is the exact opposite of me. A real see the positive in everyone and thinks that everyone is a good person) works at one of the hospitals here.
She deals with all of the Habs. She says they are all great. Very nice, polite and accommodating to the staff and the people that they see. Not Bergevin. He is arrogant. Talks down to everyone and he acts like his shit don't stink.
Always bitching at all the staff about every single thing and refuses to acknowledge anyone (unless he is complaining to them) or answer questions from anyone except the Habs doctor.

And I agree it's somewhat inconsistent, but GM of the year is the only award that gets voted on during the playoffs (after the second round) but I agree with it because who gives a shit about the GM when the team wins Presidents Cup but loses 1st round (especially if healthy).
I think teams underestimated the fact the North had a lot of parity, not that is sucked, and maybe not juggernauts other than the mentally weak Maple Leafs, but all solid teams. They had the "best worst team" in any division.
hockey should be about the playoffs.
and the ifs and buts mean nothing to me. If JPP doesn't block a FG in Dallas the Giants likely miss the playoffs, instead they won a SB. if DeSean Jackson doesn't miraculously return a punt for a TD ending a miraculous comeback the GB Packers would have been eliminated from the playoffs. Instead? Super Bowl champs. A lot of stuff happens in sports where you can say but....it doesn't matter.

I can agree with that. Just get in.
I am too sure that the two teams that ended up 16th and 17th overall (Rangers and Stars) who finished ahead of the Habs would agree because of "special circumstances" not giving them a chance to play because they were placed in stronger divisions.
Anyway. It is done with. The right team of the two won. I am excited to see who Seattle takes and who the Canes get to fill those holes.
Unbridled, irrational and seething hatred.
It's completely rational! Won't disputed the unbridled and seething part, though.
that's a great deal.

it sounds like they may trade Leddy ahead of the expansion draft to clear cap and make sure they don't lose him for nothing (per Staple), and though a Leddy to Chara swap would certainly decrease their speed, for 1 year I think he'd be a nice addition (assuming he's willing to take a smallish 1 year deal to play for a contender).
You'll know if a Leddy trade is coming down the pike if you see Greene signed. They need to have a D to expose in the expansion draft and they won't if they trade Leddy and don't sign/acquire anyone else.
I think that's wrong - assuming they go 7-3-1 the 3 D they are going to protect are almost definitely Pulock, Pelech (RFA), and Mayfield. Which is why Leddy is the odd man out in the first place.

But there is a requirement that at least one defenseman who meets certain NHL game played requirements is exposed. The only other defenseman on the roster meeting that is Dobson, and he is ineligible to be taken. Greene and Coburn are free agents, and Hockey hasn’t played enough the past two years.
Quote: won’t agree with me, but I think there’s a real chance Isles trade Varlamov this off-season. Carrying both Varlamov and Sorokin is a huge cap hit to spend on goalies. They could get an asset back for Varlamov (and then use that asset to dump Ladd) and we’d have to trust Korn/Trotz to add a cheaper goalie to pair with Sorokin. //////
I know it's pissing where I eat, but assuming NYR did qualify for SCP, notwithstanding the strong Division and hence poorer regular season record, vs. e.g., North, I cannot conceive of an opponent NYR would be competitive against, except, perhaps, Habs, and that's not to denigrate them, but that would imo have been their only salvageable matchup. And Rangers would have been long gone before the finals.
7F - Barzal, Lee, Bailey, Eberle, JGP, Nelson, Beau
3D - Pulock, Pelech, Mayfield
1G - Varlamov
after the playoffs I dont think any of the choices are all that questionable. Those are the obvious 11 to protect. Mayfield's contract is too big of a steal to not protect.
That leaves Leddy as the only true regular exposed, though with only 1 year left I'm not sure Seattle picks him. I think Koivula and Bellows are the 2 most likely losses. Though I think the most likely outcome is Lou gives Seattle a draft pick to take Ladd off their hands.

If his injuries are in fact career threatening the Predators best play might just be acquiring Weber in a trade and keeping him on LTIR the next 5 years - like was done with Chris Pronger.
I don't understand how all this works and I hope Weber's career isn't over, but it is a unique situation to monitor.

Sources say the Maple Leafs have granted Zach Hyman’s agent, Todd Reynolds permission to speak with other NHL clubs to investigate trading his rights.
I don't know what happened in Florida, but Yandle produced ~0.5 PPG last year. He's still a pretty solid player.
they only have 16 skaters under contract.
if they add a market rate starting G the cap room they have is going to dry up quick.
no first round pick.
and as we all know almost half of their cap is tied up in Matthews, Marner, and Tavares (who has a full NMC).
If they want to do anything it would seem almost certain Nylander would have to go. But is there a big enough move they can make with him as a headliner?
I know this is off the wall bonkers but I think there'd be some logic in a Tavares back to the NYI deal for both sides and I'd guess it'd be one of the few teams Tavares would ok - but obviously the odds of something like that happening are probably less than .0000001%.
I believe they will gain $6M (and have $10.4M in space) once Boychuk is approved by the league for LTIR.
I don't know the approval process or how long it takes but teams have to apply for LTIR relief.
just browsing capfriendly it looks like right now Boychuk's 6m salary is currently counted in their 77m payroll total - so I think you are right. When the window opens to move Boychuk to LTIR they will gain 6m, so if those numbers are all right they currently have closer to 9 or 10m in free space (including Green's bonus).

