Everyone's favorite Designated Hitter who can't fucking hit has put the ball in play twice since the AS break - a weak pop out and a double play. Before he just popped out, he had created more outs than ABs - not an easy task.
This m'fer can't play in the outfield. He's in a no-trade contract - 13 years for $325,000,000 at an AAV of $25,000,000 per year. Signed through 2028 when he'll be 38 forkin years old.
Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani - signed by the Angels on the exact same day as Stanton - is 26. He pitches and is a left-handed bat. Dude is making $3,000,000 this season.
Is Stanton the worst signing in sports history? It's certainly up there.
Michael Kay told a story during the Yankees/Angels series about Ohtani being in a press conference and saying something to the effect of "Wow, the Yankees really wanted me?" He was incredulous that NY wanted him here with the Yanks. And you've got a guy in Matsui who you could leverage in recruiting Ohtani. If that's not an indictment of Cashman and this toiletstain of a FO, I give up.
Oh yeah, they're being no-hit in the 4th inning by Nathan Eovaldi. Didn't he once pitch for the Yankees? What a complete and utter unmitigated disaster.
The Yankees were very vocal about wanting Ohtani and he was clear that he wanted to play on the west coast. End of story.
As far as Stanton goes, as a Yankee fan you have to laugh or you'll cry. Cashman made a big stink about how he didn't want Arod back and it was all Hank and not his fault that he was stuck with and had to manage around such a horrible contract.
So what does he do? Before that horrible contract was over he gives Ellsbury 150 million and you had to think ok that has to be the worst contract in Yankee history. "Belushi Voice" - But no, before that contract is over he trades for Stanton.
Seriously why do people defend this guy?
Stanton up. He'll make it 3-1.
You sir, can eat a bag of dingleberried assholes.

it was like he was so surprised he got one to hit he didnt know what to do

Great point. This front office/coaching staff is lost on pretty much everything.
Someone please remind me why they brought Gardner back? If you need to keep bringing a guy like him back, you're clearly not doing your job as a front office with roster management. He sucks
I think someone threw something at Verdugo in left field, which is never acceptable, but by his and Cora's reactions, you'd think someone tried to shoot him or something. Just the usual Red Sox shenanigans.
Stanton's contract is a problem and certainly he has had a spectacular fall. Signing him was a classic Yankees move, in the sense that the Yankees are a rich organization and were able to use their wealth to build a deep farm system and then use their prospects and cash to acquire elite players. The problem is that he didn't remain an elite player — they thought they were getting Reggie Jackson and he sure isn't that.
Disclosure: I'm not a Yankees fan, so maybe I just don't get it.
Absolute morons. Grow up.
Yes, it's a joke this game is being played in horrible conditions. Suspend it and finish it tomorrow.

Oh please. I've been to numerous Yankees vs Sox games at Clownshoes Park in Boston. Sat in the bullpen seats and elsewhere. The shit those asshole fans threw at Yankees pitchers and outfielders was insane. I was also at the game where some fuckwit grabbed Sheffield in RF. What's Cora want the umps to do? Fuck off. Boston is insufferable.

Wtf are you talking about? Morons? Grow up? Take your sorry ass Red Sox fan out of here. You don’t get to come here to start shit, assclown.

I think that's basically what the umpire told him. The fan was ejected, as he should've been, but beyond that, that's not much else the umps can do. Cora was probably trying to get the Yanks to forfeit or some garbage like that.
You are a real prize. GO FUCK YOURSELF! Asswipe.

Did you have such indignation when a Sox fan hit Stanton with a ball two years ago at Fuckshoes Park?
They technically get one challenge per game, but if they keep winning the challenges, they can keep challenging until they lose one.

OK. Fair enough.

Wait, are you denying that you’re a Red Sox fan now?
And Poon was apparently reading MAD Magazine in the shitter, then wiped back to front.
Verdugo said he was trying to throw the ball to a Red Sox fan in the crowd and missed. A Yankees fan caught the ball and Verdugo said he heard the crowd telling the Yankees fan to throw it back. The fan threw it back and Verdugo got hit. He said he was not injured by the hit.
I get that fans should not throw things on the field. It happened in Fenway when a Red Sox fan threw a HR ball back and hit Stanton as he rounded the bases. Stanton kind of flipped his hand up as in a gesture to say like what was that?
But I have a question about Verdugo’s story. If you knew a Yankee fan caught the ball and heard the fans saying throw it back, why are you surprised and irate? Why are you throwing balls up into the stands in between innings when you’re on the road? I can only imagine what would happen in Fenway if a Yankees player tried to toss a ball to a Yankees fan and a drunken Red Sox fan who is ten beers deep in the 4th inning catches the thing.
Why did Cora and Verdugo make such a huge dramatic deal about it? Then every time any play was remotely close, Cora’s calling for a review, that bottom of the 6th took forever, and then I believe they went through about 14 resin bags lol.
Whole thing is weird to me.
But the reason the Yankees stink isn't entirely his fault. He's not having the worst offensive year.
LeMahieu has been average at best, and Sanches, Odor, TORRES, Gradner, Frazier, Andujar, anything we trot out at first base and Sanchez less the occasional homer, have been abysmal.
Gleybar Torres has had one of the biggest regressions in all of baseball.

