i've found the experience so far to be positive all around
UConn4523 : 7/23/2021 12:21 pm : link
my first move was actually during quarantine (Tenet) and I felt safe then and wasn't even vaccinated. Since then i've seen a handful but really started going back these last 2 weeks now that the backlog is finally being released. Its been fairly quiet, very clean, and my theaters allow me to pick seats so I (you) can easily sit away from people.

A24 is an incredible production company. Here's interesting article on them (a bit older) but still relevant since it came out right before shut down. It also shits all over this premise that there aren't new ideas anymore.

Here's another about how their marketing:

"Let me say a bit more about this relationship to audiences. Imagine if Steven Spielberg had a personal email list and multiple social media channels personally connecting him with all the filmgoers who have seen his movies during the last forty or so years. While Spielberg does have an immense brand, the main way he communicates with his audience is through mass media and expensive, metric-resistant platforms such as billboards and television commercials. By contrast, A24 has a direct relationship with a young, active audience and personal relationships with filmmakers who themselves enjoy close connections to their audiences. Both A24 and their collaborators can reach their audience directly at little or no cost to the parent company and the project they’re promoting. These one- or two-degree separations between brand and consumer give A24 reliable and growing influence in the entertainment industry. The studio not only has created an ideal platform for genuine creative storytellers, they have a machine in place to directly share with their customers and the expertise to collaboratively amplify their messages."

But if you're going to remake something, then do something with wonderful source material that wasn't done justice the first time around.

Ummm...so, like...Dune? Holy shit lol...

That was my point. In my mind, Dune is one of the greatest works of fiction ever produced.

Apologies, misunderstanding on my part
Really cool Uconn, thanks for the links

I kinda stumbled into them, just kept noticing their logo on movies I ended up really liking. First it was The Lobster and Swiss Army Man. I just loved that those completely ridiculous absurd stories got to be made. So I starting looking around and realized that Id already really enjoyed a bunch of their movies but never noticed like Locke, A Most Violent Year, The Rover etc. Now when I dont know what I want to watch I just go on different streaming services and search "A24". Its fun going into stuff completely blind.

A good guy or bad guy?

Depends on which side you're on.

So this is a movie where there aren't clear-cut good guys and bad guys?

No there is a clear-cut difference but the Sand Worms at times don't understand that

for Henry Zebrowski from Last Podcast on the Left's take on this. Listened to his deep dive podcast on Dune and it had me lmfao. He loves himself some Dune

So does the director, Denis Villeneuva. He recently said its by far the best movie he's ever made and that its been "meticulously designed to be experienced in a movie theater". Really looking forward to this...

Meant to reply to this yesterday but its IMax for sure for me, HBO Max at home won't do it justice. Saw 2 movies the past week and likely Green Knight next week - so nice to be back in theaters.

Green Knight comes out next week? I am all on board to go watch that on the big screen.
yeah, 7/30 release

trying to free up my schedule and either see it late Thursday or Sunday.
Is it worth seeing the original movie from the 80's?
NYG27 : 7/23/2021 1:30 pm : link
I loved this trailer and definitely want to go see it. I know nothing of the storyline and coming into this with a blank slate.

On that note, would it be worth seeing the original movie from the 80's?

Unless you are a big fan of the books, and even then a lot of us hate that adaptation, I would probably suggest skipping it.

I happen to like the original version, though I acknowledge there are some major issues with he film and understand why many don't like it.
Another version of a movie forty years after the original

This is some petty whining.

Reminds of that hack Brian De Palma being out of ideas and needlessly remaking Scarface.

I don't know if you can follow the plot of Lynch's movie without reading the book.

It might be worth it. It definitely has not aged well and it's not the best movie for sure. But it also might help you with some of the more confusing aspects that come up that are explained in the book.

The book is really an amazing read if you have the time

I think its worth it for the production design and music alone. But reading the book is the best version.
There's also a great audio book
PwndPapi : 7/23/2021 3:01 pm : link
on Audible with some fantastic voice acting if you're not into reading.

There are two versions of the 1984 movie. The original David Lynch version, and the "Alan Smithee" version which was re-cut with a long prologue added featuring pictures and a voice-over narration. I think this second version might have been done for TV. It goes into some of the major themes touched upon in the book, and might be better for people who've never read the books. It's still pretty bad, though.