I think we are talking past each other a little bit.
I agree that the list Staple posted is the list the Isles would protect with no changes. But that assumes Leddy is still on the team and unprotected. The rule on who is exposed includes the following:
"One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played in at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons."
If they protect Pelech, Pulock and Mayfield (which they will) but Leddy is traded, someone needs to be on the roster who meets that criteria. Without Leddy, they would not meet that requirement.

Hearing Taylor Hall return to #NHLBruins is moving in that direction.
Pelech: $5.5M AAV
Beauvilier: $4.5M AAV
Sorokin: $2.8M AAV
That leaves $8.6 in cap space. That will likely to to Cizikas ($2M AAV) and a replacement for Leddy (figure $3M AAV). Now you have between $3M and $4M which is not much space to re-sign a guy like Palmieri.
I wonder if he gets moved again.
I wonder if he gets moved again.
I think LL will entice Francis to take a forward. I also expect some type of fuckery to exile Ladd's cap hit.
K
I’m not itching to give up Leddy (or Varlamov) but the team has to be cap complaint. If you keep Leddy then you probably have to trade draft picks to unload Ladd and you also lose Eberle and Cizikas and don’t have the cap space (or the draft picks) to really replace them.
It’s a hard spot.
This i agree with completely. I expect they will overpay on term and he'll take less aav. If someone throws 3.5 us you say good luck.
The cliff is rapidly approaching for all of them unfortunately. I wish they could be bubble wrapped and unleashed in the post season.
The will only move Leddy if they acquire a defenseman back, or feel there are enough in free agency at a lesser price that they can live with. I think trading him is a last resort because they expect they may lose him for no compensation in the expansion draft.
Charlie Leddy.
His uncle Brian and I played in High School together - Brian was a line mate of Martin St. Louis at UVM.
His father Scott is a few years older than me, but good dude, known the family my whole life. I'm pulling for this kid. On the US U17 team for now, BC commit for 2022.

If they protect Pelech, Pulock and Mayfield (which they will) but Leddy is traded, someone needs to be on the roster who meets that criteria. Without Leddy, they would not meet that requirement.
But at this point there's no reason to assume Leddy isn't on the team. Unless someone just blows them away with a first round pick or something (which seems highly unlikely).
It's also why I suspect the NYI will try to just bribe SEA into taking some salary off their hands with a draft pick (Komarov or Ladd). If that happens there's no issue with protection rules, no reason to fear losing Leddy, and post-draft were so inclined they could trade Leddy to bring back a pick. Komarov only has 1 year @ 3m left so that would be a pretty easy contract to absorb and a pretty cheap way to add a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Possibly even adding the pick along with 1 of the players they may have selected any way (like Koivula or Bellows).
I don't know if I'd call it below market but it's certainly fair market. When you are pushing for a cup and up against cap tough decisions have to be made (like Toews last year) and this is one that could go either way. The rule Mike pointed out makes me think it's very unlikely he gets dealt before the expansion draft though.
So you must view that Carlo deal as very team friendly, no?
Sure, he doesn't skate like Leddy, but he's a beast in his own zone and he's much younger.
Bruins hopefully get crushed on the McAvoy contract.
Quote:

Very team friendly, I'm hoping it keeps Pelech's # down.
Apples and oranges with Leddy. The market for defensive guys and Puck movers is very different. 40 point guys get a lot more $$.
McAvoy is a 40-pt player, plays the hard minutes, and is defensively solid.
I loved him in juniors and knew somehow he'd wind up a Bruin.
At least he's a Giants fan.

Does anyone like playing under Torts? He reminds me a lot of Parcells. Fun to hear in press conferences and delivers shorter term but always wears out his welcome. Major difference is players liked Parcells.
You have to think they'll protect him now. We hy sign a guy to a 2 year deal then expose him? Good I like what I saw out if him this past season. He can be a part of the future when we get good hopefully.

Interesting deal. Trying to getvaxread on him from Avs fans on Twitter and its bizarre. Half live him, half think he's a bum. They were probably gonna lose him to the Kracken. I like it from the Devs standpoint as it's a definite upgrade on our 2nd d pairing. I like Maktsev but we have a ton of young fwds with upside. The 2nd rounder is the Isles 2nd.

There is a 100% chance that the Kraken would have taken him. He likely would be their top pairing LD so the Avs wisely got something for him rather than lose him for nothing.
I think that it's obvious that Butcher will be exposed and is more than likely going to be selected by Seattle.

That would be great at the right price/term.
I also wouldn't mind adding more veteran experience to the locker room. Zach Parise on a 1 year $1.5-2 million dollar deal would add much needed leadership. Also If the Devils lose Butcher in the expansion draft and Ryan Murray walks as expected then I wouldn't mind bringing in Ryan Suter on a 1-2 year deal. Draft Luke Hughes at 4 and let him develop for a year or two at Michigan. Suter could be the stopgap until Hughes is ready.

Things can change with a phone call, but sources say there really hasn’t been any movement lately in the Landeskog negotiations.
Give Seattle a future first to take Ladd (and maybe another pick to take Komarov too).
Then trade 1 of Leddy or Eberle for whatever.
I would think that 10m+ saved gets them close to being able to fit him in without having to move Varlamov.

