NFT: Mets Minors 7/28/2021-Ronny Mo goes yard... twice

DanMetroMan : 7/28/2021 10:34 am
Great piece on how the Mets really backed themselves into a corner by not taking an "insurance pick" (linked)

AAA
Williams 0-1, 2 BB, K
Lee 1-3, 2 k's

AA
Mangum 1-3, 2 BB, SB (He's been awful overall)
Baty 0-3, BB
Vientos 1-3, HR
Senger 1-3
Butto 5 innings 7 hits 4 runs 1 walk 9 k's

BK
Mauricio 2-3, 2 HR, BB, K
Alvarez 2-4, K

St. Lucie
Palmer 1-4, 3 k's
Peroza 2-4, HR
Ramirez 0-4, K

Sucks the Mets didn’t take an insurance pick

Means the analysis comes down to whether Rocker is worth the ($4.5Mish?) 10th pick slot money or not. If he is, then you probably need to offer him the whole $6M. If not, then unfortunately the over slot amount is a sunk cost and we have to move on to next year.

Possibility the Mets could have 5 picks in the first two rounds next year if they don’t sign Rocker and qualify Noah and Conforto.

I've
DanMetroMan : 7/28/2021 10:41 am : link
heard it's unlikely the Mets would offer Syndergaard the QO. The concern internally is him taking that and not being able to give a full slate of innings. They may offer him a 1 year deal with incentives that get there but 22 million when you already have Cano's contract back on the books might be a bit much. This is just what I've heard, not my opinion.

Are any of these Trade Winds going to blow a Pitcher our way ?

Baez at 2B moves McNeil...where ?

I'd like to see Ronny Mo get some time in LF, just to get his feet wet in outfield grass.

Considering both Baty and Vientos have seen time in LF, I think it's likely Mauricio does as well, as soon as next month (assuming he's not traded). He's expected to move to Bing somewhat soon.
Vientos OPS up to .920 with an absurd .313 isolated slugging
Eric on Li : 7/28/2021 10:58 am : link
which on a quick browse is the 3rd highest over the past 20+ years when compared to the best seasons of our best players (Alonso's rookie year and Beltran's 2nd year were slightly higher and the only others I could find that went over .300). Delgado's first year as a Met was .282. Piazza's best year as a met was .290. Wright's best was .232. Point being at age 21 he is showing some serious power. Alonso never went over .290 as a minor leaguer though that was in part because in his best year as a ML'er he hit for a higher BA.

Also making it more impressive is that the K rate and BB rates are both solid and his BABIP so far this year is very pedestrian at .300 (actually the lowest of his career), though that's also probably in part why his isolated slugging % is so high. His .579 slg% is slightly better than Alonso's final year in the minors even though half of that year was in Vegas and he was a couple years older. So he's not just showing a little power he's showing some real 30-40+ homer power. I know he's always been touted for his exit velocity would be interesting to see what he's done this year. I remember Alonso's last year he was posting numbers higher than guys in the big leagues.

very disappointing to read scouting sources with other teams shocked by what the Mets did. It's easy for fans on the internet to question this stuff but when people employed to do this stuff do the same it's a bad look.

It’s big velocity and some feel for spin, but significant reliever risk given the present delivery and command, and the fact that he isn’t really getting stretched out at this point is instructive probably.

Interesting - thanks for putting that together. Wonder how he's been looking in LF.
It has been standard practice to take a backup if you go over slot 1st
KDavies : 7/28/2021 11:14 am : link
I wonder if having the draft cut down to 20 rounds now has changed that. I think it will still ultimately get done. Even if he needs TJ (I know reports are to the contrary), it’s still worth signing him
that's why logic has to point towards it being worse than typical TJS
Eric on Li : 7/28/2021 11:20 am : link
which is just unfortunate all around.

Yes they should have picked some additional bonus options in the even they had extra money to spend but I think they had agreed to terms with Rocker almost right after they picked him.

Just sucks for everyone involved - but more Rocker than anyone else. if he doesn't get signed I assume he's going to have to rehab/repair whatever the issue is and re-enter next year? Where he will probably be lucky to get 1/2 of what they were going to pay him this year.

bottomline nobody wins just a crappy situation.

Ugh....I know they drafted about 8 - 10 pitchers this year. The success rate isn't always very high. There may be only a few Major Leaguers in that whole bunch.

Agreeing to terms is secondary, most (if not all) of the high picks have verbal agreements before even being picked. Cowser for example told teams he already had a deal with the Orioles when they called him. They still could/should have selected a "back up" pick after round 10. There is no downside to punting one of these later picks "no chance he signs without 7 figures". As for your suggestion it could be something worse than TJ... doubtful. There would be no negotiation to be had. If you believe Martino it's not even clear he needs surgery at all let alone something worse than Tommy John.

TOS is not an elbow injury. It's not TOS (assuming the elbow stuff is accurate).

"The thoracic outlet is the ring formed by the top ribs, just below the collarbone. Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) occurs when nerves or blood vessels are compressed by the rib, collarbone or neck muscles at the top of the outlet."
teams don't usually worry about acute injuries vs. chronic
Eric on Li : 7/28/2021 11:40 am : link
the mets discovered Kay needed TJS, they saved some money and signed him. They knew it when they went overslot for Ginn. Matt Allan just got TJS after not that many pro innings I'm sure they still think highly of him.

were this just a repairable injury like TJS there would be almost no reason for a stalemate unless they were negotiating lower to sign some additional bonus baby like they did with Kay - but we know that's not a possibility here.

which is what makes me think the concern is some kind of potentially chronic or degenerative issue.

@Feinsand
The Reds are finalizing a deal to acquire RHP Mychal Givens from the Rockies, per source.
there's nobody else to spend any saved money on, or is that wrong?
Eric on Li : 7/28/2021 12:01 pm : link
again the Mets spent nearly 3m on Ginn, paying him almost double slot, knowing he needed TJS before the pick.

it would be a pretty big departure from that to pass on what they viewed as a $6m prospect for 4.5m next year just because they are afraid of a standard TJS during a window when they had already shut Rocker down.

I think 1 of these 2 things has to be true:
1- either they are trying to save a few million for the sake of it but still plan to sign Rocker even though they have nobody else to spend the $ on.
2- something about his injury scares them a lot more than Ginn's.

I hope it's #1 and they just don't want to establish a bad precedent but even if it were it would seem to be unlikely to drag on like this.
Unfortunately
DanMetroMan : 7/28/2021 12:03 pm : link
now that I actually "know" (mostly) the situation I can't provide much of an opinion here. I'll say this, the person I spoke to said Rocker had the highest odds of signing out of the 3 unsigned 1sts.

At this point it's financial in the sense they still want to get this done, not that the "issue" is so bad they would walk away because of it. If the walk away, it won't be because "woah they found this horrible thing that can't be taken care of".
.
DanMetroMan : 7/28/2021 12:30 pm : link
I would have given up a "Williams-level" prospect for Givens. Fangraphs didn't rank Williams in the Reds top 36 prospects and his 2021 numbers are awful (granted he's 19) #Mets

Highly doubtful. Below average at 3b and LF right now so it's very unlikely they use a rookie (skipping AAA) carrying a 28.4% AA K rate as a bench bat.
