All signs point to UFA G Jonathan Bernier signing with New Jersey today.
As we reported before, UFA G Jaroslav Halak should be signing with Vancouver.
I wonder if UFA G James Reimer ends up in SJ or Vegas?
Still lots to play out with goalies.
Alec Martinez extension with VGK is 3 years for $5.25M per
Tyson Barrie with 3 years at $4.5M per in Edmonton
Looks like Goalie Freddy Anderson is going to sign with Carolina.
ADA deal with Carolina looks to be 1 year for $1M
D Mike Reilly signs with the Bruins 3 years $9 million.
Zach Hyman signs 7 year deal with Edmonton.
Nick Bonino to San Jose.
Calgary acquiring DMan Nikiti Zadorov from Chicago.
Link - ( New Window )
Antii Raanta to Carolina- 1 year, $2M
I don't understand why the Wild couldn't trade him and eat half instead of this. I guess the NMC made it better for Suter to get bought out and sign a new deal?
Jordan Martinook resigns with Carolina at 3 years, $1.8M per. Nice signing there.
Luke Glendenning going to Dallas on a 2 year deal at $1.5M per.
G Brian Elliott going to TB, 1 year deal around $900K.
Granlund back to Nashville at 4 years, $5M per.
Goligoski to the Wild for 1 year at $5M.
G Braden Holtby going to Dallas for 1 year.
Yep the back end will probably hurt on that deal, but it's a move they needed to do. Their PP closer resembled monkeys humping a football than it did an NHL team last year. They had to add some vets to the ridiculous collection of 23 and unders they have ammased. Bernier is a solid add as a good vet 1A/2 type goalie. Adding some some goal scoring with a top 6 type fwd would be perfect bit with this FA class I don't see it unless maybe a guy like Mike Hoffman.
DMan Derek Forbort signs with Boston at 3 years, $3M per.
Parise looks to be returning to the Devils.
Gotta say the Nemeth deal looks pretty good with some of this crazy money thrown around to very average DMen.
Bogosian back to TB at 3 years, $850K per.
Sharks signing James Reimer.
Yeah everyone had him to the Isles but now it seems like it's the Devils.
Getzlaf signing a 1 year deal to stay in Anaheim.

That would be awesome. It's not the top 6 forward that they need but he adds value as a bottom 6 forward. Most importantly he provides much needed leadership up front.

Seems like a twitter guy got confused about Lou Lams. I think he's going to the Isles like everyone said originally
Getzlaf signing a 1 year deal to stay in Anaheim.
Fought and beat Tom Wilson last year
Tom Wilson is dictating the Rangers offseason
He's just a depth defensemen who shouldn't see the ice unless injuries take a toll....but if Drury (ie Slats) turns this promising young team into the gritty gritters who grit I'm going to be fucking furious
yeesh...that's a hefty deal
There has got to be a more substantial move coming. I can't imagine they fired Gorts and JD just so Slats and Drury could tinker the bottom of the roster
Good for Drury to avoid that
Not sure he is worth all that
Jaden Schwartz gets 5 years at $5.5M
Thrilled NYR didn't win that bidding contest. Love him as a player but not sure it would be worth the trouble to flip him and Strome. Would rather give Barron a chance or buy a 4th line center in the 2 million and under category.
That surprises me with Dreidger and Vanecek from expansion draft

If so, with all the musical chairs today, have to think a few of the potential suitors have dropped out simply due to cap constraints (LAK, potentially Minny). Not sure who really remains as potential fits in addition to the Rangers, maybe MTL? ANA?
If Eichel is the prize here, hopefully this game of chicken has paid off for Drury, as Adams is seeing his options vanish. If not, the Rangers will have some cap space to maneuver and take on whatever comes available throughout the year, while seemingly still having a potential deadline asset in Strome.
Cancer in the locker room? I genuinely do not know the cause of the hysteria.
He's a big time Republican and Trump supporter and likes to let you know about it on Twitter (or at least used to) which in this day there's a large sector of people that don't appreciate it.
There was apparently bad blood between him and Georgiev (the Rangers goalie) for a while. They fought in the tunnel after a game and that was it... There were rumors on twitter that he was giving an AA teammate K'Andre Miller a hard time. Those rumors have not been substantiated.
By all accounts many if not all of his teammates liked him. He was always willing to step up for teammates and frankly seemed to enjoy it.
He's not a good defender but can be a very high end offensive defenseman. People that have a problem with the signing likely feel that way due to political reasons and his past transgressions in Juniors.