Komarov has only 1 year left and he could play 4C if Koivula isn't ready and you let Cizikas go. Ladd and Eberle are the contracts they really need to get out from under.
but they only have half their roster filled, and legitimate contributors unsigned (Makar for example - who is an RFA but still) and no goalies under contracts except Francouz who is mediocre and only under contract for next year.
Plus MacKinnon is a UFA after next year (2023) - that's a long way away but not that long when you imagine what hose numbers will look like.
so one can dream....
My guess is they are probably trying to move Hickey out for his $2.5M much more strenuously than trying to move Komarov.
I think there is a very good chance Seattle takes Leddy (without a side deal) so moving Eberle as well could put them in a better spot to re-sign the RFAs and add a piece as needed.
Makar is going to get a big deal.
Got to think those 2 could eat up close to half of their current space and then they still have ~10 roster spots to fill.
resigning Landeskog for more than 7m would make things real tight. And that's before the obvious massive extension with Mackinnon which is likely to be due pretty soon.

Agree, that's what I said above.
Makar is an RFA though, they do not have to give him a big deal and if someone submits an offer sheet they'd have to match it. They may give him a big deal, but also have the option of a bridge deal.

but if he hits FA I think Lamoriello would move a lot of pieces around to try to accommodate adding Landeskog. Can't think of too many players who would potentially fit better next to Barzal and Andy Strickland had the NYI on the list of teams he'd be interested in.

I'm pretty confident they will ship out Komarov to someone with a 2nd and 3rd (could be seattle, unless they really want to add Leddy or Bellows). If someone overpays Czikas i think they bring back Zajac for probably half of what Komarov makes.
Ladd I'm not as sure about but there's also always a chance they find a way to LTIR him. Even without shenanigans if he's proven anything it's that his next injury is never too far away. And I'm not sure how much motivation he will have to play in the AHL since most of his deal has already been paid out via signing bonus.

if Gru gets 5-7m and Makar takes a bridge deal (which I suspect wouldn't be too far off that) that's half their space so it's tough even with the bridge. If they intend to a big extension for Makar then it seems very difficult to get Landeskog back.

no question - hence the "his next injury is never far off". I'm not sure Lou will be enthusiastic about giving up a first to dump a contract that there's likely a decent probability gets buried on LTIR at some point over the next 2 years.
let's say resigning Beau + Pelech = 10m.
now let's make a few bigger assumptions.
let's say they attach a pick to dump Komarov. +3m.
lose Leddy either via expansion draft or trade. +5.5m.
They'd have 17 roster spots signed and $9m in cap room. Or 18 if they decide to replace Leddy with Hickey (and 8m in room).
So it would be tight but possible to add someone like Landeskog. But if they did get him they'd likely need to create additional room to resign Sorokin and fill out the roster (Greene, Zeke, Zajac, whoever) by trading Eberle. Or by biting the bullet and giving up a first to get rid of Ladd.

lol, I really have no idea at this point on almost anyone.
Parise to NYI seems to be a favorite rumor
Seth Jones to the Flyers had steam for a while
Eichel to NYR was discussed, but also ARI
Tarasenko has a list of contenders apparently
I think Danault stays in MTL - he showed his value in the playoffs for the most part shutting down the Matthews line and the Stone line - as well as limiting Brayden Point (Point had two even strength points in 5 games) but who knows he may have priced himself off the Habs.
But Shea Weber changes everything in MTL.
Also, and more importantly for much of this projected movement I think the expansion draft is an important variable so we won't know much about FA movement until we see who is taken (creating holes) and creating cap room potentially.
Expansion draft lists are due tomorrow by 5pm so not sure we see many more trades, but if we do they'll be in the next 24 hours. Sunday the lists are made public.
I'd really like the NHL to do away with protection lists altogether. Or significantly limit them to guys with NMC and perhaps 2 or 3 more core pieces.

No protection list? Being able to take a Connor McDavid from another team would be awful for the sport and the fans.

Perhaps I could have articulated my point better. I think a team should only able to protect 5-6 players max. If you have 6 players with NMC, then you cannot protect anyone else. Using the NYR as an example, we have Panarin, Kreider, Zibby and Trouba on NMC. In such a situation, they would be able to protect 2 more players or make arrangements with the expansion to not select a player by forking over draft picks. Perhaps make it 6 + 1 goalie.
The entire point is to establish a new franchise and it's in the NHL's best interest to ensure that new team can be reasonably competitive quickly. Parity is key.
Currently, every NHL team is allowed to protect 11 players, not including those with NMC. Practically their entire roster leaving the new team forced to select JAG 4th liners and albatross contracts.
I also think an expansion team should automatically select first overall and picks #2 on down are a lottery. There's no way Buffalo is more deserving of the top pick than a team that doesn't yet have a single player under contract.
It seems almost you are combining protecting and exposing rules.
Greg Wyshynski and Emily Kaplan on EPSN do a great job explaining it (and I'm not saying it's right or wrong).
It's not you can protect n players "in addition to your NMC players" - the players with a NMC HAVE to be protected and count against your total so having a roster full of players with NMC (like MTL) hurts you. Players with a NTC can be exposed.
There are minimum requirements for players exposed in the expansion draft. There must be at least two forwards and one defenseman exposed who are under contract for the 2021-22 season who played at least 40 games last season or 70 games over the last two seasons; and one goalie exposed who is under contract for the 2021-22 season or will be a restricted free agent this offseason -- as long as that pending RFA goalie has received his qualifying offer this summer.
One important thing to remember for these requirements: Players who have "potential career-ending injuries" that have missed more than 60 straight games -- or have a confirmed career-threatening injury -- can't be used to satisfy a team's player exposure requirement unless the NHL signs off on it.
Kaplan: If a player has a no-trade clause, he can be exposed. If a player has a no-movement clause, he must be protected -- unless he agrees to waive it for the purpose of being exposed. There's already an example of at least one player doing this: Calgary Flames veteran forward Milan Lucic.
The 32-year-old, who has two years remaining on his seven-year contract, said he loves it in Calgary and wants to stay with the Flames, but agreed to waive his no-movement clause so that the team can prioritize protecting other players....

