With fans not being allowed to attend almost all of the summer activities, these are also the restrictions placed on the media.
This helps to explain why we were seeing so little posted during the OTAs:
*Videotaping and photographing will be limited to the stretching and individual portion of practice.
*Do not report on offensive, defensive or special teams strategy.
*This includes describing formations, personnel groups, deployment of personnel, starting lineups, players working in first-team, second-team or third-team, or non-conventional plays.
*Do not quote, paraphrase or report the comments made by coaches or players during a practice session.
*No reporting during the open portion of practice. This includes social media updates (i.e. tweeting), blogging, radio updates or phone interviews.
Fine with me
I'd rather win games than have a live feed via Twitter during training camp.

That works for 1 game, maybe. I understand the concept, but still think it is kind of silly.

Every game counts in an NFL season - so that 1 game could be the difference.

If they're working on a number of creative concepts, there's no guarantee that they roll them all out in one game. And there's no guarantee that they roll them out in the first game.
Training camp as a spectacle has always been a questionable concept. Let the team get ready for the season with as few distractions as possible.

Ok, I agree there. As a fan, I just like the "news." Long 5 or 6 weeks leading up to the season.
Summer is hard enough for Giants news.
We'll be over MetLife in two minutes, Mr. Raanan.
Summer is hard enough for Giants news.
Be careful using JJ - I immediately thought of Jerry Jones!
I think the NFL is going in the wrong direction on this. If you want to get the fans excited you have to have interesting tidbits before the real games start. how else are we going to get through the summer wondering if this is Jonas Seawrights All Pro season?
As Eric pointed out yesterday, the fan interest is at an all time low and this will probably drive it lower imo. Football was the one sport that had somewhat of a year round interest. Moves like this gives fans a reason to take on other interests.
It also lets Gay Talese Leornard focus on Daniel Jones's macaroni. Win/win.

My fault :)
It's like when people used to call LaDainian Tomlinson "LT".
There's only one LT and JJ.

yep...LDT, not LT.
In other news..Jerry Jones hires Giants' beat reporters as "consultants".
I'll bet you a case of wine that this has nothing to do with revenue.
A sure sign of the interest is the Gen X and Gen Z interest in fantasy football -- what is happening is that fans are developing player loyalty over team loyalty -- often there is both team and player loyalty on different teams now - those seem to me to be the salient shifts that are taking place and I don't see it letting down
there is still big- big money being passed on football -- and it has to be coming from somewhere
I think managing a team fan site may be seeing a shift downward in interest because of the rising interest in fantasy - and the players as individuals and stat wise
I guarantee you that when the Giants start producing team stats of interest to fantasy players there will be a greater interest in them, and this site, as stat munchers seek more info.

Gidie, with all due respect, if you now make a claim against the "fantasy football" mindset after that post, you're not even trying to take yourself seriously.
There are a lot of questions about the Giants going into this season. Many of which have been presumably addressed (fingers crosse), and a few have not.
But I'm not sure the team has any obligation to answer our remaining questions this summer. I'd prefer they answer questions against opponents.
All of you who are chirping about not having access to training camp, get over it. Training camp was never for you.
If this has a negative effect on Eric, I'd have been happy to donate more in future campaigns. But in absence of that, I can accept a bit of suspense and surprise when the season begins.
Training camp is not for fans. I'm not sure why that's confusing.

I’ve most always felt that way. I only pay attention to the injury list (other than normal tweaks and soreness. Otherwise, I look forward to watching the players trying to make the final 53 during preseason games.
In fact, I couldn’t have cared less about watching the players run around in shells, etc. when in Albany. I only went there to hobnob with BBIers, nothing more.
From the fan/media perspective camp is about:
Who got hurt and how bad
Who looks good
Who doesn't
Of those three things, only the first one means anything tangible.
Every year there are training camp and pre-season "stars" who vanish in real games. So who looks good doesn't mean much.
Similarly, great players don't always look great until it's real games. No one knew rookie OBJ was going to become OBJ until he played in real games because he was always dinged up in camp.
So I don't really see how these media restrictions change much.
Pat Leonard was able to uncover DJ likes his steak medium instead of medium-rare and is a bit indifferent on mac n cheese as a side with steak...

Until this offseason, reporters would tweet from the sidelines during practice all kinds of things, sometimes even mentioning trick plays or unusual formations. I know this because I would avidly pay attention to these tweets for front page updates. That stopped during OTAs this offseason. I thought the reporters were slacking off but they obviously were told to stop doing this.
This is a major change from the perspective of fan interest. We won't be getting much info out of camp this year other than "so and so dropped the ball".
- Evan Engram cannot be covered
- Nobody can block Lorenzo Carter
How'd all that work out?
:-)
We won two of those trophies before the internet existed for public use, a third before social media became as pervasive as it is, and the fourth on the back of one of the greatest seasons any Giants QB has ever had.
Given that we can't go back to the social media landscape of the first three trophies and that it might be asking a bit much to expect DJ to match Eli's 2011 campaign, maybe it makes sense to adjust to the world we actually do live in.
