Legendary Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden and his family announced on Wednesday that the 91-year old has been diagnosed with a terminal health condition, the Tallahassee Democrat first reported.

"I've always tried to serve God's purpose for my life, on and off the field, and I am prepared for what is to come," Bowden said via a statement. "My wife Ann and our family have been life's great blessing. I am at peace."

The family has asked for privacy as Bowden deals with his health.

I'm an FSU alum and fan, but it's hard to argue that he is on a very short list of greatest college football coaches ever. 14 straight season being ranked in the top 4 will never be duplicated. If you've never seen his biography on the ACC Network, you should try to catch it.

Think Saban is set to tie the 14 straight years in the top 4 this season
Epic coach...

Respect from a closeted PSU fan. Saw JoePa and Bowden face off in 06 at the orange bowl. Bowden coached up some great players. Massive respect and heartfelt prayers for his family.
Not easy to do, they were a powerhouse

look what has happened to them since he left. Coaching is so important in college football
He's a beloved figure

The class he exuded and respect he always gave to opponents, he was something special. Players came to FSU because not only the great program, but because "Saint Bobby" would treat those kids like family. Few have ever done it like him, and he had tremendous success. A couple of FGs staying true, and he would've ended up with at least a couple more rings. But his true legacy is the love he shared for his players and the FSU family. And he made it a family.

One thing I'll say, is Bobby is a great man of faith, and I have no doubt his soul is at peace.
Sad, but what a great life...

...And man mid-80s - mid 90s CFB was awesome, no small part because of Coach Bowden.
One of the greatest coaches

What he did for Marshall university in 1971 after the plane crash as coach for West Virginia was very humanitarian

Sad to hear. An all time great coach. And this is coming from a ND fan who is still pissed the Noles won the national championship in 93.

No, Alabama finished ranked 8th just a few years ago.

Well, Bowden has said he was an early candidate for the Marshall job that went to Rick Tolley, the head coach off the team at the time of the plane crash.
Will always remember

Him doing the sideline interview while his team was running a trick play for a TD in the national championship.

He also recruited my father out of HS personally which is one of my Dad's favorite stories.
It's probably not particularly shocking

that a 91-year-old man is facing a terminal diagnosis. It's tragic, but not shocking.

That said, if it gives the football community a reason to celebrate Coach Bowden one last time while he's here, there's at least a bright side to be had. As far as college football coaches go, you can't find more than a few ever that were better than Bobby.