I am not sure that cutting down to 7 is any better because that basically means they can form a team of 4 2nd lines and 3 2nd D pairings. That is too overpowered.
Using the draft simulator at Capfriendly (with some modifications), there are some interesting younger players who might have some potential with added playing time that teams are going to have to make available.
Perhaps once all of the lists are in we can have everyone post their Kraken Mock Draft using the same rules of 20 contracts. I know my biggest issue is I am NEVER near the salary floor Seattle has to have if I take my top player from each time trying to meet the other rules. There are a number of interesting inexpensive goalies in particular that will make it possible for Seattle to absorb some bad contracts at forward.
At goalie, for example, St. Louis has to expose Ville Husso because otherwise they are losing Binnington. Husso only has a $750,000 cap hit and is a UFA after 2022 so he counts as someone under contract for next year. Washington has to expose either impending RFA Ilya Samsonov or RFA after 2022 Vitek Vanecek. Each of whom are currently making under $1,000,000 per year. Samsonov will get a raise, but I doubt it will be a dealbeaker. Washington is one team that I could see having to give a lot to Seattle to get them to take one of their D (Orlov, Kempney, or Jensen) or take on Oshie's contract
The Islanders will likely expose both Jordan Eberle and Nick Leddy, who are productive veterans each with contracts around $5.5M AAV. Eberle is a top six player and reliable 20 goal scorer (31 years old), and Leddy puts up 40 points a year from the blueline (30 years old). Both could be useful pieces on an expansion team looking to be competitive.
I don't think expansion happens often enough for me to have a good opinion on how it should work.
I don't hate expansion like some curmudgeonly purists, but I also don't have any great ideas how I would change it.
I think the quick success of LVG should maybe give some evidence that it worked. and it's not like LVG was one and done, they're still good.

Full trade:
#Isles send Nick Leddy to DET for a 2021 2nd (52nd overall) and F Richard Panik. DET retains half of Panik's $2.75-million salary. Panik has two years left on his deal.
Depends on the other options available to them.
Eberle would be a good fit IMO on an expansion team- solid veteran, helps get them to the cap floor.
@StapeAthletic

With about 20 hours to go until expansion protected lists are due, the #Isles currently have no eligible defensemen to leave unprotected -- each team must have at least one signed D who played 27 NHL games last season on the unprotected list.
So there's another move coming.
Would be really excited if all of this was being done with the idea that Landeskog is a viable get.
If we add a 3rd to DETs second we might be able to get them to take Ladd. Would surely be enough for Hickey or Komorov.

You were all over that rule. Great job I hadn't read that quirk anywhere else.
I'm a little surprised they were this aggressive to move Leddy, though the value seems fine. Does forebode that Lou has something planned that requires a healthy amount of cap.
If you have time, use it. I’d guess a deal is in place with one of them that they can file at 4:59pm today to complete their list for Seattle if nothing else changes.
Agree, that return is pretty good considering they were likely going to lose him next week for no compensation. I see the deal from Detroit’s side as well. They get an experienced d-man who they can eat minutes and Be effective on the power play. Leddy’s contract is also expiring this year so he can bring something back at the trade deadline as well.
Detroit thinks he can get them more at trade deadline than the 2nd/Panik they traded. He also gives a veteran leader in D corps.
Leddy is a loss but the Islanders have breathing room on the cap now.
Quote:
I think the Islanders did well in the Leddy trade. I don't know why DET did that trade.
Detroit thinks he can get them more at trade deadline than the 2nd/Panik they traded. He also gives a veteran leader in D corps.
That's fair, the other thing I was thinking is picks in next year's draft might be better than this year because we will have a real scouting year. So even if they still just get a second it might be better for them.
Leddy is a loss but the Islanders have breathing room on the cap now.
I think they retained salary because they could and the $1M or so got them a better player in return. Panik (if he would ever accept coaching) fits Islanders better than he does Detroit and he was blocking some younger players. I think other teams wanted one of the younger guys like Hirose or were not offering someone like Leddy.
My guess is they look at Leddy getting them back at least the draft pick they gave up at the deadline.
Trade/signing freeze is at 3pm EST today, so should see something by then from the Islanders.
Coburn or Greene would be eligible if they sign a 1 year vet minimum deal. I could also see a team with excess eligible D like Boston or especially Los Angeles being interested in a forward (or in Los Angeles’s case Varlamov with how their goalies played)

Holy shit. Probably my favorite dman in the league. Makar is gonna get PAID
Someone should offer-sheet Makar.
Every year for the last 20 years writers seeking clicks write the evergreen "could player x be in danger of an offer sheet" and it never happens. The Aho sheet was a favor to Carolina, other than that gms don't piss off the fraternity.
Tactically I agree with you. If ever there was a situation (flat cap) and a worthy player Makar is it.
I read an article about the Rangers offer sheeting Sakic in '97. The picks they were going to give up were Malhotra, Lundmark, Blackburn, a pick used to move up and get Brendl, and a pick to acquire Bure.
A team like the Wild would be picking in the 20s with Makar for the next few years.
Also, if you're a western GM offering $10-12 you can really screw COL. Big benefit.

