Shane Lemieux injury NOT season ending

Josh in the City : 7/30/2021 7:06 am
We’ll see how long he’s actually out but overall this is great news.

Per Raanan:

@jordanraanan
Worst case seems to have been avoided on this Shane Lemieux knee injury, per source. Sigh of relief for #Giants and their offensive line. He will undergo further evaluation over next few days but it’s not believed to be season-ending.

yay, an injury that will hamper a borderline player (OK, maybe that's a little overly cynical, but it's not like he's penciled in for the pro bowl) most of the season.

note: I have no idea of anything about the injury.

Yes he struggled in pass pro which is expected for a rookie.

What oddly doesnt get mentioned enough is he is a GREAT run blocker and immediately brought a new identity to the OLine (his play style reminds me of Seubert which I dont say lightly).

Big loss if hes unable to go.
He’s on the side working with trainers this morning

that a late round rookie from this years are an upgrade over last years rookies. The draft is about who is available at the time. I'm sure after the first two rounds, NFL teams are looking specifically for BPA.

There are other positions on the team.

The OL unit is, IMV, the most important unit in football. So you can never have enough good ones. Especially when your current unit has so many question marks and is essentially unproven.

I've said it quite a bit this off-season - banking on this unit to be the solution is the riskiest, biggest bet for '21.

I agree with you, it seems like a big risk for a young QB to have a very questionable offensive line. Releasing the best OL we had now seems pretty foolish but hey we saved a few dollars!

No one knows how the 2021 draft will play out. Toney may be a hall of fame talent but at this point Christian Darrisaw would have been a safer pick as Golliday and Rudolph signings up graded the receivers while the OL is very lacking in depth.

The potential for Solder is all over the map, but people acting like backup swing tackles in a league starved for even starters at the position, are really fooling themselves the type of quality they can expect there.

What potential are you talking about?

Nobody in the league is starving for a tackle like Solder, at least not any longer. And if they are then the front office should be soliciting offers right now...

What if they had a 2nd round grade on Darrisaw and a 1st round grade on Toney? And I disagree that there wasn't a big need at WR following their free agent moves. This is why they were all over Smith and Waddle in the draft and why the Eagles knew they had to trade ahead of them even if it meant dealing with the Cowboys.
p.s.--The Rudolph signing was more about the running game than the passing game so the argument can be made that his addition complemented their OL depth chart more than their WR depth chart.

Cam Fleming signed with Denver for $1.65M, Kelvin Beachum re-signed in Arizona for $2/4M.

Fleming, warts and all, didn’t sniff the horror that was Nate Solder in 2019.

Beachum was signed right before the season started last year, and was a solid if not spectacular plug and play lineman.

The Giants had every opportunity to move on from Solder, and instead decided to pay him $3M this year, when the last time he was on the field he was a deplorable football player.

If Nate Solder gets on the field and is an average player, it will be an absolute miracle.
Nate Solder was a horror show in 2019, I agree, but I'm of the
Zeke's Alibi : 7/30/2021 2:12 pm : link
persuasion it that there was a large mental compenent to that. I guarantee his focus wasn't on football, and at that level, you can't just go through the motions.

Who would you have went after this year? Fleming was arguably just as putrid, just not as obvious because he played on the right side. We know what Cam Fleming always has been, at least Solder has potential and have no issue giving him an extra million due to that. Lose a tackle in the NFL and you are going to struggle unless the rest of your line is strong, which ours probably won't based on the guard situation.
And I'm not buying that Beauchum was solid plug and play
Zeke's Alibi : 7/30/2021 2:18 pm : link
The Cards offensive line was putrid, and it's by design. I find what Kliff is doing intersting because with Murray and the design of his offense he's essentially saying OL position group is something he can get away with minimal resources, which is counter to everyone else in the NFL it seems. If he was what you'd describe him, he'd be looking to get paid. The NFL clearly disagrees with your assesment.

This is very true and that's saying a lot because it's been an offseason full of gambles. The offseason is one big poker game. Or more like two big poker games if you divide it up between free agency and the draft. You play your hand based on the cards that are dealt and the pot odds. Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn't. The Giants didn't go into the offseason thinking they were set at OL, but there were slim pickings in free agency and the draft simply didn't fall in a way that gave them good bang for their buck at OL. There draft board suggested better ROI at WR, ER, and CB and those were also positions of need.
p.s.--It's not as if the Giants don't have a plan at OL. The free agent additions of Fulton and Harrison and return of Solder gives them three veterans with starting experience backing up the projected starters and Gates's position flexibility means they can always have their best five healthy OL on the field. So it's not as if they're flying without a net. And you know damn well that the team's three OL coaches will be coaching the hell out of these guys. At least Gettleman didn't do to Judge what Accorsi did to Fassel in 2003 (when he took apart the OL that got them to the playoffs in 2002 and left them with an OL that had youngsters Dave Diehl, Chris Bober, Wayne Lucier, Ian Allen, Jeff Hatch, Scott Peters, and Jeff Roehl starting 64 games combined...and instead of adding TE depth in Kyle Rudolph to help the OL, he subtracted TE Dan Campbell and replaced him with a rookie pass-catching TE out of Morgan State who was forced into a starting role well ahead of time).