Thank you sir. Looks like the Canes did sign him.

It's looking more and more like Adams painted himself into a corner and has few options left. The Rangers just might be able to get Eichel at a deep discount, something like Zac Jones, a first, and some other prospect.
Maybe some tension in the locker room too. I think it was FMiC who had a source that said some teammates had asked him to cool it with political chatter amongst the group. Essentially leave it at the door when you show up, whether you were in agreement or not politically, it turned into a distraction. He's polarizing to say the least.
And while that could be a distinction without a difference - being an asshole is being an asshole does it really matter how you are an asshole?
however so many people alluded to TDA's racist past because that detail was always omitted from stories about his juniors incident causing many people to jump to conclusions his incident was racial - so he must have problems with Miller.
but as jv mentioned, none of that (TDA issues with Miller) was ever substantiated and only ever refuted by Miller directly or via his agent.
I can definitely see TDA and goalies having issues, TDA is a horror show in his own end.
I think the Brooks tweets are a little weird - what team has a lot of depth for the top-nine? I'm not concerned about the top-nine at all, even if you were to lose Kravtsov and Chytil (I'd hate to lose Kravtsov, though).

Actually, nevermind, yes, losing Kravtsov and Chytil would be rough. I'd try my hardest to avoid losing Kravtsov. I was a little too flippant there lol.
The bigger issue is the Zibanejad/Strome juggling regardless of if we get Eichel or not.
Underscore jv and pj: he is a careless disaster in his own end. A lot of it, imo, was mental, negligent in his outlet passes, as well as positioning on entries, so maybe room for improvement.
My point wasn't to make a compelling defense or any defense, my point was writers intentionally left out the fact it was an ethnic slur (aboriginal? not even sure what) incident in juniors so people naturally assumed it was racial.
And IMO that's a big deal. And as I said it doesn't mean TDA is less of an asshole (if you think that makes him an asshole), but it does mean you shouldn't jump to conclusions about TDA being a racist - which is the point many Rangers bloggers tried to make - without any facts.

The other note I remember reading about DeAngelo is that he's fine when things are going well, but he doesn't handle adversity well at all. I believe the term "ticking time bomb" was used. If things go poorly, it seems that he lashes out at anybody in range, whether that's an official or a teammate (as we saw with Georgiev). I think that, more so than his politics, is why lots of teams won't touch him. Seems to tie into the "maturity" issue.

With due respect, it's semantics. People who use racist, bigoted slurs are racists and bigots. Who gives a shit whether a little reported on event that transpired in juniors was directed at a Jewish hockey player as opposed to an African American player? If he directed the slur at a French Canadian vs. Middle Eastern player, does that not make him a douchbag? What if it was a coach and not a player? Better?
You have a pattern of making excuses for despicable behavior. You're better than that.
I am not making excuses for anything or saying anything is ok. No idea how you get that from my post.
but being racist is treated differently than other types of bias.
If you can't acknowledge that and how it played in to TDA's time in NY then no point furthering the discussion, just agree to disagree and move on. I don't need the sanctimony because you don't understand the point.

That incident was merely one piece of him being cut loose. It was not THE reason. A lot of Ranger fans questioned his acquisition at the time. A lot of Rangers' fans disliked him for being outspoken about his politics. A lot of Rangers' fans questioned his new deal because of his play in his own zone (which you cited above).
I don't care about his politics. I do care that he's an asshole and a likely racist and I'm not going to split hairs on which slur he used. I'm glad the idiot's gone. We should've dealt him 2 years ago.

Yea that's too much money to spend on a 7th defenseman. This also opens the door for Bahl.