Oh, he's an UFA? Shit. Well, it's only a 7th rounder.
They have a window where they can negotiate with Goodrow before free agency. They need players like Goodrow and I would think Drury is confident he can work out a deal with him before free agency starts.
I think they plan to sign him is all I can imagine. TBL couldn't and 7th round picks in the NHL are like NFL UDFA's - so not a bad gamble to get exclusive negotiating rights to Goodrow for 11 days.
but I have to believe he hits FA unless the NYR overwhelm him and I like him, he's one of those grit guys the Rangers were absolutely missing, but not sure he's someone I overwhelm.

Barclay Goodrow expected to be pursued aggressively by Boston
Jimmy Murphy of Boston Hockey NOW: The Boston Bruins expect to go after Barclay Goodrow once free agency starts on July 28th. This has a history given that Boston was one of the teams in on Goodrow before the 2020 trade deadline. Ultimately, the San Jose Sharks forward was dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Don Sweeney saw the impact of Goodrow and a source all but confirmed Boston’s intentions.
“I would expect them to go hard after Goodrow again,” an NHL source, that has direct knowledge of the Goodrow trade discussions leading into the 2020 NHL Trade Deadline, told Boston Hockey Now over the weekend. “They knew then that Goodrow is the type of player you need in your middle six to make a real Cup run and he’s obviously proven that since he got to Tampa.”
The expected salary range for Goodrow could be $4-4.5 million and there is no way Tampa Bay can afford that. That goes likely for Blake Coleman as well.

lol, no, not even close, 7th round picks in the NHL are less valuable the old 12th round NFL picks.
I'd gamble a 7th for the rights to sign Goodrow and if it doesn't work out it just means the money wasn't right, but well worth the risk.
And NFL 3rd would be like trading a late 1st/early 2nd for that same chance and then no, I would not be happy if I were a NYR fan.

Hearing that Carey Price has waived his no-move for purpose of exposure in the expansion draft so that the Habs could protect Jake Allen in the expansion draft. The thought is that Seattle wouldn’t want to pick up the rest of Price’s hefty contract. But I guess we will see.
No, the player has right to waive on a transaction by transaction basis. Price agreed to waive for this instance but the clause remains in his contract.
I just saw the news on Price but posted it in the wrong thread. I guess the Habs are hoping Francis looks at Price like Scott in Montreal does - not good enough for that kind of coin.
If I were Francis, I think I would love to build my franchise around someone like Price.
they get incredibly younger and basically a ton of cap space for the foreseeable future.
granted their goalie is Jake Allen and they wouldn't have a captain, but both Weber and Price are the wrong side of 30.
I think with them (healthy) the Habs are better in 2022, but who knows if that will be the case. Especially with Weber.
the next week just got a lot more interesting because I agree, Carey Price as your franchise goalie on an expansion team is different than Carey Price as the Canadiens goalie and could make a lot of sense for the Kraken.
Plus, he's from Vancouver or somewhere in BC, so I wonder if he didn't just waive the NMC so the Habs can protect Allen, I wonder if he did it so he could possibly be selected by SEA.
If Francis is smart he wouldn't simply select Price he'd get some picks or players to do it. Like rights to Danault.
Quote:

thanks, I did not know this. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Weber, what a strange development in these injuries/retirement questions. When he had poor games vs Bolts (and I mentioned this at times) it seemed to me less physical and more mental, as in flubbing connections with his partner behind Price's net and stray outlets. But it's entirely possible, when you are not physically 100% and part of your mind is honed in on pain and joints not functioning the way you want, that part of your mind is there and not concentrating on play.
I think it's ok if that goalie is Price from four years ago, so like 25 - 30 years old Price I think it's fine.
but from 33 - 38 those contracts like you say can be killers.
For that reason I doubt Francis take him, unless he figures it helps him close to the cap, and even not as at his best Price is still at worst solid, and a such a good character person.
but there are so many goalie options and almost all make better financial sense and not a huge talent drop.
I always feel 1a/1b ride the hot hand is the way to go. Easier said than done.

If Seattle takes Price, and then grabs the best combination of good/cheap to back him up that can be a solid strategy. Have Price play 50 games or so to stay fresh for the playoffs and put him in the best position to carry them.

Outside of Skinner, none are realistically targets of Seattle unless their team antes up for Seattle to take one. However, they know that they are helping their current team by waiving NMC. In Skinner’s case he really does need a change of scenery.
but is coming to the end.
I think the Bruins lose Krejci this year at the expense of the younger Hall and maybe trade deBrusk.
but big thing is their goalie is Swayman, and he's their only goalie under contract.
I like him (I mean I hate him because he's a Bruin, but I like him as a goalie), but he's 22 and not really well tested they will add a veteran goalie.

Same thing it does with Goodrow. If Seattle picks them, they'll have a small window where they can exclusively negotiate with them.

