That's a jerky thing to write. This is both important and long freaking overdue and if you don't get it just keep it to yourself please.
No. It's not important. It's trivial and meaningless in the grand scheme of things. It's only important to those that continue to want to keep Americans divided. We are one nation. We are one people. We should never hyphenate or segregate ourselves in any way. There is one American Flag, One American National Anthem, there is one America. If you believe differently, you are a useful idiot to those that wish to keep us divided.
Even the owner didn't get what he really wanted (Black Knights) so everyone lost and wound up settling for a name with an adjective in it, which is a great way to sound like a minor league team.
Fans often have the right answer but then owners step in and show everyone who's an idio...er boss.
Having said that, why not go back to the Cleveland Spiders? At least there’s history there. Not to mention they could probably make a shit ton of money on retro merchandise along with the new stuff they’d be making. Seems like a missed opportunity.
Just shorten it to "Cleveland Rocks" lime the old Presidents of the USA song they used on the Drew Carey show. Original, unique, rolls off the tongue, plenty of opportunity to design a logo that incorporates music and stone. Really big whiff with "guardians".
Seriously, who gives an eff? Cleveland did a cost/benefit analysis and it pointed to a re-brand was in their best interest, end of story. Happy Friday.

in a few years most people will look back and laugh at how tenaciously people clung to the old name.

Not in the fucking least. You had an actual native American family who designed the logo for the Washington Redskins lose money because of this insane 'wokeness'. The vast majority of native Americans couldn't care less. And the word Indian is not a pejorative, now is it? Why would any single entity want to name themselves something that was purposefully derogatory towards a particular culture? In fact, the argument can be made that calling themselves the Indians was being inclusive to Indians. It's pathetic pandering.

Unfortunately today the direction is to call a radically different view un-American and silence it.

Indian is actually a pejorative term, often used to separate if not dehumanize Natives. Yes they use the term themselves, but I guarantee they'd all rather just be called by their tribal name.
Aa far as why would an entity purposefully name themselves that, well in the early 1900s it wasn't seen as derogatory, but feelings have changed in the last 100+ years. There's also been protests about it since the 70s, it's not like this is a contemporary issue to "woke culture" there's just enough impetus now to actually do something about it
Will the name change materially affect natives? No probability not. There's a lot of issues many tribes face, especially so in this era of covid, but it's a step in denormalizing stereotypes, derogatory names, and seeing natives as something on par with amimals and sock colors.

continues to wither on the vine as all these asinine changes are made to please every minority/gender under the sun. Is it ok to ask who Rocky Colavito played for?
to think of a team that got it right with a name change.
About the only one I can think of is Syracuse, who went from the Saltine Warriors to the Orange. At least they got an iconic mascot out of it.
I guess the Rays, Stars and Ducks losing the Devil, North and Mighty part isn't too bad either
I kind of preferred Mighty Ducks. I also preferred North Stars.
I think Supersonics got it right moving to Thunder (though I do miss the Supersonics colors and court paint. I also think Red Storm works better than Redmen. Not great, but better.
the Hornets went back. The Bobcats would be like Washington naming themselves the Daniel-sans.
Yep. The Bobcats were the worst.
I remember when they first named it the Bobcats, they talked about how plentiful the animals are in the area. Maybe if you go up to the mountains 3 hours away. Why not just call then the Beaches then - just as close.
It was Bob Johnson being an egomaniac from Day 1 and nobody called him on it from a media standpoint.

Of the changing of these names. I think we can all agree that native Americans got a pretty raw deal, if this upsets just one of them let’s try to be compassionate. I am the farthest thing from woke but to quote Chris rock “ain’t no one had it as hard as the Native American”.
The area in and near Cleveland did stand "Guard" for the colonists in Ohio, Detroit, Western New York and Pennsylvania from Pontiacs War, the French and Indian Wars, the Revolution, the War of 1812 and a launch point in the "wars" to safeguard from the Erie Canal to Chicago.
The Hurons, the Delaware, the French and the Brits all were cleared out from 1730 to 1830.
Cleveland guarded the Great Lakes. Oliver Hazard Perry's fleet home Port was Cleveland in our attempt to drive the Brits out of the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence River Valley.
Cleveland was a Guardian for the new Republic. We all know how vital the Great Lakes,Ohio River and Mississippi were to the growth of our nation. During that 130 year period we fought several entrenched forces and we did it from the area from the Sandusky River to Youngstown.
So yeah...as a through back name...the "Guardians"does begin to re claims Clevelands original role in the formation of the USA.

It bucks the status quo where casual racism against natives is ok. Those who are upset (dare I say triggered) by the change are of the mindset "this is the way it's always been, so this how it always should be." When something challenges that and pushes them out of their comfort zone, and change is an uncomfortable thing, they lash out.

Both good points. I am fine with some of the name changes. I will be upset if they change the NY Giants because it offends smaller people.
I imagine they did research in Cleveland and perhaps fan surveys. This is a name that actually has meaning to the people of Cleveland and is rooted to the history of the city. How is that less stupid than naming a team after a random animal that really has nothing to do with the region?

