Who had a horrible bicycle accident. He survived, but lost his job coaching at the beginning of the Showtime Lakers. Would have won a bunch of Titles, and Pat Riley probably would have stayed a broadcaster. He died just 3 years ago from complications of that brain injury.
I played golf with him a few times

Horrible and unfortunate way to pass. Seemed like a really good guy from the article and obviously a quality coach. Condolences and best wishes to his family.

Perhaps some day technology will prevent people from texting while in a drivers seat if in fact that was a factor.
RIP Coach

When will people learn to stop messing with their phones while driving?

Texting and driving is so damn reckless but people have become addicted to their phones and addicted to distraction.

It won't stop until people actively call it out. If i'm in a car and I see the driver check their phone to read texts, check a score, or "Just send a quick text," I'll offer to handle it for them or tell them to put it away.

We have too many bystanders and too many people who don't want to create any source of contention. It takes a communal effort to change this behavior and it will literally save lives.
I sent this story to my teens

It's also up to us as parents to set a good example.

Hopefully change will come when the legal consequences reflect the severity of the situation.

Perhaps, treat it like DUI - 6 month loss of license, first offense

I hate when people text and drive, but I hate even more when I see them definitely on social media. In the left lane no less. Multiple times I've seen cars going slow in the left lane and swerving. When I get up passed them they are slouched in their seats with their phone on their steering wheel and are clearly looking at socials. Pisses me off beyond belief.

Hell, I've seen truck drivers doing it. Has to be a massive penalty applied to this stuff. Something that will really F up a persons finances and driving privilege's.
well in this situation

the teen should be charged with vehicular manslaughter. Crazy to make it to 58 and die at the hands of some punk teen like this.
This was horrible to read...
Marianne at PSU : 7/23/2021 9:29 am : link
and also, as a cyclist, it reminds me of how dangerous it is to be on the roads - when it really doesn't need to be. I pray for Knapp's family and for the driver and their family. They will live with having taken a life in a situation that probably could have been prevented.

I am, too. I'm far from perfect with this, but I try my best to treat every green light as if it's red. The consequences of being wrong about someone seeing the light just once are deadly.
Btw he was an enormous man
capone : 7/23/2021 11:25 am : link
This was not some little kid on a bmx this kid must have been really distracted
Terrible…
trueblueinpw : 7/23/2021 11:38 am : link
I don’t think distracted driving will end. There’s tech available today that could easily solve this by disabling certain phone functions but the phone companies won’t let that happen.

One thing that drives me nuts is how my iPhone still brings up reminders when I’m driving. This would also be easy to solve, when Waze or whatever GPS is running just disable reminders. At least make it an option.

The only real hope is that collision avoidance system and self driving cars will mitigate the threat. It always makes me scoff when people decry the perils of self driving cars; as if teenagers and old people and morons and distracted drivers and road ragers are doing such a great job.

Rest In Peace coach. Too bad for the wife and kids. So unnecessary.
Living in PA...
PA Aggie : 7/23/2021 4:45 pm : link
It still amazes me that this dumb state still has no 'hands free' driving law. And further, the dumb people who think that having no law enables them to text. That is illegal here, but it is not enforced. With all of the kids that my kids know, I have never heard of any ever getting in trouble for texting. It goes on at every traffic light, stop sign, even people just cruising down a busy road at 40mph.

When I travel back to family in NJ, you see people on their phones, but it is nothing compared to here in PA, 10% maybe. There are more signs, PSA's, and fines are much higher in NJ. I imagine enforcement may be more frequent too.

As a father, cyclist, similar in age, I feel for his family. That is no way to be taken from this world.
That's just terrible.
Mad Mike : 7/23/2021 4:50 pm : link
Biking around the city, I typically find pedestrians a bigger concern than cars, since in my experience they're much more likely to ignore bikers than drivers are. And on a bike, getting knocked down is pretty scary, even if it's just a person doing the knocking down. But obviously cars can do just an enormous amount of damage. Distracted driving is a really serious problem.
I know a bit about that area
santacruzom : 7/24/2021 2:25 am : link
Quite a bit of wealth, and a lot of country roads where people drive their fancy cars way too fast.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 7/24/2021 4:34 pm : link
It is amazing how often I see people bump into/another bump into other people when walking because their faces are buried in their phones.
Very sad ....
short lease : 7/25/2021 1:06 am : link
I see a lot of cyclists peddle like they are on equal footing with cars - they are not and they should always be on the defense. Out here (California) they seem to think they have the same right of way as drivers - AND THEY DO.

But, they should not prove it at the risk of their lives. I see that ALOT.

I am not saying that was the case in Mr. Knapp's situation. I have no idea of the details and it is tragic that he lost his life. Cyclists have to be careful. Even if they have the same rights as drivers - there are a lot of distracted drivers out there (or drivers who are just morons) who are NOT watching out for them - the cyclists.

RIP Mr. Knapp.
