I just came across this, but you could end up with a ticket if *any* part of your license plate is covered in NY or NJ. A clear money grab, but could happen to anyone. Link - ( New Window )
But what a bullshit rule. What is covered, the words New York at the bottom? No other state would dare having as ugly a license plate as NY. If someone needs to see New York at the bottom then they shouldn't be handing out tickets in the first place.
Some local craphole town in the Catskills and it was 160 bucks. They said if it covers “the empire state” at all it’s a violation. It was the dealers rim around the plate.

I'm assuming the cops had nothing better to do/looking to meet quotas. That's an absurd law.
I would purchase the URL for the police officer and the town. Will spend 10x the cost of the ticket developing a website to make both wish it never happened. Will put content on there that is completely truthful. Then they can buy the sites at an inflated value to take them down.

I'm pretty sure you would generate a lot of attention for yourself. You will end up like the guy in the Shawshank Redemption.
Don't know if they issued tickets, but you couldn't get an inspection sticker. So before each inspection, I would remove mine (Giants in the rear, Red Sox in the front). As soon as I had the new sticker, I'd re-install them. Once a year PITA.
Don't know what the rule is in NH, but I haven't had any hassles with inspections here.

You seriously think the cops are the ones that make laws?

One of the people in that video had "New York" visible on top. "Empire State" was blacked out, which is more ridiculous.
I am honestly not sure if my plate cover obscures anything. I'll have to check.
1) At least in the 2 cases in the video, there is no way it was cops issuing these tickets. There were parked cars. It was parking officers who issued the tickets. Not any better, but still...
2) NJ has a proposed bill that would exempt dealer plate covers. I doubt that passes though, as it would be most of the covers.
3) In my neighborhood there are always parking officers walking around on Sundays, when there are no meters to enforce. They check the registration and inspection stickers on each windshield all day long. While, either expired is technically correct, that seems like a bullshit practice to me.
But nys sucks ass. That's just all absurd money grab. I'm getting increasingly tired of living here. But where would I go? The rest of the country kind of sucks too.

States need money for various programs (medical care, pensions, benefits, salaries) and, especially in NJ and NY they’ve pretty much maxed out income tax and sales tax so they move to these other sources of revenue.
Somewhat counter intuitively, I’ve read that covid resulted in many states increasing their tax revenues. Anyway…

The shit works though. Someone owed me a lot of money. Bought the domain for his first and last name. Two months later I sold him the domain and its very truthful contents for exactly what I was owed.
and he only had it down there for a couple days, because he usually keeps it in my driveway (not something I’m happy about but he doesn’t need it in the city usually).
Also had a dealer holder on it.
I still am holding on to my old white and blue plates so I suppose I’m always good.

...me and my 2 best friends all studied to become cops. On my way to take a test for Moonachie NJ PD, I passed a Moonachie cop who had a guy my age pulled over and was giving him a ticket as I drove by.
I made a u-turn and went home. I wanted to 'serve and protect', not ruin peoples days.
What kind of pricks give out tickets for license plate frames?
While happy with my career choices, worth pointing out is that those 2 best friends retired long ago from their respective police jobs, I'm still a working stiff.
Should have some blame in this. Start raising hell with them for putting the plate cover on and they will, in turn, raise hell with lawmakers over it. That's a large donation segment to piss off

So you made a life decision on what you had planned and studied for based on a passing incident you knew no details about?

YUP. :)
I don't regret it - both buds, one a NYPD detective, the other a Tom's River cop - both told me I made the right move in hindsight. Both retired at the earliest possible date. The detective in particular said the stress of that job was never worth it.

How do you arrive at the conclusion SF stated the cops "Make the laws" from his post?
...and I respect the work that you folks do, but if you've ever given a person a ticket for a dealer plastic plate frame - for no other reason? That's just low.
Maybe the right thing to do is to get a screwdriver and remove it for the driver on the spot rather than wreck their day.
I once got pulled over by a cop. He walked PAST my window, tapped on my headlight with his flashlight - I didn't even realize it was out, but tapping on it turned it on. He walked up to me, said - get that fixed! - and walked back to his car.
is that there was a misapplication of the law. The spirit of the law is to prevent people from covering up important identifying information on the plates, but the letter of the law was written too broadly. Unfortunately, people can end up being unfairly penalized due poorly written laws.
Aside from that, I personally find those dealer frames to be obnoxious to look at. I don't really understand why so many people choose to not have them immediately removed or replaced after buying a new car. A car looks so much nicer when you're not driving around with an advertisement for Holman Auto Group or Burns Hyundai on your front and rear bumpers.

Because a license plate holder has absolutely zero significance to the look of the car? I’ve never once looked at a new car and thought “damn, that would be a sweet ride if not for the dealer plate frames!”. Nobody even notices them.
If you are that bothered by them, maybe you’re the issue instead of those that don’t give a shit?
Unbelievable

North Carolina?

That was the first state that came to mind, tbh.
