NFT: Mets: Diaz benched; Rojas ejected; Mets win

Vanzetti : 7/18/2021 4:59 pm
Jauss goes to May for the save after Mets came back from 6-0 deficit.

It was a comedy of errors for Mets last two days but they come up with what could be a season Saving victory.
How do you know Diaz was benched?

Did Jauss say he benched Diaz?
Conforto comes through in the 9th.

Team kept battling all days.

Saturday’s loss hurt. But today’s win might be a boost.

Loup’s inning … wow. Three straight hits and he gets out of it. Fantastic!

LFG!!!
An inspiring win
Chris L. : 7/18/2021 5:10 pm : link
and we didn't disintegrate at the end. Oh yeah...Rojas wasn't there at the end to screw it up because he got ejected...just kidding.

Dude c’mon, he was benched. Of course they are not going to say that. You never say a guy was benched. You say he was unavailable, resting or whatever.

But make no metaled, Jauss bypassed him. Doubt Tojas would have. Perfect scenario actually. Jauss can be the bad guy
Blankenhorn is the unsung hero

That three run HR put life back in the team

Great job by Loup striking out 3 guys in a row after kissing the bases. Smith with s fee scoreless as well
Eh, Diaz will be back closing again I’m sure

It goes without saying that it is not permanent.

Like all player oriented managers, Rojas has difficulty discipline guys. He is Jim Fassel not Tom Coughlin

well teams often don't use their closer back to back days, but either way, if I were Jauss I *would* have went to Diaz.

If Diaz is mentally weak (and physically ineffective) the rest of the way this team is going nowhere.

About Diaz not pitching is that the Mets didn’t want him to pitch against the Pirates again. He will be available for closing against Cincinnati.
Ya, Diaz threw 24 pitches last night.
BigBlueNH : 7/18/2021 6:19 pm : link
I don't know what Rojas would have done, but it is no surprise that they would not go back to him 15 hours later. I would not interpret it as a benching.

He threw 24 pitches after not pitching for 5 days because of break. But yeah He is being rested.

I really don’t get denying the obvious when it comes to Diaz. He has been awful three straight seasons. Yeah he can dominate when he has his control but he often has no control.

Plus I think you guys know he is completely unreliable, You are just mad because I said it. If I had blood pressure machine hooked up to each of you, I bet the numbers would be through the roof every time Diaz came in

two things can be true.

Diaz has been bad most of his tenure and he probably (or at least allow possibly) wasn't going to pitch anyway in a day game after pitching in a night game.

It is not unusual for any closer to be unavailable in a day game after pitching in a night game even if he had retired the side in order.

that's just the reality when he gets beat that's how and everyone gets beat once in a while.

we also know he sometimes loses his control and also sometimes gets a little frazzled. Add the 2 together and there will be games like the other night. But when he's been as good as he has so far this year all you can do about it is forget it and move on.

As bad of a way as that was to lose, to come back and win the way they did today was even better. Unbelievable resiliency and an absolute clutch dead center homer by Conforto - who badly needs to step up with Lindor out.
Well, Conforto has been taking better swings lately...

Saturday on Rojas for the 8th, IMO

Now that I've blamed Rojas for Saturday..

I'm gonna give him credit for yesterday!

This team was DEAD. Then he pulled a trick from his ancestral tool bag and went absolutely ballistic on a play that didn't warrant it... And woke this damn team up.

Huge s/o to Blankenhorn, Smith, and Conforto of course.

But I loved seeing Rojas go nuts.

This - also if you're a sabre metrics guy the pitch Stallings hit for the slam had an expected AVG of .030 - had an exit velocity of 97 and traveled all of 346 feet.
He's still converted 19 of 22 save opportunities with 52 strike outs and only 15 walk in 36 + innings.

Interesting. That's a big concern.
Not just the spin rate

But I have to think it has curtailed his ability to control the location which is really what gets him in trouble (home runs notwithstanding of course).

It appears to me the performance of pretty much every one of our pitchers, including deGrom, Walker and especially Stroman, has suffered since the MLB crack down on the sticky stuff.

Stroman's ERA was 2.40 in June. He only pitched 1 inning (hip?) his first start after the crack down in mid-late June. Then 3 innings in his next start; to end June.

In 3 starts in July, his ERA is 4.80.

Not good.

Great find - if anything just makes me feel a little bit better about him "Robles'ing" it. Looks like statistically he wasn't wrong and a bad luck ball just carried.

Breaks like that do even out though, he's had 2 or 3 homers go foul by inches/feet this year. I'm not in love with a closer who gets beat deep but he's been very good so it's one of those things where it is what it is. I'm glad they have other options if they need them with Familia and Lugo.

The deGrom situation is disturbing
ZGiants98 : 7/19/2021 12:31 pm : link
And has really handcuffed the Mets imo.

Our postseason run and whether or not we are a true contender is riding on his health.

Without deGrom we aren’t winning a WS, regardless of the deadline. With him, we are very likely a serious threat still.

I’d probably just ride the situation out. Don’t want to trade big pieces for a run just to have him be injured and we are quickly eliminated in the postseason but also don’t want to sell in case deGrom does get healthy and can give us a chance.

Overall the situation sucks and I would seriously guard against giving him a long term deal next year again if he opts out.

His age plus body type (still listed at 180 lbs) isn’t on our side.

