Last summer I crashed my bicycle and broke my wrist and needed surgery... It was terrifying, but I know I'm lucky. SERIOUS accidents happen all the time. It's a great sport and activity, but fortune can turn on a dime.
I can't send up enough thoughts and love to coach and his family today.
And there are numerous cases of cars running into bikers. As an avid biker, I choose more carefully when I get out there. Have had at least a half dozen close calls.
It's freakin' terrifying to write a bike out here sometimes.
Even where there are bike lanes, drivers are distracted and reckless. I can't tell you how many times I've been on my bike and watched a car pull up to an intersection and get ready to drive through without even ever looking at me. You have to assume that the driver won't see you until you are splattered on their windshield. But there's nothing you can do about drivers rear-ending you when you're in a bike line. Drivers rear-end a cyclist, they get a dent on their fender, the cyclist gets killed.
I dont begrudge anyone doing whatever they want to do within the confines of the law, but you have to be out of your mind to be riding a bicycle for sport in the vicinity of moving vehicles.

Bikes have as much right to the road as any other vehicle — but yes, it's very, VERY dangerous in high-traffic or high-speed areas.
A prominent NY actress got killed recently when she was crossing the street near Lincoln Center and got hit by a scooter. Idiots with control of wheeled vehicles — deadly for anything that gets in their way.
One of my best friends died in a bike-car crash in 1998. I heard he went over the handlebars without a helmet. I don't like to think about it.

I work in NYC and deal with the aftermath of Bike accidents all the time. Sometimes it's motorists not paying attention and hitting the bikers but I also see Bikers go through red lights, ride on sidewalks into Pedestrians, and completely disregard all the rules of the roadway.
All that aside, hope for a speedy recovery for this gentleman
Only use them when I’m cycling to a trail. Fortunately, DC has a bunch of trails, but I’m on heightened alerts during have rear view mirrors when sharing roads with cars.
RE: I try to stay off the road as much as possible.

I’m on heightened alert and use rear view mirrors when sharing the road with cars. This still doesn’t eliminate the risk of a distracted driver.
I got good and fucked up when I was teenager. But I can’t run these days b/c of back issue so I started riding again. Just around the neighborhood and I’m staying off the highways. I mean, I know there’s an element of risk. But, people drown in the ocean and I’m not going to stop swimming. I ski, people get good and fucked up on the slopes. There’s hunting accidents and car accidents. Fishing accidents. Just yesterday I missed a step going down the stairs to my home office and got pretty banged up. Closet I’ve come to death is covid. Can’t be too afraid to live. Just never know.
And motorist should seriously look out and put the fucking phone away.

Motorist probably won't face any charges because not under the influence.
Put in many road bike miles in my 20's-40s when I lived in California but too many texters now.
