The expansion draft is 7/21.
Next Sunday (7/18) protected lists will be made public
NHL Draft is 7/23 - 7/24
Free Agency opens 7/28
a lot of movement will happen IMO b/c of a lot of factors including the flat cap - teams with cap space can make out like bandits just for taking a bad contract. Tarasenko, Eichel, and more could have new homes not even considering movement to help with the expansion draft or free agency.
This article linked below from THW is great, not sure there is a ton of accuracy to it, but it's still a fun read.

at least we don't need to hear him say 100 times a game "remember that save" every time a goalie makes a save in a close game.
Wasn't Vegas able to build a cup contender from their expansion draft? Do the rules of the draft favor this or did Vegas just do an excellent job? Will Seattle start out in the playoffs every year too?
In fact, I expect that team to be historically bad.
I felt like they had 4 3rd lines, no top end talent, solid D and an inconsistent goalie.
Gallant deserves a ton of credit for getting them to the SCF, but I also underestimated Marc Andre Fleury when he plays well and I underestimated how far having 6 solid D can take you.
They also got career years from players like William Karlsson and Reilly Smith, but some teams misjudged their own talent like MIN trading Alex Tuch as a 6'4 225 pound 21 year old to protect some old stiff.
I may show my ass again, but I don't expect the Kraken to duplicate what Vegas did. but I'll wait to form an opinion (which will probably be a bad one again) until I see their roster

Vegas had an advantage in that many teams had given out No Movement Clauses like candy not knowing what the expansion draft rules would be. After Vegas the amount of NMC's has ground to a halt unless you are talking about the best of the best. Also, I think some teams overvalued their mediocre players more than they should have when Vegas came into the league. Columbus basically gave a 1st to Vegas so they would take Karlsson, who was a key player for Vegas. Teams don't seem as anxious to protect borderline 2nd line players this year if they have someone else in the system who can fill that role.

Also, a ton of teams paid Vegas to pick really good players (Fleury, for example).

Landing Luke Hughes would make it easier to convince Jack Hughes to stay in NJ long term.

Wonder how much it'll cost Drury for Seattle to pick up Howden
Wouldnt they want to have DeAngelo around to leave him unprotected for the expansion draft before buying him out? Or is there nothing gained by exposing him
I know not many of my fellow Isles fans would like this but I'd offer up Pelech and Beauvs rights for Seth Jones first. See if Columbus has any interest. if not then bring them back.

Obviously they still need to announce Gallant's coaching staff and Drury needs to hire an AGM, but I'm also guessing we hear about a Tony DeAngelo buyout possibly this week.

Yep on the off chance that Seattle takes him he fits the requirement. Rangers are fine they should be looking to pick up players before the ED because right now we would lose someone like Deangelo, Howden, Hajek Blackwell or Gauthier.

I suppose they could and the Rangers aren't in any rush, but I doubt Ron Francis will take DeAngelo. Plus, the Rangers could expose Bitetto and potentially Libor Hajek if they re-sign him this week like they did with Howden last week.
Most D heavy since 2012 I think.
I did read Owen Power, projected #1, is leaning toward returning to Michigan.
After seeing Caufield these playoffs after spending two years in the NCAA I'm not as firm in my belief I'd want the top pick in the NHL. I think maybe that wouldn't be terrible and probably even good for development, but it would hurt having the top pick in the year when the top pick isn't obviously NHL ready.
Sabres can't catch a break. not that it bothers me.

Luke Hughes is also likely going to Michigan for at least a year. I believe two more projected top 10 picks are also committed to Michigan.
I wouldn't buy him out either though. I'd see if Drury being in charge can lead to a reconciliation, even as a bottom pair DeAngelo playing is the best use of resources.
if he can't be moved.
It will save them money this year, but also add more dead space. Probably better off burying him in the minors - it's just one year left. I hate buying out players with one year left. it costs them something like $1.2M to buyout his $4.8M.
Maybe it's worth it, but still not a good outcome.
I don't know about Drury doing an about face with TDA; even if not/never confirmed, smoke was reported coming from the room about player anger/angst (KAM avoiding TDA at center ice intros). With all that he has on his plate, I don't know if Drury needs to perpetuate an apparent headache. Of course, if Drury is more 'gritty' than JD and Gorton, maybe he doesn't mind that stuff. (sarcasm?)

