Any chance Peppers gets extended before Tuesday?

Ben in Tampa : 7/25/2021 2:33 pm
Jabrill Peppers is the New York Giants heat seeking missile.

He came to the team in the controversial OBJ trade, had an up and down year under Shurmur before getting hurt, and then really started to flourish with Judge and Graham.

He’s playing on the final year of his rookie deal, his fifth year option. His contract has not been a distraction publicly and his teammates appear to love him.

He’s going to want be to be paid top dollar, but the Giants have doubled down on Logan Ryan, drafted potential stud Xavier McKinney with a second round pick and have solid depth with Julian Love.

Any shot this gets resolved before camp opens? Do you expect Peppers to be resigned during the season? Do you expect him to walk in FA next off season?

Doubt it. & I wouldn't be surprised if he's on another team next fall.

I do not disagree...
Pick 2 of these 3
Guyton/Jackson : 7/25/2021 3:08 pm : link
Had this conversation with a buddy the other day…..if you could only re-sign 2 out of:
Peppers
Hernandez
Engram

Who would you extend?*

* I said Peppers & Hernandez b/c they haven’t been able to figure out how to use Easy E.

"Easy E" hasn't figured out how to catch a football.

christian : 7/25/2021 3:15 pm : link
Pepper played well down the stretch last year, but he’s also played about a season’s worth of good games over his career.

He’s the type of a guy you need to see a solid year from before committing to in my view.
There shouldn't be any chance.
Jimmy Googs : 7/25/2021 3:28 pm : link
Peppers has some very good play-making talents. And he also has tendencies to play undisciplined at times (albeit less as 2020 season went along) and get targeted in pass coverage. I think opposing Offensive Coordinators have less respect for Peppers than many on BBI realize.

He strikes me as a player that some in the market will overvalue, perhaps way overvalue. And my guess is he isn't a Giant for the long haul if that is the case...
The tag gives the team some leverage.
Big Blue Blogger : 7/25/2021 3:29 pm : link
Safeties tend to account for more than their share of tagged players (over 25% this year, I think) because the associated salaries are lower than most positions.
What is the hurry?
Mike in Boston : 7/25/2021 4:12 pm : link
What is the big advantage to either party in doing the contract now? if they do it now, Peppers will get more than he would if he has a lousy year or gets hurt, less than he would if he has a stellar season. And he loses the ability to get some team desperate for a safety to overpay him. The Giants will save money if he has a great year, and they still want him, but it will come at the cost of a big signing bonus they will regret if he doesn't have a good year, and they will assume a big cap (and money) risk in case of injury.

Assuming peppers has confidence in his ability, I do not think either side has much of an incentive to cut a deal now.
I don’t think he’ll be extended now
BillT : 7/25/2021 4:16 pm : link
But I think he’ll be the no.1 priority to sign after the season. He’s a key player who can play all over the field. His versatility is a huge asset and I think the kind of player Judge and Graham love.
I agree with all of the above
No Where Man : 7/25/2021 5:00 pm : link
but I'd like to add that Peppers value may increase playing under a fully stocked Patrick Graham defensive scheme.

Totally agree. I see him and Hernandez getting extensions if they play well this season. Engram will be history even if he plays decent this year.
If he has a strong season
GeoMan999 : 7/25/2021 5:44 pm : link
They will franchise him if they cannot get a deal done. As stated, the tag for safeties is actually reasonable.

If he has a so so season, they will not re-sign him and take the compensatory pick. The next offseason they will not sign any high priced free agents and only use the draft to get better
peppers played well last year and i'd love him to get signed
GiantsFan84 : 7/25/2021 5:45 pm : link
but i don't think they'd get him at a big discount if they re-signed him now. also there are some really good S prospects in this draft. i'd wait to see how the season plays out (they do have 2 first round picks) before committing to him with $. they can't pay everyone and have ryan and mckinney

hernandez and engram are as good as gone after this year as they should be. hopefully each plays well and earn a nice contract from someone else for comp pick purposes

I don’t see why we would
UConn4523 : 7/25/2021 5:57 pm : link
we should want him to play lights out again and go from there. If we are happy with McKinney and Co then let him walk. If not, tag him for insurance if you can’t reach a deal.

