replaces Armstead (also if Barkley starts off on PUP). But the Peters signing could mean Ebner isn't coming back (yet).
Barkley's status is concerning. It makes sense to allow him to fully heal and not rush it but as fans we have no idea where he is in that process. The team has been pretty active at the position, not a bad thing necessarily, and won't really hint at a time table for Barkley.
While Weber may only be a replacement-level, practice squad RB...
... it's worth remembering that Jonathan Hilliman played a majority of the offensive snaps in two must-win games in 2019. Setting a viable floor under every position is so important. Weber is a floor-setter. So was Gallman, although we counted on him for much more. And Hilliman was several steps down from Gallman.
The coverage of Barkley's status has been especially vapid.
He's clearly under a gag order. So when asked, "What's the timeline?" or "Will you start camp on PUP", of course he doesn't answer. Then the clickbait headlines start: "Barkley can't rule out PUP." "Barkley unsure of return." Blah, blah, blah.
We know nothing. We will continue to know nothing until the first day of practice.
Why would they even think about putting Barkley on the field now?
Maybe because they believe "football shape" is an actual thing that exists? Since we don't know where Barkley is in his rehab, we have no idea when it might make sense for him to start practicing or whether he might benefit from a limited number of preseason reps.
He came off a strong redshirt freshman year as the presumptive #1 RB. He was limited by nagging leg injuries in 2017, and Dobbins became 1A to Weber's 1B.
There's plenty of footage of Weber from college. My recollection of Weber from the pre-draft process was that he lacked the flash of an Elliott or Dobbins, but had no notable holes in his game. In other words, he fits the profile of a competent backup. If he can contribute on specials, he might be able to compete for a roster spot. Otherwise, he's probably the type of back you carry on the practice squad as insurance against injuries.
Yeah makes sense. I am just thoughtful about why he hasn't stuck with anyone yet at this level.
Probably safe to say Weber is nothing special. On the other hand, the Dallas, KC and GB teams that had him on the practice squad as insurance had some good, healthy backs in front of him. In 2019, for example, Cowboy RBs had a total of 387 carries: 301 for Zeke, 86 for Pollard, and exactly zero for anyone else. Not saying Weber would have done anything with the opportunity had it arisen, just that it never did.

Yes Weber fills Armstead spot, but the Peters signing means somebody needs to be cut.
Not if someone starts off on the PUP.