And then there's this:

Ryan Strome (protected by #NYR) drawing decent amount of trade interest. Ottawa among those teams. #goSENSgo

But to replace Eberle or Bailey as UFA you will use much of that cap room. Clutterbuck is insanely overpaid for his role. The Islanders are limited not from Bailey or Eberle, but having $8.5M committed to their 4th line.

I don't want to lose either of them, but I get the thinking of exposing expensive declining guys with term.
Re: the 4th line I bitched about all their contracts at the time, said they wouldn't physically hold up. I was wrong. The Islanders success the last 3 years has been in large part to their bottom 6 consistently winning shifts against top lines. They make a huge impact in 7 game series, few team have that physicality and it affects defenseman noticeably. The cliff is coming though.

Our success is because of our third line consistently playing in the offensive zone and getting pucks on net, not our fourth line. Our fourth line has lost us more than they have won with their complete inability to sustain offensive pressure or get shots on net. This is exacerbated when Komarov and Zajac completely suck the life out of whatever line they play on. You can't win against the heavily padded Vasilievsky if you are getting 20 shots per game or less.

Most-obvious choices for Seattle, IMO:
Giordano (CGY)
Domi (CBJ)
Stecher (DET)
Driedger (FLA)
Jarnkrok (NSH)
Bailey (NYI)

yep, not sure why I don't remember vegas that well, it was just a few years ago, but it seems like a lot of better options for SEA. Maybe the flat cap, maybe teams looking to unload high $$ contracts or feel like SEA won't take them b/c of the high dollars, but SEA *can* have a good team.
The best players on LVG were D that got traded to them like Shea Theodore and their goalie Marc Andre Fleury.
I think that's allowed, technically SEA would have to then select Tarasenko and trade him so it couldn't officially happen until Wednesday, but those are the types of deals I expect to be made between now and then.
LVG did a lot of that.
Yes, as long as Seattle is one half of the trade it is OK. Your scenario would have to wait until the expansion draft when he is Kraken property. I'm sure Francis is talking to everybody.
I want no part of Tarasenko
silky smooth.
but with three shoulder surgeries I'd need to be really sure.

It depends what the injury was/is.
Tarasenko has expressed dissatisfaction with the way the Blues and their medical staff handled the injury and his rehab, so like I said - if the medicals check out.
If you're SEA though the risk is much less. it's just $$$. Anyone else you'd need to pony up assets.

Ditto Landeskog. I'd be truly shocked if he left Colorado. A guy with unassailable character is gonna bail the most exciting team in the league? The coin flip (with Boston) best line in the league? In a community where he's built 10 year relationships and started a family? No way, this is posturing.

That’s why I could not understand the selection after they had signed Bob to that contract. Even if Knight was as great as he was hyped to be, you have him behind a contract you can’t move because most teams pay less for their entire goalie tandem than the Panthers are paying Bob.

Other way around. They drafted Knight before signing Bob.
But basically same thing I wondered. You don't take a goalie at #13 in the draft and then sign a veteran (30 years old) for 7 years 10M per year a week after.
It's basically punting the pick or creating a worse situation where you have a $10M per year player on the bench.
Fire-able IMO. And Tallon was fired, but not for this.

Not sure, I'm bad at this, but if Eichel were healthy no, he'd get more, but I'd pay at least similar for the simple fact no injury concerns with Tkachuk.
He is healthy and he's a physical beast who can put the puck in the net. He plays edgy and backs up his play, but plays hard edgy, not Tom Wilson edgy (maybe some people think it's Tom Wilson edgy - I hate when the Habs play the Flames - he's such an agitator).
23 years old, already a star IMO.
Only negative is he's a LW, not a C so not sure how/if that tips the compensation toward Eichel.

With Landeskog, Danault, etc., if they don't draft the player then they have to compete with every other team after FA starts as opposed to having the earlier negotiation window. That being said, they can plant the seeds of what they are willing to offer during the pre-Expansion Draft period.
I could be mistaken.

I see, yeah that's what I assumed, the way the other post was written I thought it was saying they could do both before others teams could negotiate - which would be stupid by the player I guess since hitting FA helps them.

As speculation re Eichel mounts, can tell you that Rangers have still not received access to his medical records from Sabres. So, there is nothing close at this point.
Interesting to see what happens throughout the league once the freeze lifts at 1pm today. Seattle pick Tyler Pitlick is rumored to be someone that's going to be on the move, with Carolina and Philly both interested. Also, Edmonton has both 7 and 8 year deals confirmed with Zach Hyman of Toronto, for a sign and trade that could be completed this afternoon. 8 years at around $5M, would imagine 7 and closer to $5.5M.