Good teams lose good players all the time, so it is what it is if the defense plays as good as last year or better. It means we are doing something right.
I guess I like him a lot more here than most
PatersonPlank : 7/25/2021 7:08 pm : link
He played really well last season, he is young, extremely athletic, and he seems to be a leader out there. He is pretty much all you want in an "in-the-box" safety, and can also drop deep. I hope we do re-sign him
I’d like Peppers back
Breeze_94 : 7/25/2021 7:13 pm : link
Tbh idk why they’d commit to a 30 y/o declining player in Ryan and let the ascending 25 y/o player walk.

Peppers is a better player at this point as well.
It sure feels good

Thanks Gettleman, Judge, Graham, etc., etc.

Agre, but keep the right perspective here. Not everybody should be asking for a bonus...
Sure.

Do I hope he does…yes
Do I think he will…no

Does it make sense to…I believe so but obviously at the right price, which I’m ok with what might seem to be an overpay. Any deal they make this year will be a lot less then what next years market looks like. The safety market is about the explode. Jamal Adams, Mathieu, Williams, plus others inline for new contracts.

I like Budda Baker as a comparable, so 15M/yr is the likely cost. But You have to look at the details. Bakers 15M/ is a lot different then Collins 15M/.

That’s a big bill when you have depth at the position, but he, like Tomlinson, are they type of guys you want to keep. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out though. So we shall see.

that's a damn fine post...
I think much of it will come down to the OL
UConn4523 : 7/25/2021 8:20 pm : link
and whether it takes the next step or needs a big FA acquisition heading into 2022. If the offense still struggles because of it then spending on Peppers seems unlikely.
Zero reason to do this
90.Cal : 7/25/2021 8:35 pm : link
If you want to resign him after this season that's fine... franchise tag for a safety isn't a killer either, that's also an option.

Jabrill is going to have to be head and shoulders better than McKinney and Love if we are going to give him a long term deal IMO... that or he has to play LB next to Blake more and idk if that's going to happen but I would like to see it.
Not for nothing, but Love is a good backup

Good back-ups do sometimes become quality starters...

That's not going to happen with Love. A fine roster player and not a big liability as a starter, but not a plus player nevertheless...
Peppers is going to be a tough call...
bw in dc : 7/25/2021 9:56 pm : link
because he is very multiple. He can make plays all over the field and he's excellent at making plays at and behind the LOS.

I typically wouldn't advocate paying a S top dollar - unless it's a freak like Ed Reed - but if Peppers puts together another quality season, like he did last year, we're going to have something to think about...

bw..gut feeling, is Peppers on the 2022 Giants?
I say yes..he seems to love playing here, is a quality player that fits the multiple skills quality Judge/Graham love so much.

My thought the exact moment the Ryan extension happened. And if we really do mold ourselves after the Patriots, Bill consistently let pass rushers walk while Chung and McCourty were partners for multiple contracts.

Peppers is better now than Chung ever was.
I love Pep hope he is resigned after a great year. The man get do it

Engram can't catch the ball. No way in hell I'd pay him before Peppers.

Probably not.
Beer Man : 7/26/2021 3:22 pm : link
The team has quality at the position. If the other Safeties perform well this season he will likely be seen as a luxury in a year where cap space could be tight. But then again, he could make it a hard decision for the team through his own play.

He's worth it but I wouldn't do it right now because you can just do it after the season if he still proves it in 2021. I'm willing to roll the dice on his pricetag going up.

We could potentially clear some cap space by getting it in advance, and potentially save on the contract itself. But, it seems like the Giants have been content to let players dictate their value in the final year of a contract for some time, so I don't see that happening.

I do think it should be said though, Jabrill Peppers was a big part of the recruiting efforts this year with Kenny Golladay and Adoree Jackson. He wants to be here so I have to imagine something will work out.
