My japanese wife says protestors are pissed for different reasons.
They are pissed that they have to lock down (early resturant/bar closing- and they love drinking), but the olympics can be held. They feel it is hypocritical. Either open everything or shut down everything, but don't do both (shut down the locals, but alow international olympics).
-First medal ever apparently, a gold, in fencing. Lee Keifer, women's foil.
-Men's 400M IM swimming - Gold and Silver, Chase Kalisz (a Baltimore-area kid who trained with Phelps at one point) and Jay Litherland. I think the two were college teammates at UGA.
softball team had a walk-off win vs. Japan, but it doesn't matter. The two of them will play in the Gold medal game tomorrow, which was already set prior to the game
athlete is allowed to compete in anything. This Russian Olympic Committee Bullshit is ridiculous. Oh, big consequence for decades of cheating, lying and deception by the highest levels of government. Olympics are kind of a joke. No accountability whatsoever.
Hell, Russia was even AWARDED an Olympic Games despite overwhelming evidence that there is an ongoing state-sanctioned drug program. All about the $$$.
Won their first gold medal in history. She's 121 pounds and cleared 280 pounds in her final lift in the clean and jerk. She grew up in extreme poverty and started weightlifting attaching concrete blocks to plastic pipes. That's insane.
Ends with a 0-0 tie vs Australia but qualify for the knockout round. Pathetic.
USA men's sevens rugby blew a 21 point lead to Team GB because their coach is a fuckin moron. He needs to be fired right now. Playing for 9th place. Despicable garbage Fuckstain result. Not prepared. Not in form. No discipline. Too many mistakes. Unfocused. Fire that asshole. It's been a decade. Bye.
Speechless watching the tactics played by USWNT. Such a passive game with terrible passing,no possession and lack of offensive continuity.
Not sure thy have the right head coach going forward. They won't go much further in this tournament playing these type of tactics.
USWNT may have reached their expiration limit and it is time to renew the talent. Happened back when Mia Hamm was there and leaving. The world catches up, like in basketball. I still expect Womens' basketball to be a blowout/cakewalk.
1st time in my life, I could care less about the Olympics. Maybe when track and field starts I'll watch, until then, meh.

It's so easy to watch these amazing athletes perform and forget what an all-encompassing effort it is, mentally and physically, non-stop for essentially an entire lifetime. In sports where you are competing against yourself essentially (I'm sure there is competitive strategy, but opponents can't really strategize to stop you in swimming/track/gymnastics the same way NFL teams can attack on defense) it must be unfathomably difficult to stay at the tippy top.
Something like this makes me really appreciate even more performances like Phelps' in Beijing or Biles in Rio.
gives you a nice glimpse of what the majority of people think athletes should do. Its pretty damn sad. If you aren't near death apparently its inexcusable.
how Djokovic seems to be the biggest star at the Olympics among all the athletes. I'm a guy who has rooted against him for a decade, and there are so many people like me who root for Federer/Nadal who have disrespected him over the years. The lack of media attention he receives in comparison to those two has also been notable.
But it seems like he is finally having his moment as "THE guy" and all his world-class athlete peers seem to be giving him a tremendous amount of respect at these games. The Golden Slam being within reach and his status as likely GOAT seems to have changed the narrative with him.
We'll see if he can get the Gold here but either way, I'm just happy for him that he's getting the kind of love/respect that he deserves after years of being the red-headed stepchild among the Big 3.
athletes have to be both physically and mentally strong. I don't know what to make of the increasing number of athletes who are discussing mental health, but each person has the prerogative to not compete.
Choosing not to compete seems like it may come with side effects that probably can exacerbate the situation though.
Good for Simone. I'm so glad that mental health-in 2021-is no longer stigmatized.
She is not used to making mistakes. It was probably devastating - unexpected and confusing. Maybe she refocus with a couple days off, and jumps back in, if the injury is not lingering. I hope she has the chance.
This coach is a gonna have a hard time getting back into the country if he can’t figure out how to get the best team in the world to play like the best team in the world. It’s been a horrible tourney for the ladies.
And wtf happened to Biles? It’s like the most fucked up Olympics.

