NFT: Best Dessert Thread

Grey Pilgrim : 7/23/2021 5:20 pm
I posted this in the Drake’s vs. Hostess thread. Thought this deserved it's own.

What was the best dessert you ever ate?

For me it was when I was in Paris where I had a pistachio eclair. It was so good my head basically exploded after eating it.

Whats yours?
I'm Italian.

I went to Italy and France for my honeymoon. The food in France was so much better than Italy. We also ate at some absolutely amazing places.

As far as desserts go, as I have gotten older I barely eat sweets so it is hard to me to answer without really thinking about it.
Tough to narrow down one,

but the Cheesecake at Il Mulino in NYC is the best cheesecake I've ever had.
I don't know if the best

But, my favorite is a dessert from Serendipity that was not on the regular menu, which my wife has replicated for me before. It was called Mmmmm! It's basically a 3 scoop banana split with peanut butter and chocolate syrup. I love peanut butter.

That brings me to my next favorite. a chocolate cake with peanut butter butter cream frosting and peanut butter filling from a bakery in Red Hook called Baked. The cake is the Whoopsie Daisy. It's expensive, so we haven't ordered it in some time. But, they get the chocolate cake perfect and the peanut butter filling is excellent chilled or room temp.

The last is clearly not the best, but another favorite of mine. I eat far less cakes and sweets now. But, at a party if they have a Carvel ice cream cake, I can't turn it down.

Strawberry/Rhubarb cinnamon topping crunch Cobbler with a scoop of homemade French vanilla ice cream.

In a restaurant, it was an oldie but really goodie: Banana Fosters made at the table that I got at a really nice steakhouse called Al Biernat's. They offered it only for a short time in December 2 years ago. It was amazing
A good cannoli,

The pasticciotto

in the southern region of Puglia is off the charts good. It’s a pastry with a delicious custard or creme filling. Yum!

Has anyone else tried it?

my idea of dessert is a second, but smaller, steak.

or occasionally an Irish coffee.
With my wife's help, I'll list three

from restaurants. As Monty said, bananas Foster at Brennen's, a bread pudding from Union Station in Ogden, UT and a chocolate mousse from Tarbell's in Phoenix. At home, I have a bunch of favorites- Contessa's Outrageous Brownies, Brownie Tart and Rugelach, buttermilk panna cotta, Kelsey Nixon's fruit pizza, lemon curd, macerated strawberries with balsamic, and my wife's NY cheesecake.
yeah -- my go to dessert is Creme Brulee

then there's chocolate mousse, and then panna cotta, there also a new gluten-free/dairy free coconut strawberry cheesecake that I really like
My Mom's Zuppa Inglese.
Klaatu : 7/24/2021 9:51 am : link
She'd make it every Christmas (which is also my birthday). The recipe below looks to be pretty close to what she'd make, although I can't vouch for some of the ingredients (like what kind of liqueur she used), or the exact measurements. My Mom's recipes called for things like "a glass of milk," or "just enough flour," lol.

Zuppa inglese (Italian Trifle) - ( New Window )
I understand I’m pretty simple

but I dunno how there is anything better than the Reese’s pieces sundae I used to get at Friendly’s.

Vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, peanut butter sauce, whipped cream, Reese’s pieces sprinkled in and a cherry on top.

+1 maybe even an infused cigar (Drew Estate Latte) on rare occasions.
My Grandmother..
FatMan in Charlotte : 7/24/2021 2:03 pm : link
used to make a grape pie. She'd take fresh grapes from the vine, skin them, cook them down in sugar and use it as the filling. I've not had anything close to it since she passed.

My Italian grandmother did the same thing! Though she got her grapes from a street cart... I've never seen grape pie anywhere else. I loved the grape filling, but the thick crunchy dough crust was absolute heaven. Thinking about this, I remember the smell of those pies cooling on her kitchen table...

I didn't want to list too many things, but a white cake with chocolate frosting is one of my faves.

There's an excellent Greek Festival every year in Charlotte. We get baklava to take home, but I can't pass up delicious, freshly made Loukamades when we're walking around the festival
