Was hoping we would see Poirier beat his ass a few weeks ago. He was well on his way to doing so, but now McGregor has his excuse with the leg break. He will now spend a full year using that as the reason he lost. He and his coach (who is his biggest Yes-Man in my opinion) already claimed that first round was going great for him, even though two judges had a 10-8 for Poirier.
McGregor has had nothing but Dana White privilege in the UFC. Remains in the rankings despite not fighting and even "retiring." Barely got blowback for the whole dolly through the bus incident which actually injured other fighters who had to miss their fights. He sucker punched an old man in a bar. Has had a couple of sexual assault cases. Talked to Poirier's wife like that on the mic after the fight And Dana is there to kiss his ass and hype him up the whole time.
I think he is pretty much done as a fighter. He is overrated, and the rest of the top end of the lightweight division would all beat him at this point. I am guessing we see McGregor/Diaz 3 and then he is finally done, maybe another boxing match. I highly doubt he sniffs a title again.

I don't know about UFC overtly going in that direction, but there is something to be said about a trend in sports in general I think where people care more about storylines than actual play/performance.
There's a good interview with Ben Askren after his Jake Paul fight. The guy made more money losing in that farce than his entire Bellator career.
If your skills are going south like McGregor's appear to be, then being despicable in the public eye is probably more lucrative and definitely easier than chasing your old peak.

but Floyd's strategy was clearly to hang back and avoid taking anything that could do real damage, let Conor gas out (and we knew he inevitably would), then take it to him in the later rounds.
Floyd is clearly content to pad his bank account (if not his legacy) by fighting likes of McGregor and Logan Paul. Guys who don't pose any real threat, but people will pay to see a glorified exhibition. And Floyd's smart enough to know the money would stop flowing if he took these guys apart as quickly as he's probably able to.