There’s a lot of truth to this statement. I understand why athletes like Osaka and Biles are concerned about their standing in terms of their profession. I don’t want to go deeper than surface level with that one because I’m sure there is some deep shit there, especially internationally. But I wanted to see Simone Biles be the GOAT as she was hyped as. A nervous 24 year old isn’t what I expected when I read about the hype.
I know the hype on young kids these days is insane due to social media, but some people like a LeBron James (prob another era but insane hype) end up living up to that potential and shrugging away any pressure. Biles is actually better at what she does than LeBron is what he does, so it’s wild to see her still fail due to pressure.
Mental health is a real thing, 100%. I’ll never disagree with that fact. But it’s definitely a little annoying to see certain athletes claim that as their downfall when we’ve always known pressure was a real thing (Clutch exists).
All I can do is hope Simone is ready to go for the next one. Rooting for her.
about the side effects is that if an athlete is struggling with self-doubt, putting a microscope on their desire to compete seems like it has a chance to spiral out of control, especially with the way social media is.
I also think there needs to be a better understanding of mental health. Things like this opens the door for people to not take the field even if they are physically able to and that will often give the appearance of a lack of desire.
I mean - hitting closer to home, how would a NFL fan react if their QB walked off the field in order to preserve mental health? Sam Darnold was caught on audio about seeing ghosts and it tore away at the idea he was mentally tough.
I just see this going badly in many cases. Partially because of mental health issues being still understood and also because criticism of exiting an event will be looked at as insensitive and bullying.
Yeah, he wasn't expected to get on the podium, let alone win. He just made his two fastest swims at that distance in the semifinal heat and the final. Clutch
I know basically nothing about who is in what race until the race itself, but I assume he is in the 50 meters and has a great chance with that kind of skill in the start.
volleyball team won the first two sets vs. Turkey, but now are in a battle. Up 2 sets to 1, but trailing by 3 in the 4tf set and Turkey has the momentum
Game ended 2-2. The Dutch had a penalty in regular time about 10 minutes from the end but Alyssa Naeher saved it. Then she saved 2 penalties in the shootout
Excellent game. US was lucky to get out of there. Netherlands had the much betterof the play from half on. US got their requisite 4 goals wiped out due to offsides. When it goes to PKs the USWNT has a huge advantage. They just don't miss them.
It's time for an infusion of younger players on this team. Age is definitely catching up with about 6 of their starters.
Ridiculous that 9 goals for the USWNT have been nullified by offsides. That is just plain awareness of where you are on the field.
Netherlands was the better team today.

Love Carli lloyd but She's cooked. No way she should be playing 50 minutes in an elimination rd game.
She gave up a soft goal when the US was leading 2-1. She then saved a penalty in the 80th minute, almost lost it again by doing a Jordan Pickford in stoppage time, then saved the two penalties in the shootout…
US was a perfect 4-4 on penalties, none of them could be saved

Everyone keeps talking about the age of the women’s soccer team as if there’s a bunch of old nags out there looking tired. Some of the players may are older, but not all of them are and every one on this team is an amazing player. At the Olympics this team hasn’t looked tired at all they’ve looked confused and frustrated. Are they offsides because they’re old? Dunn doesn’t look old. Ertz has been terrific. Press and Heath have been working hard. Rapinoe has been a spark and a play maker when she’s on the field. Lynn Williams finally got on yesterday and she was terrific and young all at the same time. And every game the announcers prattle on about how the playing time has been managed and the strength of the team is it’s well of talent. And yet, the Dutch team looked better as the game yesterday wore on. Pretty sure Sam Kerr has played every minute of every game, is she old and tired?
The coaching was horrible against Sweden and it hasn’t gotten any better. That draw against the Matildas was a disgrace and cowardly. Imagine the best team in the world playing for a draw? Pathetic. This coach had his pick of the best players in the world, talent on the field isn’t the issue. I think this team can beat the Canadians but unless Andonovski phones a friend I don’t see a rematch against Sweden going well for our women. And that won’t be because Sweden is more talent or younger on the pitch.
I have to watch all the swimming on mute. What kind of douche bag do you have to be to bring a fucking air horn to a swim meet? The whistlers can go fuck themselves too. I hear those whistlers at some of my kids meets so now I always bring ear plugs. It’s so fucking obnoxious.
Most talented team in the world - at every position except maybe Keeper - and this dingleberry can’t muster a lineup to score a goal against a fucking hockey team. I haven’t ever seen such a shit show coaching mess ever. It’s time for the USWNT to hire an American women to bring this team back to respectable standing.
throughout the tournament:
Not a fan of their coach and his tactics especially against Australia which was shameful.
Age is a factor with several of their key players;
Morgan has lost a step which is so noticeable .
Heath looked diminished in skills from her fabulous WC in 2019. Maybe she is injured. Williams should have played more minutes than Heath.
Dahlkemper was awful in this tournament giving the ball up way too many times.
Rapinoe’s set pieces were way off in this tournament on corner kicks.
Dunn plays out of position because they have no one else to play in the back.
Lloyd is 39 and probably her last tournament.
It’s not the coaches fault when 9 goals are called back due to offsides. Never seen that before it is ridiculous . Thst is on the players and their awareness on the field.
They lacked offensive continuity throughout the tournament.
sometimes it requires a kick in the teeth in order to start a reset.
Happy for what they have accomplished in the last 20 years. The world is catching up and our dominance had to end at some point, like basketball.
I disagree this was a factor. The team looked confused and frustrated, not tired and old. But sure, let’s say age was the problem. Who picked the team? This is the most talented team in the tourney - if not the youngest. The coach was undressed in every game.
way, wayyyyy too much energy expended on fuckin' soccer here
And yes, track is having an awful Olympics save for a few exceptions (Crouser, the 400m women’s hurdles with Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad, the women’s pole vault)
Anyone see the 14 year old Chinese diver dominate?
Absolutely destroyed the competition with two perfect dives (.5 point away with one judge from three perfect dives) and destroyed the Olympic record for most points scored.
It's one of the most impressive/dominating performances I've ever seen and the fact she's 14 is insane. She literally beat out the Chinese defending gold medal champ from 5 years ago. They didn't even send the champ to the Olympics and finished 1/2 in the standings.

