NFT: Olympics Coverage

moze1021 : 7/27/2021 9:38 am
Woke up excited to watch Women's Gymnastics final..then discovered NBC not airing until primetime.

I was disappointed but vowed to just keep my eyes off my phone and internet I general.

So I go put on NBC on at 9 and BOOM...they behave the result flashed across the bottom of the screen!! Doesn't showing the results on their network defeat the purpose of trying to withhold for ratings?

It's a different world than it was in the past. I really think they just need to make all streams available somehow and let people decide whether to watch live or recorded in prime time.

Am I missing something? Was that already available somewhere?

13 hours should be a good split where they can show some good stuff in primetime and in morning. It should be better than European Olympics. Can't wait for LA!

It was live on peacock

On the Gymnastics results. Doesn’t spoil anything for me, but for some who cared, that’s pretty screwed up to do news alerts on it, when they are showing it in prime time

I subscribe to Peacock and all of the Oly stuff is on there. Live and replays. I think you can watch anything in real time if you want to wake up early enough.
there's and olympics going on?

Reminds me of 1980...

I was waiting for the USA v. Soviet Union delayed broadcast when my local station broke in to breathlessly announce that Team USA won the game. I wasn't too disappointed, because they won, but geez.
This reminds me of 1996 when the Olympics were here...
sb from NYT Forum : 7/27/2021 10:05 am : link
...and NBC still didn't show things live so they could have a curated primetime broadcast.

I think 1996 is when I started losing my interest in the Olympics.
turn alerts off on your phone

other than call, text and email. No one NEEDS app and news updates pinging you all day for a myriad of reasons, but if you are following sports you should already know its going to happen.
There are livestreams on nbcolympics.com

But you need a cable subscription to really be able to watch anything.

"everyone" on BBI tells me it's ok to give a sports result in your thread title. If an event is going on/has completed you should just stay offline until you've watched it :)

Its common courtesy, and a really simple one at that. I stay off BBI if there's something i'm DVRing because people can't help themselves.
I have had to block NBC on YouTube
Adam G in Big D : 7/27/2021 2:20 pm : link
because they upload videos of the events AND POST THE RESULTS IN THE TITLE!
Trying to stay away all day from what happened last night

In today's world? You'd have to be put under anesthesia.

Sadly, they had gotten better about this like 2-4 weeks before the Olympics, but seem to have reverted.
I understand it's annoying
rsjem1979 : 7/27/2021 4:23 pm : link
NBC doesn't treat the Olympics like a sporting event, because they can package and sell it as a human event.

People who REALLY care about it will find the live online streams. People who can go the entire day without finding out what happened will watch in primetime and enjoy it all the same.

NBC pays billions of dollars to get the latter group to park it on their couches and watch at 8pm. Those are the people who make the advertising dollars roll in.

Yes...I agree..but isn't it weird for that same network to report on the results all day then show them as if they haven't happened at 8 PM?
NBC blows…
trueblueinpw : 7/27/2021 9:31 pm : link
I fired up the NBC Sports app to watch the USWNT play against the Kiwis and there’s a highlight with the title, Women beat Kiwis 6-1. I mean, how fucking stupid is that?

I don't think you need a cable subscription. I just clicked stream now and swimming popped right up.
Honestly, it’s American-centric

But that’s where the Olympics makes it’s money…NBC. And NBC makes it’s money from us. I kind of they should shift everything (in all Olympics) to a US schedule.
GB wins a bronze?
trueblueinpw : 7/27/2021 10:28 pm : link
So, I’m women’s team gymnastics we saw the US women and all the Biles drama and we saw the Russian Olympic Cheaters (ROC) “win” gold but we didn’t see a single British athlete in their winning the bronze? I get that it’s just the highlights package for prime time but I mean, not a single bronze athlete?

But the thing I always say when people say the Olympics coverage is too "American-centric" is that obviously it's going to be that way in America. It's just like watching a Knicks game on MSG or a Yankees game on YES. People in other countries are watching their own country's coverage-- pretty much every country (or at least language) has their own coverage/commentators. Even in other English-speaking countries-- in Canada it's covered by the CBC and in England it's covered by the BBC. There's really no harm in assuming 90% of the people watching NBC coverage are going to be rooting for the Americans and mainly watching with that in mind.

That said, something like not showing any of the England team gymnastics was indeed a little silly.

Well...they do have the swimming all scheduled to allow for it to be shown at a reasonable time Live in the US...so I think they may do that a bit.
Not sure why
Bricktop : 7/28/2021 12:04 am : link
NBCSN is showing a replay of a 0-0 USWNT game long gone vs Australia right now.

You'd get better ratings with an infomercial featuring a barbed wire-wrapped butt plug shaped like the Statue of Liberty.
