That's a big investment in "grit," and the metrics don't paint a pretty picture. He's going to be making north of $5M per year at ages 33 and 34. For a 4th line winger.
I don't dislike the approach. Just not wild about the player.

Goodrow averaged 15 minutes ice time for the best team in hockey. He also led the team in plus-minus.
on Goodrow. Jon Cooper on Goodrow - ( New Window )
All well and good. Coaches are rah-rah about their own players. Though it should not go unnoticed that TB elected not to invest 6 years, a partial NMC, and $5M cap hit in years 3 and 4 in a "good old, fashioned jeep". Because it's dumb.

I don't think you understand how the NHL cap works. Its AAV.
Good row will add more than just the much needed grit on the Rangers. A veteran who has playoff experience and plays the game the right way. Fits in well with the kids.
like Goodrow as a player, but this feels like a Keane/Skrudland type of signing. Overpaid because they need grit and while the Rangers have a number of top players and need all of the cap help they can get in the next few years. I've always been a believer that you get young & cheap guys trying to prove their value on the 3rd/4th lines and when they hit their 2nd contract you have to be disciplined and not overpay.
Lol I almost choked on a pretzel when you posted the first AAV

Averaged 17 and 18 minutes last two years in the playoffs. I think he is exactly the player we need for our 4th line.

And when it was time to pay him, Tampa sent him out the door. That's why they win cups and overpaying for 4th liners.
I don't like this move.

Tampa Bay has a lot of guys they have to pay. They have hit the point where they can't afford to keep the team together.

I like Goodrow. But that is a good point about the Rangers signing third and fourth liners to multi year deals.