That was dramatic from the first hole to the last. Nelly lost a 4 shot lead and then a 3 shot lead, but somehow hung on to win by a shot after her opponents, Mone Inami and Lydia Ko, missed birdie putts on 18 to tie
going into the last day. However, China has 38 gold medals to the USA's 36. So who wins the most gold medals will come down to the final day.
Not that I care about it all that much, but the way I look at "scoring" the Olympics is a 3-2-1 system, i.e. 3 for gold, 2 for silver, 1 for bronze. Golds are worth more but silver and bronze are worth something too.
On that basis, without doing the exact math, it's not even close (in the USA's favor).

I just see this going badly in many cases. Partially because of mental health issues being still understood and also because criticism of exiting an event will be looked at as insensitive and bullying.
I was surprised the men didn't field a 3x3 team

Yeah, he wasn't expected to get on the podium, let alone win. He just made his two fastest swims at that distance in the semifinal heat and the final. Clutch
Quote:
That was a VERY close race
He got a great start and held the lead throughout.
Just about held it. He won by 6 hundredths of a second. Great swim
Finke's last 50 was incredible. And just the concept of 800 meters freestyle leaves me exhausted. That's a long way to race in a pool.

Not sure I want to walk that far!
Great news. One champion retires, another is crowned.
That's great. She's been the most consistent of all the gymnasts so far. I bet she'll win gold in the bars later in the week.

Congratulations! That gold medal stays in American hands

The Brazilian gymnast, Rebeca Andrade, was going to win but she stepped out of bounds twice on the floor and finished second
Excellent game. US was lucky to get out of there. Netherlands had the much betterof the play from half on. US got their requisite 4 goals wiped out due to offsides. When it goes to PKs the USWNT has a huge advantage. They just don't miss them.
Ridiculous that 9 goals for the USWNT have been nullified by offsides. That is just plain awareness of where you are on the field.
Netherlands was the better team today.

Love Carli lloyd but She's cooked. No way she should be playing 50 minutes in an elimination rd game.
US was a perfect 4-4 on penalties, none of them could be saved

The coaching was horrible against Sweden and it hasn’t gotten any better. That draw against the Matildas was a disgrace and cowardly. Imagine the best team in the world playing for a draw? Pathetic. This coach had his pick of the best players in the world, talent on the field isn’t the issue. I think this team can beat the Canadians but unless Andonovski phones a friend I don’t see a rematch against Sweden going well for our women. And that won’t be because Sweden is more talent or younger on the pitch.
Not a fan of their coach and his tactics especially against Australia which was shameful.
Age is a factor with several of their key players;
Happy for what they have accomplished in the last 20 years. The world is catching up and our dominance had to end at some point, like basketball.
Winner has a easy road to the medals. Loser will have to win out.
Could be wrong. We'll see in a minute.
So were they inspired by Manfred's monstrosity, or vice versa?
Kind of surprised she is back.
The ToddFather doesn't lay down any stinkin' bunts! He just strikes out looking at two pitches right down the pipe.

USA goes 1-2
Northern NJ's own Sydney McGlaughlin wins gold.

From Union Catholic, sort of Central. Rutgers couldn't keep her I guess.
They will go without a medal for a 4th straight Games

Second baton handoff took forever.
It's one of the most impressive/dominating performances I've ever seen and the fact she's 14 is insane. She literally beat out the Chinese defending gold medal champ from 5 years ago. They didn't even send the champ to the Olympics and finished 1/2 in the standings.

24 out of 35 perfect dives

Absolutely destroyed the competition with two perfect dives (.5 point away with one judge from three perfect dives) and destroyed the Olympic record for most points scored.

That was dramatic from the first hole to the last. Nelly lost a 4 shot lead and then a 3 shot lead, but somehow hung on to win by a shot after her opponents, Mone Inami and Lydia Ko, missed birdie putts on 18 to tie