I can't believe someone is willing to pay Hyman that much money. He has an injury history, is already 29, and has never been a point getter despite being on lines with elite players. If Barclay Goodrow was playing with Tavares, Marner, Matthews, etc. in that scheme he would be putting up comparable numbers and Rangers are paying him less term and less per year.
A lot of people wrote that teams learned from the Vegas draft and handled it better. I don't know about that, I look at the rosters and see them as similar.
I think Gallant deserves more credit for Vegas than he gets.
Some minor decisions (I'd have selected Bailey over Eberle), but there are a few I think I would have swung for the fences on, like Tarasenko, maybe even Price. I'd have picked Domi for sure.
I do agree teams handled it better. There was no Florida disaster.

but you could also make the argument McPhee handled it better than Francis.
I can almost guarantee you the Kraken aren't going to the playoffs, let alone SCF.
though I also thought Vegas would be historically bad.
So, I'll wait to see the rest of the roster, but the Kraken have a 37-year old defenseman a couple fringy players who I like like Dunn and Gourde (injured) a bunch of AHL players/bottom of the roster guys.
rest of the roster (FA/trades could change my mind), but now that team is awful and I don't think it had to be.
Probably best thing for him to sit out the draft, 19 teams or something removed him from their draft board.
Who knows what his future holds, but at some point you'd hope he's truly remorseful and does get a second chance if he is, his PR written message, if genuine seems like a mature step (or self serving and he probably doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt but have to start somewhere)

Some of the moves were puzzling. Why take who they did from Philly or Columbus unless a deal was in place? If you were taking an RFA from San Jose why True over Donato? I would have taken Kahkonen over Soucy with how the rest of their draft ended up. Too many D IMHO. Especially since they had signed Larsson and Oleksiak and the draft pool was strong on D I may have stuck with 9 D maybe 10 if you did not have trades worked out.
an RFA over Troy Stecher?
Just a lot of puzzling decisions that led me to believe either they had a lot of side deals (which we have not yet learned about) or Francis was maximizing cap space to take bad contracts and or sign free agents..
So while I have been critical, I'm withholding final judgment (and I acknowledge I could not have been more wrong about Vegas so who cares about my judgment) until I see the "final" roster.

I can understand a RFA over Stecher, but why that RFA versus someone like Svechnikov or Hirose (who both had lower contracts last year than Cholowski)?
It seems like they wanted to build from the blue line out which is also a sound strategy and Larsson and Oleksiak are 2 solid prime aged D. Dunn is 24 and the type of breakout player Vegas did well with. Giordano is interesting but I'd guess he will either be traded now or at the deadline and probably bring them back a first round pick+. If traded now I'd expect them to make a big run at Hamilton with that saved money - which would give them a real strong top 4 and bring back some assets. They also picked enough interesting depth guys that they could make some other trades. If they do select Owen Power and he lives up to his draft status they will be set up on the blue line nicely.
Up front is where imo they were a little too grinder focused. Not very many upside players. From a NYI sense I'm happier they took Eberle than Bailey or Bellows and while he's a good winger I'd have almost definitely taken Bellows and used the saved $ to add someone with a higher ceiling (Tarasenko, Domi, Jaden Schwartz in FA, whoever). Gourde is a great add like Reilly Smith was for Vegas. Just don't see very many Tuch/Karlsson upside type picks. Landeskog would obviously be a huge add I expect they will offer him a ton of $ just like Hamilton and probably land 1 of them.
all that said they f'd up by not finding a way to get Gallant locked in. That was the no brainer of all no brainers.

I only compare Cholowski to Stecher b/c they're D.
Stecher won't make much more than Cholowski and is a legit NHL D. Cholowski is an AHL player.

It's pretty much consensus Owen Power is going #1 to Buffalo
I think they'll take the best fwd on the board. They need young top 6 type offensive ability in the pipeline.

Marc Bergevin says Shea Weber has several injuries (ankle, foot, knee, thumb). "Even missing a practice for him wasn't an option. He has a lot of mileage...He won't be back next season, and probably won't be back for his career."
Because MTL can just keep Weber on LTIR the rest of his deal, but if Weber decides to retire, man NSH is so screwed.
NSH should be willing to pay pay MTL so they can make sure Weber doesn't retire and they (NSH) can keep him on LTIR.
But..I admit I don't know how this all works other than if Weber retires NSH has a huge recapture penalty, something like 5M per year for the next 5 years because of how they front-loaded his contract.

Ha! Right after I get him a Zeke jersey
It depends, if I'm MTL the risk of Weber coming back and losing the LTIR is real, and NSH is more at risk, so for them to protect their investment it makes sense.
Not just out of malice.

I think you misread the post. Shea Weber is not the type of player to up and retire and screw over a team by doing so.
I thought DYB was suggesting MTL would screw NSH out of malice.
Weber isn't going to try and screw anyone, but NSH is the one who bears almost all the risk here but MTL still does have some exposure - it would benefit both to shift control to NSH.
Weber though also seems to me like the kind of guy who isn't going to want to stay on LTIR if he can play - and i haven't heard him comment on this at all to say what he's thinking - even at his age I could say him having multiple surgeries and rehabbing them to come back.
but who knows.

Have been told that Lou is looking to bring both Parise and Suter to the Island.
As I said earlier, I would be furious if I were a Kraken fan with some of the players they selected if there were no side deals/deals in advance to select particular players. Nobody can tell me that the players they selected from San Jose, Detroit, Philly, Columbus, etc. were the BPA from their respective franchises while still remaining on or close to budget.
Initial review is terrible, but like I said above I'll wait and see the final roster before I have more of an opinion.

Yeah 6.5 isn't gonna get it done. He's the best dman on the open market. Though all of these guys want they're cake and eat it too. They want to get paid and contend for a cup immediately. In a flat cap year the contenders just can't clear 8-9 mill. Honestly if he wants to contend for a cup and get paid, his best bet is to take 7 mill and stay in Carolina. A team like the Devs can got to 8 or 9 but he's not contending for the cup there next year. Maybe Montreal now the Weber may be done?

