Jeff Passan @JeffPassan · 8m BREAKING: The Los Angeles Dodgers are making significant progress on a deal that would send them star right-hander Max Scherzer and star shortstop Trea Turner from the Washington Nationals for a prospect-laden return, sources tell ESPN. |
If true, the return to the Nats had better be huge.
Thats a move old yanks would make. New yanks jus stand pat and dumpster dive for groceries
For some reason the Dodgers always get a pass for their over the top spending. The Yankees are the villains while LA goes unnoticed

Funny how that works.

Likely an acknowledgment that they aren't going to spend $$$ to keep him. Which is a shame, but given how deficient the Nationals are at multiple positions, a prospect haul and rebuild is what this team needs, and it needs it badly. With all of that money tied up with Strasburg & Corbin they don't have a lot of great options with free agency, and their farm system is sorely lacking (ranked #30 here):

Why? Trea Turner and Scherzer are now out of the division for good

If trade is completed, full package headed to Nationals for Scherzer and Turner will be C Keibert Ruiz, RHP Josiah Gray and two mid-range prospects, sources tell
@TheAthletic
Yasiel Puig (out of league), Matt Kemp (out of league), and Alex Wood (back of rotation starter) for Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray
They then used Downs and Gray, as well as Alex Verdugo and lower level prospects to acquire Max, Betts, and Turner
So the final trade looks something like:
Puig, Kemp, Alex Wood and Verdguo for Betts, Scherzer, and Turner

Because they’re not beating the dodgers in the playoffs
@dougherty_jesse
Can confirm that the full return is Keibert and Josiah Gray — LA's top two prosects — plus RHP Gerardo Carrillo and outfielder Donovan Casey.
Honestly not the haul I was expecting for Max and Trea. Great work by the Dodgers.

Let’s worry about the playoffs if we get there.
I’m thrilled that Turner is out of the division. He’s been a Met killer his whole career. The Nats are gonna suck the rest of this year and next.

The goal is winning a WS. Scherzer is now much more of an obstacle for this year (and likely beyond) than he was in WAS as currently constituted. Turner too.
The goal is to win the division and set yourself up for sustained success. Just because the Dodgers made a trade means nothing at this point.

I agree. The Nats should have been able to get more. They desperately need a third baseman - Kieboom has been awful as their future 3B - and the Dodgers have a good one in Vargas.
First one to retweet wins!

The Dodgers won the WS in 2020.
They entered this year as the odds on favorite. (obviously pre-Scherzer/Turner)
They are currently the WS favorite.
They have the 2nd most wins in the NL and are now adding the 2nd most productive healthy position player in the NL and a HOF starter who were arguably the 2 best players on the 2019 WS winners.
The NYM have the 4th best WS odds in the NL. They are 7.5 up on the Nats. Of course they need to get healthy but that will or won't take care of itself. Scherzer and Turner going to the NLW is a lot worse than them going just about anywhere else.
Thats a move old yanks would make. New yanks jus stand pat and dumpster dive for groceries
Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo are dumpster dives?
Granted, they're not Turner and Scherzer, but the Yanks have genuinely added impact so far.

Stay off BBI Yankee threads if the team ever actually finishes below .500. It'll be ugly

I hope you're right.
And yes, the Dodgers are probably not expecting to see Trevor Bauer take the field again….this year at least. So, I’m pretty sure they didn’t want to see San Diego pick up a 4th big name starting pitcher.
Lastly, two of the guys they gave up should be stars for the Nats for many years to come…JoJo Gray and Ruiz the catcher.

Dont see Yanks giving out another 300 mill contract which is what Seager will be seeking.

For all you Yankee fans out there, it is not a secret that Seager will be a FA this off-season and has always loved the Yankees and would like to play for them. So, I’m pretty sure the Dodgers are planning his farewell. So, while you are lamenting losing Turner….drool over Seager, the man who won both MVP awards for the two playoffs including the WS.If you get him, which I suspect you will, life will be good again.

They will…..he wants to be a Yankee, and the Dodgers won’t pay what he wants either, so I’m sure he will come down a bit just to wear the pinstripes. It is practically a done deal, amigo. Book it!

It’s the whole reason why they are staying under the tax line this year.
They want to reset the tax penalty so that when they go over next year, they don’t suffer the major penalties. That allows them to be aggressive in FA next year- maybe not all on stars, but on players who will fill holes. For example, new SS, improvement in the back of the rotation, etc.