Vanzetti : 7/19/2021 2:23 pm : link
Dom just has not hit and playing Pillar would upgrade two positions defensively, as he would play CF and Nimmo would slide over to LF, where he is actually a plus defender

This season has just been bizzare
bhill410 : 7/19/2021 2:41 pm : link
All around. Essentially they have threaded water so remain in first while rest of division can’t get out of its own way. Despite that I am not sure I have “felt good” about this season for more than 3 days in a clip. The degrom stuff has just been a weight you constantly worry about and it seems like every week there is a significant injury.

Completely with you. I was very excited to enjoy this team coming into the season but there is only so much "but they are in first!" you can convince yourself of. The injuries are non-stop and the offense is generally very hard to watch. I expected this to be a very good offensive team with 3 good SP's (deGrom, Stroman, Carrasco) with Walker being a ?? (was wrong on him obviously) and Syndergaard eventually giving them a big-time top 4+ Walker and Peterson. Instead, deGrom has been ridiculous (but hurt... 5 times), Walker has been very good, Stroman solid and the offense pathetic.
I would love to go back and run the season back..

I feel like the offense tumbled out of the gates and still just hasn't regained footing. It's been really confusing to watch, because I still look around and don't see any place I'd want a significant talent upgrade in the field.

pjcas18 : 7/19/2021 3:52 pm : link
make sense to me to be aggressive with deGrom's health questionable, the bullpen imploding, Lindor out for a month (or who knows if longer), Stroman inconsistent since the foreign substance ban, etc.

I think they should stand pat, or sell parts off (like Stroman, Diaz, Familia, May, JDD, Conforto maybe).
Don’t think they should be too aggressive in adding but
Metnut : 7/19/2021 4:20 pm : link
selling off parts while in first place in late July doesn’t make any sense to me. Even with the injuries the Mets roster doesn’t seem demonstrably worse then any of the other teams in division.
Berrios
DanMetroMan : 7/19/2021 4:26 pm : link
has been vocal about wanting to explore FA so yeah "Cohen is rich" is true, I'd be very, very careful paying a bounty for 1.5 years of a good (not great) SP. I would not go that route given the rumored cost.
Unless the Mets
pjcas18 : 7/19/2021 4:26 pm : link
are confident they will have deGrom, Syndergaard, and Carrasco in October, I'd sell.

selling in first place is bold, but sometimes smart when being in first place is built off fool's gold or a mediocre division or players not currently playing - and your team doesn't seem like it will truly be competitive.

Something to be said about living to fight another day, and being stronger when you do.

No offense, but the cancellation of the opening weekend - while it sucked - has absolutely zero impact on this season. I never bought into that in the first place, and 90 games later it should have zero impact on the season.

As we've seen over and over again in past years - how you play in Spring Training doesn't necessarily spill over into the beginning of the season. The Mets could have easily lost that opening series to the Nationals.

Injuries have absolutely decimated this club. Like many clubs. If we can somehow hang on to the division (because it's the only way any team out of the west will get to the playoffs) and be relatively healthy, then we have as good a chance as any. But there have been a lot of disappointments so far this season.

It stinks but, hey, at least we are in first! (Sorry DMM - couldn't resist!)

I fully admit I'm a pessimistic sports fan but I've really tried not to rain on anybody's parade this season, I just haven't enjoyed it as I anticipated. I've enjoyed baseball on the whole but I thought they would be much more entertaining and quite frankly haven't been. Their run differential is now +5, 14th best in baseball... Dodgers...+154!!
And
DanMetroMan : 7/19/2021 5:15 pm : link
yeah, I guess what I'm saying is... where are fans supposed to be excited about what they have seen? deGrom has been otherworldly(but the injuries have taken their toll)

offensively

Conforto awful
McNeil disappointing
Lindor disappointing
Dom disappointing
Alonso very solid but not the 2019 monster
McCann disappointing
Nimmo (when healthy) has mashed
Davis (when healthy) has mashed (but apparently is now a bench player)

even some of the guys who have provided some good moments quietly have ugly numbers. Pillar, Peraza etc. It's tough to really get excited to watch these games

they haven't hit to their potential but I have 0 issue winning with pitching, defense, and timely hitting. In fact I prefer it because time and time again we see that kind of baseball played in the playoffs. In the inverse how many times have we seen teams mash their way to 100+ wins while being sloppy in the field or in the BP and losing quick?

yes to go anywhere in the playoffs a few guys are going to have to play much better than they have so far. And obviously JDG pretty much needs to be healthy. But as of now that's entirely possible.

at the deadline, fine.

Aggressively add at the cost of Mauricio, Ginn, or better, I don't think I can support.

Especially for a rental.

Too much unknown, I'm normally a "go for it" guy and I value major league success at the expense of the farm all the time, but i fear doing so this year with questions to deGrom and everyone after him in the rotation along with a suddenly leaky bullpen would limit the ability to do so in future years when it may make more sense to do so.

I don't see this team winning with pitching and defense without deGrom and Lindor and JDD back in the lineup.

Haven't hit to their potential is maybe the understatement of the year. They are 29th in runs scored (4 ahead of the Pirates)

they are 1 currently run per game below both 2019 and 2020 with basically the same personnel so at some point there's going to be some regression to the mean. part of that is injuries and part of it is some guys just having not great years so far.

maybe it's a snakebit year and they just never start scoring runs for whatever reason but this isn't 2015 with john mayberry hitting cleanup, eric campbell talking about hitting the ball hard, and everyone praying for a good 3rd opinion on wright's spine.
