Everyone's favorite Designated Hitter who can't fucking hit has put the ball in play twice since the AS break - a weak pop out and a double play. Before he just popped out, he had created more outs than ABs - not an easy task.

This m'fer can't play in the outfield. He's in a no-trade contract - 13 years for $325,000,000 at an AAV of $25,000,000 per year. Signed through 2028 when he'll be 38 forkin years old.

Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani - signed by the Angels on the exact same day as Stanton - is 26. He pitches and is a left-handed bat. Dude is making $3,000,000 this season.

Is Stanton the worst signing in sports history? It's certainly up there.

Michael Kay told a story during the Yankees/Angels series about Ohtani being in a press conference and saying something to the effect of "Wow, the Yankees really wanted me?" He was incredulous that NY wanted him here with the Yanks. And you've got a guy in Matsui who you could leverage in recruiting Ohtani. If that's not an indictment of Cashman and this toiletstain of a FO, I give up.

Oh yeah, they're being no-hit in the 4th inning by Nathan Eovaldi. Didn't he once pitch for the Yankees? What a complete and utter unmitigated disaster.

arguing that a fan throwing a ball at a player and hitting him is no big deal because everybody does it, or at least someone in Boston did it previously?

Alex Cora wasn’t the bad guy in this scenario. Sad that that has to be said.

Well my .02 on this is anyone throwing anything on the field is an asshole and has no respect for the game or players.

Having said that though, maybe just maybe if Verdugo doesn’t throw a ball up into the stands, he doesn’t have it tossed back and none of this happens. I’m not victim blaming but he does share some responsibility.

No one knows what the guy who threw the ball back was thinking but he was egged on pretty good to throw it back. Only he knows if he tried to hit Verdugo or just happened to hit him.

Either way he should’ve just kept the ball but sometimes people get caught up being egged on by a crowd and do stupid things. Not an excuse for his actions but I can see why this happened.
Players throw balls to fans all the time
Mike from Ohio : 7/18/2021 10:17 am : link
Verdugo is not partially or even slightly to blame. I don’t even blame the fans urging him to throw it back, because they probably didn’t mean “throw it at him.”

The fan who threw a ball and hit a player has 100% of the blame. Buying a ticket to the game doesn’t give you the right to do that no-class idiocy.

As for the reactions by Verdugo and Cora? Who cares? Did they not have the correct and measured reaction to dangerous idiocy from fans?

Considering the weather situation at the time, yeah, I took issue with them wasting time grandstanding. In Cora's case, he started an argument with the umpires for no apparent reason; did he want them to throw all the fans out because one idiot threw a ball? On the telecast, they remarked that Verdugo likes mixing it up with fans; he certainly came across like an asshole in the course of the events. Just standing there yelling "fuck you" over and over at the fan; very macho. Was he going to climb the wall into the crowd and fight the guy? Point the guy out to security so that he's ejected and get back to the dugout so the game can resume. I'd say the same thing if it was a Yankee player in Boston.
A perfect example of why the Yankees are what they are is right here

This is how laptops think. There's no perspective, there's no context, there's no cause and effect. Just a raw number thrown into the middle of pile and "data" to say you guys don't know what you're taking about.

The only guy on the Yankees with a higher wRC+ this year than Stanton is Judge. Is Stanton's 128 wRC+ amazing? No, it's somewhere between above average and great. It's below his career average.

Here's why Yankee fans who understand the big picture are so down on Stanton. In order for him to have value to the 2021 Yankees he has to put up MVP worthy numbers.

Anything less and he's an albatross because he takes up over 10% of Hal's arbitrary under tax salary cap by himself. Plus Cashman refuses to let him be an OF so he blocks Sanchez, Voit and Judge once or twice a week from DHing which weakens an already bad defense.

On a team that didn't have Sanchez, Voit and Judge he might be valuable at 128 wRC+, on the Yankees he's a redundant, expensive obstruction on a roster that doesn't fit together well.

Cora to just sit in the dugout quietly after one of his players was hit with an object thrown from the stands? That would go over real well with the players.

And you expect Verdugo should not get upset when a fan pelts him with a ball?

“Sometimes fans throw shit at you. Just part of the game! If you get injured, we’ll that’s why we have other guys on the bench.”

Not even partially to blame? What does the guy throw on the field if Verdugo doesn’t throw the ball up into the stands?

Again, the guy is an ass with no respect for the game for throwing anything on the field and is clearly the culprit here but Verdugo most definitely had something to do with what happened by throwing the ball up into the stands in the first place. Regardless of other players doing this.

I see players toss a ball into the stands after catching the last out and jogging off the field but before an inning isn’t exactly the smartest thing to do, especially in an away ballpark. I’m in no way excusing the fan but why as a player even give them any ammo?

Eman11 - this is about the stupidest take on the situation. He wasn't giving anyone ammo. Both visiting and home players toss balls in the stands after they finishing warming up all the time. It's a souvenir, usually directed at a kid. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

The only way that would be a problem is if he threw a ball at someone, as if to hurt them. That is not the case here.

Mike from Ohio : 7/18/2021 11:58 am : link
No player tosses a ball into the crowd thinking it is ammo that may be thrown back at them. Players - home and away - do this all the time and is a common goodwill gesture for the game.

Blaming a player for being hit with a ball he tossed to a fan is about the dumbest thing I have read on this board.

Well it might be stupid to you but I don’t think it’s the smartest thing in the world to be tossing a ball up into the bleachers at an away ballpark. You want a Red Sox fan or kid to have a souvenir that’s fine but make sure they get it. Otherwise you run the risk of some asshole doing exactly what happened.

