Giants president, CEO, and co-owner John Mara discusses the upcoming season and his expectations for the team with The Post’s Steve Serby. Q: Your emotions about the start of this training camp. A: I always look forward to it but maybe a little more so this year because of the prospect of having fans in the building again and because I think we greatly improved our team. There’s always a certain amount of anticipation. I would say this year, I’m looking forward to it even more than I usually do. Q: What tells you the New York Football Giants are ready to win? A: I feel like we’ve got the right pieces in place, I feel like we’ve improved the team through free agency and the draft. I’m very confident that we have the right coach in place, so I think we’re ready to start making a move, but until we start winning games, words are meaningless. Q: Why don’t you believe in a playoff mandate? A: I don’t think it does you any good to do that. I don’t think I need to say anything or do anything to motivate our coaches or our players any more than they already are. I think, when you issue mandates like that, they tend to backfire. Q: What gives you the belief that Daniel Jones is a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback? A: Any successful quarterback needs the right pieces around him. I think this year, he’ll be playing with a better group around him than he has before. But he’s shown a lot at the different stages of his career. I thought he played particularly well the last few games of last season, after he got healthy. He’s got a great work ethic, great poise, he’s tough, he can run, and the players around him seem to respect him. So I think he’s got everything you need, but, again, he has to prove it on the field. He’s aware of that. Everybody in the building has a lot of confidence in Daniel. Continue Reading... |
On Daniel Jones: “but, again, he has to prove it on the field.”
Must be a secret BBI poster.
Long overdue and very much deserved.
First....He had some amazing games vs. the Eagles.
Second...He hates the Eagles like we hate the Eagles...
Third....The Eagles always seem to retire or honor players when the Giants come to town to further amp up the players and fans. It is our turn to do the same.
Please do it vs. the Eagles, John!
The guy owns the team. It's an interview with a reporter...you want him to say "I know nothing"? Comments like these are perplexing.
He represents our team with grace and class and wants to win. Team success is cyclical. He certainly shoulders a big part of the blame for this past decade but man it just seems like he's a pinata for Giants fans. We could do a lot worse with ownership.
There are certainly mitigating circumstances -- Jones's health, bad talent, tough competition -- but the Giants offense did not play well the last 4 games of the season.
The Giants offense had one good half of football those last 4 games, the first half against the Cowboys. Second half they couldn't move the ball and the Cowboys had a legitimate chance to win the game at the end.
When an observation is based on a ridiculous assertion, either praising or critiquing the Giants, I tune it out.
Joe may have lost a few pounds, but I’m not sure he’s going to be doing any Weight Watchers commercials if that’s what you’re asking.
C'mon Joe, drop those pounds.
Q: How have the tone of your emails changed, if they have?
A: Much, much more positive (chuckles)... Very, very little negativity from our fans over the past few months.
Slackers...
Couple examples in this one include the Barkley extension comment whereas he now leaves off "expects he will be a Giant for a very long time", and supporting DG but really only as a "combination with Joe Judge". Probably a few others but not worth reading again...
Lol
Not a Game of Thrones fan, I guess?
My point was that his opinion on the state of the team (even assuming he's expressing his view candidly) is not informed by any special insight. His opinion on the state of the organization is obviously valuable.
A: No, you’re on the hot seat if you write any more stupid comments like that (laughs).
Q: Aside from me being on the hot seat, he’s not on the hot seat.
A: No.
Thumbs up emoji...

I guess I have equal trouble with fans that had difficulty seeing and can't appreciate the steady improvements and fighting spirit of the offense over the course of the season despite their obvious lack of talent
Sometimes things just don't work out and sometimes they do... usually it has nothing to do with caring or trying.

In the last five games DJ played, he had three games where he threw ZERO TD passes.
He did throw 2 the last game of the year against Dallas. But against Dallas last year, who didn't?

I have equal trouble with fans and analysts that point to the 5-3 finish as a great reason for optimism. The team finished 1-3 and and in those 3 losses, looked as bad or worse as they have at any point in the last 3 seasons. Like everyone, I'm hoping for vast improvement but nothing about last season makes me warm and fuzzy.
Just for comparison sake, the puff piece from last year with some quotes
So, the Giants co-owner isn’t going to pin general manager Dave Gettleman’s job security entering his third season at the controls to a certain number of victories or competing for a playoff spot and an NFC East title.
“That’s certainly what our goal is and I’ll be very disappointed if we are not in that situation,” Mara told reporters Thursday in his first remarks since January.“
“I feel good about the direction that we’re headed in right now and I want to feel that way in January as well – and I have reason to expect that I will,”
That's the thing about Mara, he's really got two notes.
I'm happy with the progress
I'm as disappointed as you, I'm the most disappointed
Sometimes he plays both notes at the same time.
Does anyone think he is going to accurately review the team? What is the case for his credibility as a source?

I have a great deal of respect for you as a poster, but I have no idea what you would expect the owner to say? I thought that considering who he is, it was a decent interview. The most insightful thing an owner can do is convey his feelings about the state of the team, anything beyond that should come from the HC.

I see -- so a winning record in the last half of the season, when a team is devoid of offensive skill players is bad.
Haha! Couldn't resist. Like a moth to the flame Go Panic arrives.

6-10 and 17.5 PPG is bad. Really bad.

Well, he's not wrong. Averaging 17.5 PPG in today's NFL isn't, uh, good. I will chalk some of that up to no Saquon, a shaky OL, & not great skillplayers...no excuses for that PPG not to be much higher this season.

If I wanted to see someone panic I'd just post an obviously CGI'd video and ask you to figure out whether or not it's real.
I'm also dying to see your "grades" and "evaluation" of Daniel Jones that you referenced in the other thread. We could all use a good laugh these days.

his biggest gaffes speaking were the Eli benching and Josh Brown. the ones you mentioned I didn't think were a big deal tbh.

I don't agree with the context of this sentiment - one bit. Matter of fact, I think this board has been way too easy in criticizing, and optimistic over the last few years than what it should be/ should have been. I'm actually pretty shocked. I think too many fans have accepted ineptitude way too much.
With respect - I think you are doing the same.
If you say he certainly deserves the big part of the blame -- then what does "big part of the blame" mean to you? Your words sound pretty hollow.
Overall we have been one of the worst teams in all of football over the last several years, right? So why wouldn't the owner be a pinata if he is such a big part of the blame? He's the boss, right?

Anyone that thinks the Maras don't care or haven't done everything in their power to win are idiots...

I think it’s fair to criticize the timing and manner of his transition away from Coughlin and Reese, the limited GM search and setting the franchise back with the hiring of McAdoo and Shurmur. But I don’t attribute it to a lack of care or trying.
Of course. I agree they've made mistakes. Re-read what I wrote and you quoted me on... I never suggested otherwise.