I think they're favorite to get the #1 pick again next year. Them or ARI.
I'm surprised Kessel hasn't been moved. Maybe at the deadline. And Dvorak.
Besides Dvorak I like Jakob Chychrun and Clayton Keller, but that's not a nucleus.

Let's face facts, pj, your 3:51 was a mess. LOL Bottom line, it was a distinction w/o difference. The non-difference is hatred, whether because of race or ethnicity. Does it matter? Is anti-Asian, anti-semitism, or anti-Serb, e.g., any less cause for opprobrium than anti-AA? I don't believe for a second that you think those are.
No, I don't think it's any less cause for criticism, but I do believe being a racist would get more attention. And I believe it's why the NYR bloggers were always vague about his OHL suspension and it's why some of them fabricated or pushed racist TDA stories. I think the evidence is pretty clear that certain bloggers 100% made shit up or at least pounced on the ambiguity of the OHL suspension (and it was very likely due to TDA's political affiliations IMO).
So I'm not saying his slur not be racist makes him a better person, but I am saying it not being racist makes it less newsworthy.
if you disagree fine, but you say something anti-aboriginal you apologize to the victim, you say something racist it's hard to come back (and it probably should be), but IMO it's not a distinction without a difference in the court of public opinion even if it is a distinction without a difference to someone's character.
that's all I'm going to say about it - people are free to have their own opinion.

Breaking News: As reported by @frank_seravalli
the #CBJ Joonas Korpisalo is available for trade.
Devils and Carolina remain the 2 teams that make the most sense. A few teams that were seemingly in on him have went elsewhere. Talking about LA and Vegas. The guy suggests a slim possiblity of a Tarasanko/Eichel trade. Seems like they're having a tough time with the asking price ever since they offered him up for free to the Krak. Not a single mention of the NYI.
I think BUF rides it out until someone either gets desperate or they do. Or like you said jv, he plays for them this year and re-establishes himself as an elite C. He's under contract and they have plenty of cap space, they are under no obligation to trade him.
What would a healthy Eichel command? A week ago I'd say Zegras and the Ducks first if it was Anaheim. Maybe Byfield and their first if the Kings. For the Rangers, one of Kakko/Laf and a first. Maybe I'm even underselling it.
I think some here underrate Eichel a bit. Health and other concerns are totally valid however, so it's not an easy call.
I think you're right on the value, but I was thinking BUF might be looking for more high quality prospects instead of teams best.
So for LAK IOW maybe Turcotte and Kaliyev plus a 1st instead of Byfield.
For ANA maybe Drysdale and Perreault and a 1st.
something like that - you know a quantity over quality thing.
Because what's the point if you give up Eichel and get a player who in all likelihood is not going to be as good as Eichel (and draft picks who also won't likely be as good as Eichel).
the way I think of it is if you can get quantity you're improving the overall floor of your team if you know what I mean.
but who knows what BUF is thinking. I still don't know why they traded Reinhart. FLA can be really good this year.
As I said a week or two ago, any team that is going to make a deal should insist on making its own, physical exam replete with MRI. It would be just the sort of negligence, professional malpractice, you lay at the feet of a wet behind the ears GM.
I'd love this but I'd also low ball the fuck out of St Louis to start
They left the dude unprotected for fuck's sake...they aren't getting a king's ransom for him
Any source for this?
This would be a head scratcher for me. Trade arguably our best all around F in Buch (who ended up signing for sub $6M), and essentially replace him with a winger who has a higher salary hit ($6.5M), and is coming off of 3 shoulder surgeries. All of this while again pushing one of the kids down to the 3rd line, which seemingly is why they freed up Buch's spot.
I'd be happy with Saad as long as the contract didn't exceed 3-4 years. I would prefer Tarasenko as long as the doctors clear him.
Insider info? Because on the hoof, it makes no sense
Anak, not surprised. I hope we can get a second or third for him.

