NFT: WTF happened at Nationals Park last night?

Jints in Carolina : 7/18/2021 12:56 pm
I am just reading about the chaos there.

Luckily no one was killed.

Scary scene.

on this same night blocks away a 6-year old girl was shot and killed and 5 others shot and injured and it's not news. wonder why.

On this exact same street a few weeks ago two 13/14 year old girls hijacked and killed an uber eats driver.

I read national coverage of both those incidents, I'm not sure why you think they weren't news, or are evidence that this somehow shouldn't be.

There’s also the very slight possibility that it got more coverage because it caused the suspension of a Major League Baseball game where players were letting fans into the dugouts for safety.

clearly thrunthrunblue didn't feel those other incidents had the same gravity as this one or he wouldn't have reacted the way he did. Why do you think that is?

And there was nowhere near the same coverage and I never said last night's incident shouldn't be news, so not sure where or why you would jump to that conclusion when it's nowhere in my post - explicitly or implicitly.

What I did say is this specific incident is not evidence "...we are officially in the midst of an all out societal implosion..." when in that exact neighborhood - often - other and worse incidents happened that same exact night and other recent nights.

Yes, because there are a lot of people who benefit from divisiveness, the more divided the better, so expect this to continue or get worse.

the event last night at Nationals Park was small in the big picture and my point was thruthrunblue was being dramatic for his reaction to that incident. That was it.

I highlighted several worse examples of horrific nature that happened on that same street or close that did not illicit the same response. obviously the stadium being full had an impact to the reaction, but it doesn't change the facts.

if people think that's it, that drive by shooting last night near a stadium during a baseball game is what signifies the break, straw that broke the camel's back, now we're imploding, great, I don't have the energy or inclination to debate anyone tonight.

I was simply drawing an analogy
thrunthrublue : 7/18/2021 10:07 pm : link
with the historically romantic presence of field of dream's american baseball story... all in with its innocence and nostalgia, then flashed forward to now...and illuminated a contrast with this weekend's pro baseball update, now our baseball games come with car to car gunfights.....and called it "field of screams" .....american cities have become a dark bloody mosaic of ambulances, body bags and crime scene tape, regardless of any pitch counts.

I appreciate the clarification, and I can appreciate the allegory in your post.
Premium seat section cleared out first
bcinsd : 7/19/2021 12:18 am : link
I was watching the game and the first thing that made me aware there was a problem was that the whole section of premiums seats behind home plate was suddenly empty. Nobody in the aisles. Completely vacated. The stands were still full behind the Padres dugout and the rest of the stadium. At that point nobody knew what was happening. Seemed odd.

No, you called it 'Field Of (D) Screams'. May as well own it.

Of course those incidences that get the most coverage are the ones that seem to cause the most division.

Yep - but that ship has sailed. Doesn't sell enough clicks or ads. It is why the latest news always has to be the "best" or the "worst" ever and why wild exaggerations and slants are made with each story.

It works though. Look at the moron above who calls our country lawless. If he wants lawless, he probably should be teleported to the Wild West or when the colonies were setting up.

Social Media has created echo chambers where contrary opinions, arguments, and even facts can be dismissed; critical thought has diminished and only the opinions that confirm and reaffirm ones own biases remain.

Shut it off, you’ll be happier and healthier and have less to complain about (I know that’s what’s attractive to many).

That's not to say that BBC World News or the news coming from Germany isn't biased (I don't know enough to say if it is), but it is refreshing to just hear an event stated without additional commentary.

I agree and it is refreshing. But in our country, it's not commercially viable. That's the CNN of the 80s basically.

Agreed. If you've ever seen the relationships between media members and politicians, the media is literally in bed (if not blood related) with politicians. Conflicts of interest are prevalent, and regularly ignored.

I had a journalism professor tell me years ago — treat the news like your diet.

Personally I love all forms of news — straight news, advocacy, commentary, tabloid.

The key is to seek out a diversity of outlets, and pick and choose what you believe is honest and in good faith.

There is good straight news coverage domestically. My go to for just the headlines is the Christian Science Monitor.
I don't think it would happen the way i envision it

but I'd love it if Netflix (or someone similar) started a morning news show. They are already adding gaming to their offering (rumored to be partnering with sony/playstation) and I can see a live tv with their own live programming happening within a few years.

This can end up being another biased sourced but its also an opportunity for someone to step up and make their own programming without any historical baggage and allegiances the main networks have.

That’s an interesting guess. I’d be very intrigued by a news model with no advertising allegiances.

Ehh, just ignore it. DVR exists too so just fast forward whatever minimal political showing exists. I don't even notice it most of the time because I don't care, its that meaningless to me.

Kneeling caused the biggest overeaction I've ever seen in sports. Initially i was a part of that overreaction but I've come to realize it means something to certain people and doesn't mean much to me so I can just ignore it.

And that's any news story too - people are choosing to be outraged by things when they can instead ignore it since it usually has absolute zero impact on their day to day.

My parents (divorced) are polar opposites politically and its taught me to be ok telling them not to involve me in their political views. I'm not mad at them for it, its who they are. But I respectfully tell them that I don't want to be around it and that theres hundreds of other things we can talk about.

I agree. It's why I stopped participating in sociopolitical arguments online, both here and on venues like Facebook. Not worth the agita, not by a long shot.

As to your larger point, it reminds me of a moment from last summer, when there were so many riots around the country. You watch that kind of news coverage and it makes you despair about the state of American society, race relations, etc. In the middle of that, though, our family made several trips to Jamestown Beach, a river beach on the banks of the James near Williamsburg. It tends to draw a very diverse crowd, with many black and Hispanic families attending, and it was quite the tonic to the media-sponsored craziness. People of all races and ethnicities, mostly families with young children, all having fun together in a friendly atmosphere. No tension whatsoever.

I agree... no need to ruin a holiday over politics. The people who do that have real mental issues.

We were at our annual New Years Eve party at a friend's house. Same 15+ people there every year. We are all really good friends. One of the individuals though cannot resist politics. She will always find a way to turn a discussion about something unrelated into politics.

Two years ago, she would not stop. So, I got up and got my coat. Asked my wife if she was coming with me or if she wanted me to pick her up later. The friend then realized how serious I was (or how ridiculous she was) and promised to end the discussion.

I have a sister who is so far in to politics that she absolutely cannot resist talking about it... ever. Now I see her maybe 2x per year and she lives not even an hour away. I also had to block her from social media.