No clue, I'm just reading the tea leaves and it reeks of Buffalo trying to pump up ANH and LAK as competition when there's literally no rationale for them to acquire him. Philly obviously blew their load so they're out.

Language involving some of the draft picks included in the Reinhart trade to Florida is what gummed things up. Expected to be wrapped up soon.
Does BUF really deal two Cs this off-season?
Quote:
As we wait on full trade details, Sam Reinhart's been informed he's now a member of the Florida Panthers.
Sweet Jesus, the off-season is hitting the Rangers like the 100 year flood. I like Reinhart a lot, pesky two-way C who has knack around the net, and he would have made 100% sense for NYR, far more than Eichel, because team would keep Zib no questions asked. He's young (25), and cheap for now. Don't like the direction Drury is/is not going.
Does BUF really deal two Cs this off-season?
I certainly think it's possible, and BUF is getting an early start on the Shane Wright sweepstakes.
If I'm Rasmus Dahlin, I'm not eager to stay.

I agree what the kid did was absolutely reprehensible and he should pay a huge price. I wouldn't want him in my team but I think we live in a new age. People have very short attention spans. Individuals rightly or wrongly have found out that if they ride out the initial shitstorm people move on quickly. The Canadiens probably made the calculation that getting him at 31 was worth it and that in 2 years or so when he makes it to the NHL this will all have died down. Again I'm explaining the probable Canadiens thinking not my feelings about it. I'm extraordinarily sensitive to the abuse of women.

And why yet another LW in the draft?
Makes sense. After yesterday the UFA market for Hamilton really dried up. If he wants to get paid there just aren't the suitors. If he wants a contender right now he'll have to take less to stay in Carolina.
I think there's a lot of ways to win a Cup, and the Rangers could be a wing driven team. My issue with acquiring Reinhart would have been that he's in need of a contract next year too. Other than that, I think I agree with you.

pj, you and I might be first line wingers on the Sabres this year.
I'm defense now (too old and slow for F), but if I had to fill in at forward I can, but I get gassed after about 3 shifts.
I have learned how to conserve energy on D picking my spots when to activate offensively - and when I do I basically stay in the offensive zone forever.
So, I might be second line wing on the Sabres, lol.
I like Werenski as much as I like Jones, hard to see him going anywhere without the acquiring team giving up a ton.
Also, getting nervous of this Eichel to the Habs talk.
Keep him in NY. I like Eichel, but I've been hearing Romanov and Kotkaniemi - to start. At some point you're weakening your team and the cap structure too much to make a deal work.
now, it seems like a legit chance he does.
Something maybe people don't know about Landeskog - is he's not a C (because Mackinnon is) but he's really good on the dots and takes a lot of the important face offs. So while I couldn't compare him and Eichel per se, you can make a pretty strong case for the same money less the prospects/picks you're better off with Landeskog

At this point my biggest fear is that Drury as the new GM on the block feels he HAS to pull a trigger on a big deal (nodding at Dolan in a dark corner of the bar) and it will prove to be very short sighted. As bad as those back-to-back losses to NYI felt at the time (and 13 - 1 in the three), they could well look a whole lot worse before this off-season is done.

Fair point. And while it's in retrospect, looking at the return for Rinehart, Drury could have figured what talent the Rangers might have been required to give Sabres in return (+/- picks) + his salary demands would/will be dwarfed by the return for Eichel. And it sure would make keeping Zib more feasible. (Thinking his asking price went up once Buch was dealt.)
At this point my biggest fear is that Drury as the new GM on the block feels he HAS to pull a trigger on a big deal (nodding at Dolan in a dark corner of the bar) and it will prove to be very short sighted. Agreed, I don't see anyone happy if we come back to training camp with Goodrow as the biggest addition. The franchise completely overreaction to the Washington game/Islander beat downs seems very real to me. Islanders are a better team beating down on a tired Rangers team - it happens with going teams.
The Washington game was unfortunate as well, especially with Lindgren and Trouba out. They weren't terrifying games in any capacity.
I critiqued a lot of moves, but was in full agreement with the plan the team had under JD/Gorton. Just not sure I know what Drury is doing yet.

CHP and pj, thanks. House is definitely an upgrade. Once all the moving headaches are nothing but a memory, I think we'll be very happy here.

I realize this is in hindsight to the two other terrible deals, but Danault is the guy I would have targeted all along. He's what this team really needs, a lockdown defender who's incredibly tough to play against.

I like both as role players, but man what a bad trade. Didn't BOS trade a 1st round pick for Kase (maybe it was a Backes salary dump)? Never seemed healthy or a fit in BOS.
And Ritchie is a tank on skates. Love to add either for vet min or low $$$ deals.
On MTL he was a 1C, and while he's really developed his game and is criminally neglected in Selke votes he's a traditional 3C.
Your 1C should be able to score and Danault cannot. He tops out as a 50 pt player which is fine until you acknowledge he's playing with a LW1 and RW1, and he won't score 15 goals. With the right line mates and right situation his value would be very high.

Strome is a better scorer.

Chytil has to be one of the worst face off guys in the league, Goodrow excels at face offs. it all starts with the face off. So often you analyze a goal against and it begins with a face off loss. Or you see an ineffective power play and it starts with a face off loss killing valuable time.