That's great and all. But not using racial slurs and not using racial slurs at work is really not that high a bar to set for oneself or others. I don't know you or pjcas personally but I'd suspect neither one of you has ever directed a racial slur at a co-worker.
And let's not pretend this assholishness is an isolated incident. If it were, he'd probably still be in NY.
Sounds like a bull shit rumor to me. The ONLY money this team is spending (past next season)is on a top 2 line center. Otherwise it will only be on a 1 year deal (through trade on someone with only 1 year left or a UFA for only 1 year)...since we have plenty of cap space this upcoming season, but then it gets tight going forward from there.

We cannot judge someone's whole life until we've been knocked the fuck out at work.
I personally never used a slur toward a teammate, I grew up in the projects where I was practically a minority so I always had respect for words - but I'd use other words that were still vulgar if not quite as derogatory, but fights with teammates? Sure, it happens.
Some of you talk out of your asses and think it's intelligent or informed , but it's really spewing bullshit.
Minority, non-minority didn't matter we were tough on each other - and sometimes it did cross a line with some people (unfortunately). But we were super protective, fiercely protective if anyone else was brutal to our teammates.
Kind of like a family.
I am not condoning what TDA did or said at 17 - it's not Ok, but I'm also not surprised at 17 he said something derogatory. I'm actually surprised the OHL suspended him for it, I view that as progress. I'm also encouraged that TDA has not had another diversity policy violation (at least not publicly) - that's how life is supposed to work.
When you do something wrong, you get penalized for it and pay a price, and you learn from it and are a better person for it. Of course it would be great if people didn't need to learn lessons the hard way, but that's not very realistic to expect.

Wonderful. Now apply this "live and let learn" philosophy to someone with whom you disagree politically and let's see if you end up in the same place.
I think your take is more than a little naive. Plenty of folks face the consequences for a thing. Some pay a little. Some end up paying their entire lives. Many do so disproportionately.
I'm not convinced TDA has learned anything. He's 25 and still carrying on with his dickbag bro routine. All while getting paid $5M a year. Boo fucking hoo.
Agree with pj, the Eichel hangup is his medicals not being shared by the Sabres. It would probably collapse their offers in hand, at the least.

Rangers chose McIlrath over him (as I'm sure you remember) after Gaborik got his ass kicked by Carcillo. Repeating those mistakes this off-season, on a more minor scale, imo.

I live in the extremes because I recognize a pattern of behavior that's repugnant? I live in the extremes because I think racism doesn't have a place in sports?
Your adorable kumbaya semi-pro hockey anecdote aside, sports on all levels has a problem with racism and bigotry. All sports. Particularly the NHL and European soccer. Athletes and fans alike. Adolescents who grow up in communities where this isn't addressed, or addressed with a wink and nod become adults who throw banana peels at professional soccer players and colleagues throw glib fried chicken and watermelon shade at Tiger Woods. It's why it's such a big deal when a football player announces he's gay.
Ever wonder what it was like for Grant Fuhr or Jerome Iginla coming through the league? Jackie Robinson? What do you think it was like being an LA Clipper with a withered racist ballsack as your owner? You think any of them would agree with your take that racial slurs ought to be graded on a sliding scale based on which group is offended?

Interesting with Saad. The money isn't bad, the term is a bit long. I figured he's spent his whole career deep in the playoffs. He didn't want to go to a rebuilding team like the Devs. With all the guys down the road we'll have to pay like Hughes, Smith, Sharengovich etc...5 years is too much term any way.
You lose any credibility you have an come off as disingenuous and make me less inclined to even respond.
I never said that there *should* be a sliding scale, I said society reacts differently based on the slur. It's a fact, not my take on how it should be.
but the rest of your word salad is silly almost juvenile like a kid wrote it. Almost no one in 2021 thinks racism should exist in sports or anywhere. I would say no one, but I'll allow for the fraction of a percent of actual racists who think racism should exist in sports.
but thinking it shouldn't exist doesn't mean it doesn't exist and the way to eradicate it is exactly how the incident with TDA was handled in the OHL.

No. You placed the blame squarely on the media or bloggers for mischaracterizing the slur and the anti-aboriginal slur TDA used wasn't quite as bad. Which is where this all began. The slur was bad enough that the OHL suspended TDA and forced him to apologize. I'm sure he loved that. I'm sure it was all rooted in friendly team banter.
Not worth my time to reply to you.

