I don't know if this is still the plan, but initially the director said two movies were planned - Part 1 and Part 2.
This looks epic, really looking forward to seeing it.
As an aside, I enjoyed the series of prequel novels written by Frank Herbert's son (and another sci-fi author whose name escapes me) as much as the original novels. They go into detail about the rise of the "thinking machines," the Butlerian Jihad, the discovery of the "Holtzmann effect," the history of the bad blood between the great Houses, and much more.

There's also a Dune series planned around the Sisterhood.
I thought the storyline revolving around the Bene Gesserit vs the Honored Matres was among the Best Dune I had ever read. I hope that comes to the big screen as well. Only chance is if this movie is a huge success.

Agreed. I think that's why DV was so adamant that it not go directly to HBO streaming. It needs to make money.
(or should I say one of many mistakes) and try to bring story lines from other books into the orig Dune story. Can't recall ever being so disappointed in a movie and how badly the Fk'd that up. Almost 40 yrs ago now.

So does the director, Denis Villeneuva. He recently said its by far the best movie he's ever made and that its been "meticulously designed to be experienced in a movie theater". Really looking forward to this...
We’ve got one of the best directors of this generation taking on one of the greatest pieces science fiction ever written. All you need to do is look at his track record to know this will be quality.
Ohh and the new Batman is likely going to be awesome. Reeves is a really good director and Pattinson has been on fire. I’m not a big comic book movie person but the Batman is something I cannot wait for.
Or even seen the original movie... this looks like the next big thing. Hell of a cast, beloved source material, dope looking trailer. I’m very excited for this.

Well, I actually agree with you for the most part but if you did watch the first one and then taking into account the advancements in CGI alone this is a remake begging to be done.
The only things I'm going to miss from the first one are Sting and the repetitive battle scene at the end that just shows the same cut of the battle on a loop (/s).

I will say the same thing if it fits. This thread alone is about a remake because very little new quality movies are being written into screenplays. And you added that yet another superhero movie is coming out on Batman. Little to be impressed with.
I remember reading an article in (I think) Fangoria magazine about the Dune movie that was then in production. The article spent a lot of time covering the cost of the movie (with an emphasis on the special effects), which was around $40 million, huge for a movie in that era, noting that the recently released Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was made for about $32 million. Having read the novels, I was really looking forward to seeing this film.
Fast forward to 1984. I was sitting in a theater watching the movie with a few friends. All of us had read at least the first novel. The house was packed. When the movie ended and the lights came up, nobody moved. No one in the theater stood up. Everyone was just kind of looking around as if to say What the hell did we just watch?
You have a very biased, limited, and uninformed view on the industry. Outside of the impacts of Covid on the industry the last 18 months, you couldn’t be more wrong. TBD on how Covid continues to impact the industry but there’s a ton of great projects coming out the second half of this year. In fact, the 90s were riddled with remakes and sequels averaging around 40 per year and that’s often sited as a top decade for movie making.
Lastly, seems like you confuse a business model with creative thinking, another misnomer that you often blend together to make an ill informed point.

There is nothing wrong with remakes and even super hero movies at all. But when those two groups continue to make up an ever increasing portion of releases it is both a function of market changes AND how new ideas and that related investment has dried up.