To me it’s something that could’ve been avoided from the get go.

Again, I’m not excusing the fan in any way, he’s an idiot, deserved to be tossed and should be banned from future games.

I've been watching him lately and thinking that he stands so straight, lock-kneed and with stiff hips. Maybe this worked when he was younger, but how about getting in an athletic position by bending and relaxing? I really don't profess to be an expert or anything, but this jumped out at me.

No if they actually handed them to kids, but if they randomly tossed them up into he stands at an away game, I’d say they contributed to anything that happens afterwards. Good or bad.

Again, if those fans hit the players, the fans would clearly be 100% in the wrong, just like the asshole in the bleachers last night.

I’m no expert either, but it’s not how you start, it’s your body position when you load up and get into “launch” position. If anything I’d say he opens up his front shoulder a bit at times, which lots of big, strong players do. They try to muscle everything out, or pull everything, as overcompensation when they’re struggling. Gary Sanchez does the same thing. These guys hit best when they’re hitting to the gaps or opposite field.

I get it. But his bat speed and extension are getting slower. So he's not getting into the launch position until too late. He's behind on fastballs a lot....

Maybe you should go to work for Cashman. Who gives a fuck about his bat speed and extension ? He’s hitting for average and power. Of course he can’t buy a clutch hit with RISP, but neither can anyone else on the team. Frazier has about the best bat speed in MLB. How’s that working out?

Are you aware at how DHs around the league are hitting?

Stanton's 128 wRC+ is 38th in baseball this year, and 5th among DHs. As it turns out, having a solid OBP (that's "meaningless stat" for not making outs-- the most valuable commodity in the sport) while having some pop leads to good overall offense.

Now, you exclaim that wRC+ an inane statistic. Why is it inane? Persuade me why it's such a bad snapshot of a player's offensive contribution and I'll reconsider using it.

Instead, I think you'd rather bellyache about the much more meaningful sample of 5 plate appearances.

I'm not arguing that Stanton has been MVP-quality (what they are paying him to be), or even great. He is underperforming, as are a lot of Yankees. It's fine to criticize him, but don't be ridiculous. His underperformance is still that of a productive hitter.

Stanton might be overpaid, but he's not preventing the Yankees from getting whomever they want to get. Play him in left more. They decided how much they wanted to pay him and where they want to play him. Nothing is stopping them from buying whomever they want. They are the Yankeees. The Dodgers are spending 250 million this year; the Yankees are at 203 million.

Even ARod said tonight that he's a terrible fit for this team. I mean, he's always diplomatic and for him to say that only amplifies Stanton's horrific contribution to a team that needs athletic, pliable and reliable players.

The signing was a secondary option and a desperate move in response to not making a big splash with Ohtani. It was typical Yankees flexing and I think we all didn't like the move.

Throwing money at something and hoping it sticks. Hope is not a strategy.

It's clear the Yankees are behind the curve when it comes to architecting a roster that can win in a multitude of ways.

his cold streaks quicker. He has to start playing the field just from a talent allocation standpoint. But he's not as far off as some people act like he is from what we should be expecting out of him at the plate.

Through 72 games, he's hitting .258/.802 with 15 HRs.

On July 19, 2017, through 91 games, he was hitting .275/.946 with 28 HRs. In his best year, his production came in spurts - just like here. He hit 38 HRs after July 4th in 2017, including 7 2-HR games. Even in that season, he had extended cold stretches early on - including one 14 game stretch without a HR.

The way he gets hot, he could easily be hitting .280 with 30 HRs this time next month. Obviously I don't want to make excuses for the $300M man, but I just think some perspective helps.

Even ARod said tonight that he's a terrible fit for this team. I mean, he's always diplomatic and for him to say that only amplifies Stanton's horrific contribution to a team that needs athletic, pliable and reliable players.

He's a one tool player being paid a five tool salary. It's ridiculous.

I agree completely and have felt this way since the day of the trade

The signing was a secondary option and a desperate move in response to not making a big splash with Ohtani. It was typical Yankees flexing and I think we all didn't like the move.

Throwing money at something and hoping it sticks. Hope is not a strategy.

It's clear the Yankees are behind the curve when it comes to architecting a roster that can win in a multitude of ways.

And speak of the devil - Stanton weakly grounds out to end the inning.

B - Hope you're well and good to see you back here. I remember well when they traded for him and I think if you could find an archived thread from here, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that didn't like the move. Maybe you or rnargi didn't, and if so you've probably been validated (although I would argue a bit with just how much you blame him) as it just hasn't really fit even though he's still been generally productive. But most complaining about the trade I think are solely doing so in hindsight. With what we knew at the time, nearly everyone liked the deal. And in 2018 he was very productive, played 158 games and about half of them in the outfield. I don't understand why the Yankees have handled him the way they have since then.

And on Ohtani, the Yankees were considered the favorite, they cleared a bunch of international signing space, but he came out and said he wanted to play on the west coast and even a smaller market. Can't really blame the front office there. See the link from that time

I was happy when they traded for Stanton

He was an outfielder and the MVP of the National League. Now he's the 5th best DH out of 15 teams but his team has multiple options at DH that he's blocking. I'm sure he would play the OF if given the chance. That's not his call. But if he's the everyday DH and only good it's not enough to be a net positive. The 6th best DH is being paid 600K for comparison.
As a Mets fan what I don’t get about Stanton

Is how he isn’t good enough for the outfield anymore. He was gold glove caliber on the Marlins. I get it’s semi duplicative to judge and you want to protect him from injuries but did that ability completely erode overnight that they won’t even consider it anymore?
