Because I like him as a player, but how he can’t play over these backcourt guys on France is insane to me. I get Fournier but these other guards on France look terrible especially the backup pg that came in.
yeah, Gobert is good, but their best scorer is Fournier? You can’t beat them? And let’s not pretend this is the only team they lost to. In pre-Olympic games they lost to Nigeria and Australia, with top players such as Gabe Vincent and Patty Mills. I have really waned on my interest in the NBA, as the overall quality of play has diminished, but this is quite bad.
there's more talent all over the globe than ever before and the NBA has never been more concentrated with athleticism and talent in the history of the sport.
This isn't 1992 where half the countries were in awe just to see NBA players up close.
FIBA rules are slightly different and it takes time to gel. Even NBA "super teams" had rocky starts as they learned to play together.
It certainly hasn't been a great showing for Team USA thus far, and perhaps the flame out early and there is a hard look at the roster construction. But the tournament is far from over.
1992 you had Robinson, Ewing, Barkley, Malone at C and PF.
This year? Big guys are Bam Adebayo and Javele McGee. Are you kidding me? The rest of the world may have improved, but this team is not good. Other guards in the past were a lot more complete players as well. You think a Jordan or a Kobe or an LBJ is letting a Fournier go off like that?
The team has lost to Nigeria, Australia, and France. At one point do you accept the team is not very good?

This plus the US team practices together much less than most international squads. Which makes unfamiliarity with international rules worse.
We don’t take it that seriously. Which I’m fine with. Losing to professional teams from eastern block countries when only allowed to field college players was a national pride thing. Now? Not so much.
Pop is a great coach, hall of fame coach but he is such an ass
Where is this coming from?? Anyone I've ever talked to that is associated with the NBA talks about how Pop is one of the best people in the game. On top of that, Will Sevening and Brandon Bowman, the Spurs athletic trainers say that Pop is incredible to work with.

I think we all know where it's coming from. Sad.
1992 was the best team ever compiled in the world. Period.,
It is unlikely any team will ever come close to that team's talent. And they practiced and played to win.
This team is both comprised of a lot of 2nd tier players and they have barely played together. Plus, there are much better pros for a lot of other countries now.
I know Holliday led the US in scoring, but maybe when guys just get off the plane, you don't play them as much.
i am sure he is very well liked within the spurs..
Huh?? He's well liked across the NBA.
I've never asked anyone who they think is the best guy in the NBA, and yet Pop has been brought up UNSOLICITED as a great guy and one of the most respected around the league.
If people are mentioning something like that without it even being the topic of conversation, you can be pretty sure the guy is really respected. And that wasn't from people on the Spurs.
Since you made the comment - perhaps you have some specific example instead of just sounding like a fan who is disgruntled for some fucking reason.
and so much off the court as well. Giving the interviews the way he does shouldn't define him as a person. It’s the least important part of his resume.

Yes, there’s a lot of second tier players. But are there even any first tier US big men? Valanciunas, Jokic, Gobert, Ayton, Embiid, Capela all from other countries. Outside of Towns, not much even there as options.
Just a bunch of ISO scorers with average overall defense. It’s a really poorly built roster. They should still beat everyone else but I’m not surprised they’re struggling to find the right chemistry without a great pure PG setting it up.

Javale McGee is a Covid replacement and he's there because he has a very specific skill set that is great for FIBA rules, most notably as a rim clearer since there is no goaltending of defensive three seconds. He isn't going to play much but can be useful in certain situations, and he doesn't need the ball or heavy minutes.
LeBron, Curry, Kawhi, AD, Harden, CP3, Paul George, and Klay are sitting out the Olympics for various reasons but are top players in the sport. Their absence speaks to the quality of this roster relative to available talent, but it is not an indication of waning NBA talent as you said in your original post.
The 1992 Dream Team had all of the very best players in the NBA play for that team and they got to play against a world that was 30 years behind where they are now in basketball talent.
And yet, that all-time great team across any sport still lost in a scrimmage to a bunch of college kids.
they can’t find a better big man than him, who is not a liability in other aspects of the game? I can’t imagine how deep into the league the NBA would have gotten in the 92 dream team to get to a player like Javele McGee. And again, other than a Towns, what options passed them up that would have helped up front? All the players mentioned are smaller guys. It has been a pathetic showing thus far for them.
Davis and Towns are about the only good US big men
I just want to pile on. There can only be one reason to think that. Dude is almost universally revered as a decent human being.
I seem to recall Pop did have a reputation as an ass with the press back in the day. He would act a lot like Belichick in press conferences. Then Pop began winning, and the media really lightened up on him.
Pop has been winning since he practically came in the league. I think his first seasonon was one where The Admiral got injured early & SA tanked & somehow got Duncan first overall.

Great coach with SA. Might be a great guy, but I do not like his attitude. A touch too arrogant for me. But of course all I every got was NY sports coverage which may be slanted.

Correct. He’s been winning for 25+ years. That said, he did deal with some initial criticism. Traded Rodman for Perdue as Spurs GM, and fired the head coach and he became head coach. He received a lot of criticism for that, and he got some criticism for the way he was in press conferences. He quickly shut up any critics by winning after that initial season.
I don’t care how he answers/non-answers in press conferences. I’m just saying I think that’s where he got any reputation as an ass from

Actually, we don’t all know. Can someone share for us casual NBA fans?
Pathetic. I know it isn't 1992, but come on...
France has arguably the best defensive player in the world, and other NBA-level talent as well. They aren't push overs.
I want to see the US win, and they need to play better. I expect them to get out of group play and those few games to help sharpen them further.
Fixed it for you. 😘