Stop it. Be a big boy, take the L, and quit trying to weasel your way out of the semantics box you've put yourself in.
If TDA took his OHL suspension and this was the last we'd heard of it and he spent the rest of his career as a model citizen, that'd be one thing. But he's now on his 4th franchise by the age of 25, his behavior online is at best immature (not to mention immature behavior on the ice and in the locker room), and the Rangers gave up on him 6 games into a $9.6 million contract. There's just a lot of evidence that he hasn't really changed much as a person. And that's before some of the stuff we heard from sources here as to what was really going on in the locker room between him and Georgiev. This is beyond second chances and whether or not actions as a teenager should follow you forever. Tony is working on chance 4 or 5 at least. At some point, it seems like he's just not getting it. We'll see how it goes in Carolina, I'd have to think it's his last shot.
Let's get back to free agency

You're pedantic and tiring, you offer no substance, and live in a world devoid of reality.
Take a W and L I don't care whatever it is that makes your lack of self esteem feel better I don't care, I'm not engaging with you any further.

Apparently after a full day of back and forth yesterday between Montreal and Buffalo, Habs have upped their offer for Eichel and are waiting for a clear medical report. A few teams have dropped out of the sweepstakes, notably, Minnesota. Few teams remain. #GoHabsGo
Which would be an overpay

Where's Kevyn "Baghdad Bob" Adams when you need him?
LOL, a 10M per year diva with a bad neck and the Sabres think they can dictate terms? I'm not even trading Chytil or Kravtsov for Eichel, let alone Kakko, Lundkvist or Schneider. They can go fuck right off. They'll take what they can get for their damaged goods and just be happy that they'll be off the hook for his 10M per and be free of the distraction.
Personally, I think this will be a big mistake because I’m sure Habs will lose some very top players like Romanov, Kotkaniemi , maybe not Suzuki, and give up a #1……all for a guy who may now be damaged goods.
Pj…..do you agree with me here? Do you see Bergeron making this big move here?

Yes, I agree, I think it's coming.
and if it costs Kotkaniemi, Caufield, Suzuki or Romanov I wouldn't be happy.
I'd deal Poehling who seems to be a forgotten man in MTL. But that doesn't get close and he's coming off his own injury (wrist, so nothing like Eichel), but still.
I'd do Poehling, a 1st and Drouin (and have BUF eat half Eichel's salary)

Tough to ay what's true or not. NHL investigators should be able to find out quite easily. Whether they publicly announce the findings is another thing. If true, he should be banned from the NHL. If not, this is likely to work against her in divorce proceedings.
Not a good look either way.

Remember Michael Strahan’s divorce that was fodder for the Post and other tabloids? His ex said he was gay and that he taped her sister changing in their home.
(In unrelated news, Strahan’s ex was recently arrested for stalking a woman she had previously been in a relationship with.)

Last year was canceled due to COVID.
It's a U18 tournament, so no one who's been drafted.
US has Mike Knuble's son and a couple other players.
Matvei Michkov from Russia is *the* player to watch. He's amazing.
No Canada due to COVID. They usually dominate this.

not really a harbinger of things to come for US U18, they rarely do well in this. Won it twice, have medaled only 3 times since 2010 (2013, 2014, 2016 - none since then).
they didn't medal in the U18 WJC, but they won the World Juniors in January
Loved the tuna in MTL. Hate to see him go, but can't keep everyone.
Very solid move plus they are still trying to land Tarasenko. Ths Devils also signed Sharangovich to a 2 year $4 million dollar contract. They have plenty of cap room left.
I’m assuming Tatar will start on a line with Hughes and Sharangovich knocking Kuokkanen down to the 3rd line.

That is one of the best deals of the offseason. Great move by Lou.
Feeling here is that teams in Rangers' division, specifically NYI and NJD, have helped themselves improve this offseason, Rangers--not so much. By asserting that I am not making a plea for an Eichel deal.