The issue is for all the headaches, DeAnglelo is a similar type of player to what we already have an abundance of, offensively-minded defensemen. And they're cheaper. He's poor in his own end and isn't physical or gritty.
If he were a 6'3" shutdown defenseman or a PK 3rd line shutdown forward, maybe they try giving him a blank slate. I just didn't see what he brings at this point.
@DarrenDreger
Sources indicate the Oilers and Blackhawks are making progress on a trade involving Duncan Keith. Not done. The process is moving along. Both GM’s are involved in league meetings today, however more discussion on the trade is expected.
pj, maybe you should have imposed restrictions on this thread so it does not devolve (degrade?) to a hometown dumpster fire when the bullets start flying and Drury's honeymoon (has he had one?) crashes and burns, or NYI or NJD.
I like a veteran presence, I've been vocal about that, but Keith turns 38 this week and is owed $11M over the next two years and coming off the worst year of his career.
not what I'm talking about with veteran presence.
Unless EDM is getting a high pick to take that contract and/or a young player I don't get it. CHI has traded Panarin and Teravainen (the latter to get rid of Bickell's contract) so will withold judgment until I see the details but I feel like this is EDM feeling like they're adding solid pieces around McDavid and Draisaitl.

lol, I don't care I know it's mostly NYR fans on here. I'll bring the discussion back to more NHL general topics, and closer to the draft, free agency NYR or NYI fans sometimes start their own threads.

Agreed PJ this has classic EDM blunder written all over it.
How dumb is this franchise giving a guy a two-year. $4.8mm per deal and then dumping him eleven games into the season? Idiotic.
And agreed with everyone on Keith. What an absolutely moronic franchise. Rangers blew Lundqvist's career but Edmonton is incompetent. McDavid is going to leave at some point.

Pending trade call, sounds like #Hawks Duncan Keith will indeed be heading to #Oilers in exchange for D Caleb Jones and a mid-round pick (3rd or 4th round).
Final details still being ironed out. @DFOHockey

Oilers are a total trainwreck. I haven't enjoyed watching hockey in 30 years.

Yep hopefully this draft is heading right into the Devs wheelhouse with how deep it is on D at the top. I'm not predicting they'll do it but it wouldn't shock me if Seattle took Subban. He's a good vet presense around the clubhouse and he only has 1 year left at 9 mill. They have to spend to the cap floor. I know they don't want to take on long term big $ deals but he'd fit right in with that philosophy.
@NYP_Brooksie
Rangers have hired Gord Murphy, Mike Kelly as assistants to join Gallant's staff, Post has learned. Both have prior experience with Gallant. Blueshirts still seeking third assistant.

Tony D was exiled by the previous regime. Big part of the reason JD and Jg were fired is that they signed Tony and then exiled him two weeks into the season
Tony obviously has behavioral issues. But these are best handled in the Locke room not by team officials grandstanding in a hyped environment with the pandemic and various political currents temporarily overflowing their bounds
IMO Tony D saga has more episodes left
His son is Connor Murphy on the Blackhawks.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they did but I expect the Devils to expose Will Butcher, Nathan Bastian, and/or Nick Merkley who are cheaper and have an upside.
I actually hope the Devils keep Subban because he is in the final year of his contract and he will work hard to secure another big deal. The Devils could trade him at the deadline if he has a good season plus they are able to eat some of his contract to help facilitate a trade.
Subban was my favorite Hab when he was traded, but I have to say that trade turned out better for MTL than NSH.
THW has the following team projected, which like LVG I feel like could be historically bad, but I like this roster more than I liked LVG.
MTL in the THW mock, traded two 2nd round picks to SEA so they take Byron and then they never mention what happens to Byron. I don't see him on the roster or in the AHL section nor do they mention a buyout.

Is this after Brett Howden is waived? :P
I really would like to lose Komarov or Eberle.

what happened to Paul Byron.

Aside from a projected trade (and protect?), did his standing fall so precipitously? He showed well in multiple SCP Series, had a couple of strong games vs Bolts, maybe faded in Games 4/5 best as I recall gleaning.
Not special. he's a max effort bottom 6 player, excels in PK and defensive role, but you're right scored some big playoff goals. MTL got him off waivers (from CAL?) but I don't mind losing him, not sure I want to pay 2 2nds to do it though.
If I'm paying two 2nd's it so they take Drouin.
Quote:
dont finish his career with the Isles I will be so angry. dude has taken so much shit from this fanbase, stayed unlike Tavares, and is just a solid all around player. Could shoot more but solid

The odds of Seattle taking Komarov are about the same as taking me. That only happens if the Isles give them a pick.
My guess would be that they take Leddy. He can still play and he has an expiring contract that they can move at the trade deadline for picks.
Agree 100% I mean McLeod is no star, but finally he showed promise this year and you don't just give away guys who can skate like that. I bet they do protect Bastian over him though. For some reason unbeknownst to anyone the organization seems to love him.
