Alabama QB (22 career passes) close to $1M in NIL deals

DCOrange : 7/20/2021 2:59 pm
I am not sure people expected to see these dollars so quickly. And it certainly cements the notion that only a handful of schools will ever win the title.

What happens with transfers? I assume a star can transfer and reestablish more deals at his new school.

The people who will make out huge
BigBlueNH : 7/20/2021 4:33 pm : link
will fall into 2 categories: (1) the top few dozen college football and basketball stars; and (2) attractive female college athletes of all sports with a TikTok presence. I'm thinking of the Cavinder twins of Fresno St. hoops and LSU gymnast Olive Dunne, but I'm sure there are MANY others who will join them. Women will make a lot more $$ than men under this, IMO.
Alumni

Alumni and fans at large programs such as Bama OSU Michigan LSU will support their teams by buying jerseys, supporting web sites and hiring players to endorse products.
Good for Bryce Young...

It's been a long time coming.

Although I do wonder if one of the unintended consequences might be players becoming less interested in school work; and eligibility becomes an issue when you are pocketing these big dollars...
this is going to benefit the top schools

with national brands as well. All else being equal, many kids pick programs like Duke because of the national attention and brand recognition. Not only do many kids want they attention, but they think it will enhance their future marketing opportunities. The reality though, and what the other schools sell, is that if the player is good enough, they will go pro just as easily (for example playing basketball at Duke vs. a Virginia or Villanova).

But now, playing at Duke will come with immediate financial incentives because the national attention will make the student athlete more likely to have social media influence and therefore gain larger NIL opportunities.
what I'm interested to see down the road
PaulBlakeTSU : 7/20/2021 6:07 pm : link
is looking at NIL endorsement opportunities for college basketball players compared with the HS kids that go abroad, the G League, or to ventures like Overtime Elite.

Colleges have argued that their brand recognition, and the infrastructure they created and invested in, and the media partnerships they have, offer value to the athletes in terms of showcasing talent and marketing themselves for future endeavors. Now will be a chance to see if that bears out in the marketplace.
This should be very helpful, for St.John's

As a NYC showcase!

I would hope it keeps kids in school

Agree. Never underestimate how much money will come in from thirsty, loser males.

Never heard of Olivia Dunne until that last post, but I Wiki'ed her...

'Dunne joined the social media platform TikTok in 2020. Initially she posted videos of her gymnastics but later started posting videos of other areas of her life as well. As of July 2021, Dunne had amassed over 4 million subscribers on TikTok and over 1 million followers on Instagram, giving her one of the largest platforms for an NCAA athlete.

On July 1, 2021, the NCAA changed its rule to allow its athletes to earn money from their name, image, and likeness. Dunne was projected to earn more compensation than any other collegiate athlete due to her large social media platform, which was a combined five million followers across both Instagram and TikTok at the time the law change took effect.'

Yeah, she's going to make a nice coin.
This is going to benefit

The QB that would never be drafted the most.
A lot of local money available.
If they can make a couple hundred thousand in college is life changing.
The SEC
HomerJones45 : 7/20/2021 11:42 pm : link
schools will have boosters lined up to pay endorsement money to prospective 5 star attendees. "Son, come to Cotton Weevil State and here is your endorsement contract for a quarter million."
I fear there is going to be dissension

in locker rooms as well as some jealousy as you will have some players raking in cash while others are not.

Hope I am wrong.
This is going to be really bad for lockerrooms at these big schools.

If it’s all advertising dollars, those only go to the guys that play and star. So it’s gonna be a whole lot less team oriented and a whole lot more me oriented.

I was wondering the same thing. Of course the SEC schools are going to perform well here, but I imagine just about any school in a major market and/or with wealthy alumni will be able to compete on dollars. There is no "salary cap" so we could see some odd universities all of a sudden being competitive.
Interesting to see how this impacts

coachability, locker room dynamics, and the classroom.
