NFT: St Pete area beach info - red tide?

NC Giants : 7/27/2021 6:07 am
I am headed to Moffitt for appointments next week and we are staying on Treasure Island this weekend. How bad is the red tide? I always bring rods to fish the surf, while my wife suns and reads on the beach.
Should we consider making a daily trek up to Honeymoon Island SP to get away from the mess?
It’s really bad this year

According to the local news, it’s the worst in 50 years
I can't speak to St. Pete

But we were at the beach in Nokomis about an hour north of St. Pete two weeks ago and it was glorious. No sign of red tide at all.

anna maria island on Sunday and it was nice, no red tide. I'm going to St Petes Friday-Sunday and the hotel cam for the sirata shows the beach and the water. I saw a bunch of people on the beach and in the water so it looks like its clear there. I think it's in patches and not the whole coast.

I am on Longboat Key, and it hasn't been too bad here (yet). Just up the road, however, Clearwater Beach & St Pete Beach have been particularly afflicted.

More like an hour south. I live two hours south in Cape Coral.
One of the absolute travesties of this area and the bullshit going on

around it is even more concerning. Piney point was a complete fuck up and two decades of deregulation in the making. And to have the balls to say it isn’t the cause when it originated around the site this year? It’s brutal out there and getting worse every year. July and August are certainly two months I’ll never understand why people come down here between the heat and red tide.
I was in Sarasota 2 weeks ago

and did Siesta Key & Venice Beach. We had to leave both early due to the red tide, specifically Siesta Key. Siesta Key was a mess with seaweed on the beach, but you couldn't stop coughing from the red tide.

Venice Beach was slightly better, although the Mote Aquarium website had it listed as no red tide that day, and it was wrong. We made it about 2-3 hours before we had enough.
It's bad

The county is warning it will be worse starting this weekend with winds coming from the west pushing more dead fish ashore. Though scientists can't agree, it is likely linked to a massive pollution spill into the bay, mainly because red tide usually doesn't happen this early in the year.
Flew into PIE last Thursday

and have been in Sarasota until today. Occasional dead fish and noticeable breathing difficulty at one or two areas on Lido Key but people were in the water and enjoying themselves. OTOH the smell of dead fish was strong when we drove down from St Pete on Thursday before getting to Palmetto, even on I-75.
Thanks for all the feedback

I'm still bringing my rods and we'll plan on being on the beach. Fingers crossed that the wind doesn't carry it all back.
