NFT: Sunday Mets Baseball / Gm 3 vs Jays / Stripling vs Rich Hill

allstarjim : 7/25/2021 11:33 am
Rich Hill's Mets debut vs a familiar foe.

Mets lineup:

Nimmo CF
Conforto RF
Alonso 1B
Smith LF
J.D. Davis 3B
Villar SS
Nido C
Guillorme 2B
Hill P

Still no McNeil, who hasn't played since Wednesday. McNeil's "fatigue" makes me concerned with deGrom's "forearm tightness".

Also concerning is that deGrom ostensibly had some pretty good time off through the All Star break. Hard to believe, but Jake last pitched July 7th. That's 18 days ago.

Need both of these guys healthy to just get to the postseason.

I loved watching this man play ball when he was concentrating on hitting line drives to all fields. Looks confused now and too concerned with hitting home runs. I think the Mets may be main him the main or a main piece in a package for pitching that they need badly. So sad that they released Matz.

Hoping for a good Carrasco start today in Syracuse. Dont care about his results but we need him to rack up some innings.

With the deGrom and McNeil news today, a good Carrasco start (and Hill) would go a long way to getting a lot of our issues resolved.

They didnt release Matz. They traded him for Reid Foley, Y Diaz, and a third piece that turned into Kahlil Lee. Considering all three of those players have already contributed this year and Lee is a top 10 Mets prospect, I think that has to be one of the better trades the Mets have made in recent memory.
Matz also has a salary over $5 million
KDavies : 7/25/2021 12:06 pm : link
Jay’s needed the SP. Mets could go deGrom, Stroman, Walker, Peterson, and then have Thor/Carrasco coming back (though took way longer). Megill has come on. Hill is better than Matz at half the price

To be honest, I think they are being super careful. Back in the day, he would have pitched through it

I also think using cell phones and a mouse adds to this rash of injuries. These guys are on the phone ten hours a day. I’ve gotten tendinitis in my upper arm from using a computer during the last year when I have been remote. Body is just not meant to be on these devices. I would be willing to bet neck disc injuries will be way higher after a few more decades of electronic culture

He's been hot, though, and I think he's done a good job getting back to that. .316 BA in July and has an active 10 game hit streak going.
I think Matz was traded to clear cap space for Bauer
Vanzetti : 7/25/2021 1:40 pm : link
As Z says, Mets got a decent return in terms of guys contributing this year.

But given the Mets dearth of starting pitching, they obviously would have been better off with Matz THIS YEAR.

But Mets were probably not going to resign him so they would have nothing after this season.

And what a bullet they dodged with Bauer. Sandy used the space to sign Walker, Pillar and Villar

Hill has pitched out of the bullpen plenty before. 2 straight seasons early in his career. He is the second lefty out of the pen if enough starters are back. If you have a SP injured in the playoffs, could easily step in there too. He will be a valuable piece going forward.

I think it was Eric in LI, who was calling for Mike Minor, because he can step in and pitch in the rotation, and go into the bullpen in the playoffs. Hill is exactly this type of move, but better if healthy imo. Also cost them really nothing. I was floored they got him.

I think you may be starting to read some people have some doubts. I think they're wrong.

Kelenic is similar in age (a little younger) to Tatis, Acuna, Soto - and those three all have achieved a lot already, and Kelenic is struggling massively.

Like I said I still think he'll be great, - he was crushing it in AAA after being sent down (over a 1.0 OPS) - but I wouldn't be surprised to see some fans frustrated and Kelenic maybe even letting some doubt start to creep in.

this guy was supposed to be the next Trout (or Trout-like).

on Scherzer. I get the whole trading within the division thing, but i think teams want the best deal. I mean it would be just as risky for the Mets to trade some of their top prospects knowing they could have to see them for the nexst 8 years or something. Scherzer has still been great, but he is getting up there in age and has had a few injuries. But man if healthy having him and Degrom heading into the playoffs would be absurd.
Scherzer
pjcas18 : 7/26/2021 9:21 am : link
is a rental, and the Nationals won a WS two years ago (so it's not like if the Mets win it would demoralize their fan base), I'm pretty sure they would trade with the Mets if the Mets offer was the best.

Having Scherzer in our rotation would be huge. He's 36 but pitching

Eric on Li : 7/26/2021 9:57 am : link
I don't think it's crazy to think that if any of the top 3 teams (LA, SD, NYM) in the NL get him they become the odds on favorite to go to the WS.

It would hurt bad to give up Ginn + Vientos for a rental but it may be necessary.

Random thought but if they do trade for a SP, I think I'd rather give up Peterson than Ginn, or at least I'd consider it. One would think he has more value since he can slot in to someone's rotation to start next year than Ginn who is still a few years away (which basically negates the age difference).
Eric, I’d have to agree
KDavies : 7/26/2021 10:06 am : link
I’d rather do Peterson. Ginn would be coming up at a time when some of the guys they have may be leaving/aging. His timing lines up better. There is also the issue that he probably has more upside, even if it’s the upside of the unknown.

If they re-sign Scherzer particularly. They would still have deGrom, Scherzer, Walker, Carrasco, Megill, Lucchesi, Yamamoto for next year. And that’s without resigning a Thor, Stroman or anything else. It would hurt losing Vientos, but you have to do it, particularly since they are trading for depth there. If you consider Vientos a 1B/DH, they have Alonso/Smith, etc.

this basically lines up with how I'm thinking. I also think I'd much rather Sherzer than Berrios. I'd rather trade value for the better player than for extra years of control (that can be bought with cash).

I do think the idea of eating cash in Donaldson to pay down the Berrios price is interesting though. If you can get Berrios cheaper than Scherzer because you are taking back Donaldson's $50m (which fangraphs values as equivalent to a 60 grade prospect - so more valuable than any prospect in our system except Alvarez) you have to think about it even if it's nauseating to think about the $40m going to Donaldson/Cano in the 2 seasons after this one.