Yeah, I agree. Rockers would have been the best choice
In fairness, most native American alliances of that period were paid for by the French or the Brits.
Also in fairness, the post 1812 wars against Indian tribes in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois ( much less Tennessee and Kentucky) were vicious.
Just settling Indiana involved breaking over 39 different treaties by bloodshed before it was accepted for statehood.
Both Harrisons, Mad Anthony Wayne, Van Buren, Polk, Tyler and Andrew Jackson all were front line leaders or treacherous in their dealings on the frontier in the Ohio and upper Midwest
Total aside, but have an uncle who lives in Solon, OH, a suburb of Cleveland; I've been to Cleveland probably 10 plus times in my life. It's a great city, despite the perception of it being a dump.

Are you serious? A discussion about a sports team's name change triggers you so bad you want someone to "expire"?
WTF is wrong with you?
RE: When do the NJ Devils or California Angels change?
Was Anaheim when they won it all in 02. Then they did the stupid Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim thing before just going to Los Angeles Angels, despite LA & Anaheim being nowhere near one another.
On the one hand, I think the new name is pretty silly.
And I think it’s a fine new name. Kinda lays out syllable-wise like Indians and is something local so I’m for it. Changing team teams always feels odd for a few months, but it’s settles in soon enough. Better than trading the Bullets for the Wiz at any rate!
would a sport from another franchise in another sport have any ability to block another team in a different sport from using a name? Like would GSW have to agree to it for a baseball team to call themselves the Warriors? Just no idea how it’s works.

I still occasionally slip up and call them the Bullets. Same with Oilers & Texans.
In terms of the Rocks or Rockers as potential choices
A lot of the data on population below the poverty line over the last 18 months is very skewed, but the Census Bureau did report in 2020 Cleveland had the highest percentage.
There’s also an argument that Cleveland, outside of the top 50, isn’t a big city.
are stupid. Eventually it's just what they are called and no really thinks about it.
Are there a lot of trolleys in Los Angeles being dodged? How's that Jazz out in Salt Lake City? GOtta watch out for those Tigers down on 8 Mile. Angels? Giants? Jets? Heat, Magic, Red/White Sox, Reds, Wizards, Packers, Cardinals, etc.
Our country has a history of racist imagery against Native Americans, blacks, Asians, and many other ethnicities. The Indians got rid of Chief Wahoo and then decided to get rid of the name altogether.
Replaced the "In" in their name with "Guar", how clever. Does this also mean Chief Wahoo will be replaced with this guy
On a different site I visit they had the same sort of comment. But, they also suggested that on bat day, the bats the give out were Groot shaped which might be cool.
Or Steamers
I guess Spiders were too scary?

We will be one people one day, but certainly not now. This change is a step towards your goal. Can you not see that?
Not in the fucking least. You had an actual native American family who designed the logo for the Washington Redskins lose money because of this insane 'wokeness'. The vast majority of native Americans couldn't care less. And the word Indian is not a pejorative, now is it? Why would any single entity want to name themselves something that was purposefully derogatory towards a particular culture? In fact, the argument can be made that calling themselves the Indians was being inclusive to Indians. It's pathetic pandering.

Are you really "thinking"? As long as you continue to accept division and separatism, for any reason, you'll have division and separatism.
I mean. c'mon now. Plenty of people think the name changes are unnecessary, and it's not hard to understand why. But absurd comments like this really make you look silly.

No in a few years I'll still be laughing at just how awful the new (then current) name is.

Or NYFG rebranding as the NY Marauders. Or Maracas. Some slick branding opportunities there. Mariaci band starts to play after each TD.

Yeah that's a fail.
But in the end, it's their franchise. Most sports franchise names are pretty crappy.

Why don’t you just come out and say the racist shit you want to say instead of being such a fucking coward.
I thought it was cool. Looked like a guy you don't want to screw around with.

I will be upset if they change the NY Giants because it offends smaller people.
probably because they are fake characters from a fictional book?

So, in part they’re switching sides? From the Indians to the protectors from the Indians?
The better.
The one thing to take from that is that we are all one with our dentistry
They should sell the rights to their names and logos to corporations and use it to raise additional revenue. Like they do with stadium names.
Or like we did in Little League.

Just shorten it to "Cleveland Rocks" lime the old Presidents of the USA song they used on the Drew Carey show. Original, unique, rolls off the tongue, plenty of opportunity to design a logo that incorporates music and stone. Really big whiff with "guardians".
Yeah, I agree. Rockers would have been the best choice

Was Anaheim when they won it all in 02. Then they did the stupid Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim thing before just going to Los Angeles Angels, despite LA & Anaheim being nowhere near one another.
Haha, not to mention the one team named after female horses and the other honoring men of the cloth.

I still occasionally slip up and call them the Bullets. Same with Oilers & Texans.
I agree that the Spiders would have been the best choice and that the Guardians is pretty corny, but whatever.
False. It's Detroit and it's not close.
There’s also an argument that Cleveland, outside of the top 50, isn’t a big city.
- The name has the same ending "-ians" and they are using a similar font so that the uniform will look similar.
- The "wings" off the G Logo are similar to the wings off the helmet of one of the Guardian statues
- the G Logo look like two fingers gripping a baseball.
On a different site I visit they had the same sort of comment. But, they also suggested that on bat day, the bats the give out were Groot shaped which might be cool.