I agree. This is well beyond the ineptitude of one player. The team has had more success over the past few years without Stanton killing it. This is more about the regression of several players, injuries and the continuous process of handing out bad contracts (in addition to taking on Stanton’s).

Since the All Star Break? You posted this in the middle of the second game since the All Star Break.
The only guy on the Yankees with a higher wRC+ this year than Stanton is Judge. Is Stanton's 128 wRC+ amazing? No, it's somewhere between above average and great. It's below his career average.
But freaking out because he didn't have a strong 5 or so plate appearances since the All Star Break is absurd.
Alex Cora wasn’t the bad guy in this scenario. Sad that that has to be said.

As I said at the time, it was a shitty thing to do by the fan and he certainly deserved to be ejected, but the histrionics by Verdugo and Cora were completely over the top.

Well my .02 on this is anyone throwing anything on the field is an asshole and has no respect for the game or players.
Having said that though, maybe just maybe if Verdugo doesn’t throw a ball up into the stands, he doesn’t have it tossed back and none of this happens. I’m not victim blaming but he does share some responsibility.
No one knows what the guy who threw the ball back was thinking but he was egged on pretty good to throw it back. Only he knows if he tried to hit Verdugo or just happened to hit him.
Either way he should’ve just kept the ball but sometimes people get caught up being egged on by a crowd and do stupid things. Not an excuse for his actions but I can see why this happened.
The fan who threw a ball and hit a player has 100% of the blame. Buying a ticket to the game doesn’t give you the right to do that no-class idiocy.
As for the reactions by Verdugo and Cora? Who cares? Did they not have the correct and measured reaction to dangerous idiocy from fans?

Considering the weather situation at the time, yeah, I took issue with them wasting time grandstanding. In Cora's case, he started an argument with the umpires for no apparent reason; did he want them to throw all the fans out because one idiot threw a ball? On the telecast, they remarked that Verdugo likes mixing it up with fans; he certainly came across like an asshole in the course of the events. Just standing there yelling "fuck you" over and over at the fan; very macho. Was he going to climb the wall into the crowd and fight the guy? Point the guy out to security so that he's ejected and get back to the dugout so the game can resume. I'd say the same thing if it was a Yankee player in Boston.
Here's why Yankee fans who understand the big picture are so down on Stanton. In order for him to have value to the 2021 Yankees he has to put up MVP worthy numbers.
Anything less and he's an albatross because he takes up over 10% of Hal's arbitrary under tax salary cap by himself. Plus Cashman refuses to let him be an OF so he blocks Sanchez, Voit and Judge once or twice a week from DHing which weakens an already bad defense.
On a team that didn't have Sanchez, Voit and Judge he might be valuable at 128 wRC+, on the Yankees he's a redundant, expensive obstruction on a roster that doesn't fit together well.
And you expect Verdugo should not get upset when a fan pelts him with a ball?
“Sometimes fans throw shit at you. Just part of the game! If you get injured, we’ll that’s why we have other guys on the bench.”
I am more interested in following the minors now.

Not even partially to blame? What does the guy throw on the field if Verdugo doesn’t throw the ball up into the stands?
Again, the guy is an ass with no respect for the game for throwing anything on the field and is clearly the culprit here but Verdugo most definitely had something to do with what happened by throwing the ball up into the stands in the first place. Regardless of other players doing this.
I see players toss a ball into the stands after catching the last out and jogging off the field but before an inning isn’t exactly the smartest thing to do, especially in an away ballpark. I’m in no way excusing the fan but why as a player even give them any ammo?

The only way that would be a problem is if he threw a ball at someone, as if to hurt them. That is not the case here.
Blaming a player for being hit with a ball he tossed to a fan is about the dumbest thing I have read on this board.

Eman11 - this is about the stupidest take on the situation. He wasn't giving anyone ammo. Both visiting and home players toss balls in the stands after they finishing warming up all the time. It's a souvenir, usually directed at a kid. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
The only way that would be a problem is if he threw a ball at someone, as if to hurt them. That is not the case here.
Well it might be stupid to you but I don’t think it’s the smartest thing in the world to be tossing a ball up into the bleachers at an away ballpark. You want a Red Sox fan or kid to have a souvenir that’s fine but make sure they get it. Otherwise you run the risk of some asshole doing exactly what happened.
To me it’s something that could’ve been avoided from the get go.
Again, I’m not excusing the fan in any way, he’s an idiot, deserved to be tossed and should be banned from future games.
No if they actually handed them to kids, but if they randomly tossed them up into he stands at an away game, I’d say they contributed to anything that happens afterwards. Good or bad.
Again, if those fans hit the players, the fans would clearly be 100% in the wrong, just like the asshole in the bleachers last night.
I’m no expert either, but it’s not how you start, it’s your body position when you load up and get into “launch” position. If anything I’d say he opens up his front shoulder a bit at times, which lots of big, strong players do. They try to muscle everything out, or pull everything, as overcompensation when they’re struggling. Gary Sanchez does the same thing. These guys hit best when they’re hitting to the gaps or opposite field.