A sprained knee (for example) can be a relatively serious injury but doesn't require surgery. Recovery would take some time but It's July 30. If he's out 8 weeks he might return around week 4. That's not great but the season has become so long, this kind of thing is getting kind of normal.

He's 33 with a year off for his body to heal, which could mean he gives you halfway decent tackle play, which is pretty much unheard of for swing tackles unless they are recent draftees that way outplay their draft slot and turn into eventual starters. He's old, but not ancient, especially at a position where guys have been known to hang around because it's strength based.

There's something to a guy that's made as much money in his career and Superbowl rings, willing to come back for 3 million instead of retiring. He's out to prove something. I think a year off gives him better clarity than guys just holding on at the end of their career. He truly thinks he can still play. We shall see.

This whole angle really isn't discussed enough. 3 million is peanuts for a guy of his worth to go through the grind of an NFL season, it's all about perspective.
As far Lemiux goes, Judge made a comment that all the lineman

Agreed. They addressed OL big time last year. Whether you agree or not, all 3 draft picks are expected to start. As such, this year they addressed OL from a depth/backup perspective. It's not saying much, but this has a chance to be our best OL in almost a decade, regardless of how much they improve.

One reason I am encouraged by Lemieux is that he seemed to have the mental part of the game down. By that, I mean he seemed to be diagnosing the D properly and selectingtthe correct guy to block or switch to. That also may be attributed to Gates at OC making better calls. But, I feel like he got the hardest part down. Physically, he needs work. Some of thatbis coachable in terms of technique. Some, by getting stronger and maybe quicker.

There were a number of swing type tackles signed for less than 3M. Guys who've actually played acceptable football in recent memory.

Nate Solder hasn't played above replacement level football since 2017. He was bad in 2018 and an out right disaster in 2019.

I mentioned Fleming and Beachum. Dennis Kelly just signed with Green Bay this week for the vet minimum. Bobby Massie is another end of his rope guy making less.

I think Solder is a vet minimum type player. If he plays replacement level football this year it will be an extraordinary miracle.
Nate Solder PFF
shyster : 7/30/2021 4:41 pm : link
2014: 70.8
2015: 68.9
2016: 85.8
2017: 73.4
2018: 75.7
2019: 64.9

64.9 was better than any NYG 2020 starting OL's grade except for Zeitler's 65.9.

And yes, PFF knows about the sacks given up. Solder had 1011 snaps in 2019 and was credited with 11 sacks. You can put together a lowlight clip of those and make him look like the worst player in the world but there were 1000 other snaps.

That said, I have no idea how the year off will affect him and what version of Solder will be on the field in 2021.

Massie is making more than Solder and Kelly stinks. If it's a choice between Massie making 4 million coming off an injury and Solder having a year off making 3 million, I'm taking Solder, just becaue he's already in the building. Pretty much a toss up if they were both coming from outside.

31 out of 32. But that includes Shane Lemieux's 32 grade.

Five starters at 65 would probably put the ranking considerably higher.

It's not a great grade but it's not terrible either. Flowers was a 35 when he brought up the rear of the OT rankings while playing for the Giants.

Massie is making 2.3M, not 4.

What's your definition of "stink?"

Kelly, was an acceptable but unspectacular 16 game starter last year who didn't give up a single sack. He was a cap casualty, the Titans overpaid to keep Kelly when Conklin left. He's definitely a career back up kind of guy -- the exact type of guy you want as a swing tackle.

Solder gave up 11 sacks, had 56 pressures, and committed 4 holds last time he was on the field. He was brutal.

He’s making 4 million if he plays. If it’s like other play time incentives it’s probably like 70%.

The NFL thinks Kelley stinks, that much is clear. On paper he had his best year at 30. They were able to offset poor tackle play because of how great their interior line play was and setting everything off the run game with a very talented set of skill players.

All I can say sitting from my couch at home was the one weakness on Titans was clearly tackle play. They still were able to put up 30 pts a game.
It honestly kind of proves to the OL at any crowd cost, is that you merely need competent offensive line play to be a great offense.

I look at this the other way. While Isiah Thomas spoke of rebuild - he wasn't talking one year. As a result, he would have been drafting and looking to pick up "best player's available within reason" with an expectation it will take several years to start winning. You think he's just going to ignore some players for example that have a much higher ceiling and not take them because the year prior he drafted a player that struggled?

Further; Did you see the many threads and many posts on here from many stating the team is going to be at worst .500 and up to 12-4? The expectation is that the OL would be fine. They didn't have a regular full year - didn't play with NFL crowds etc-- yet there is pretty big expectation from many on here that they will have an automatic trajectory of not only being better but good enough to be a decent enough OL.

SO after 1 year their trajectory automatically goes up? Every single one of them? DO you really think Isiah Thomas felt the same way when he talking about a rebuild? He was referring to it would take years.

Thus your point of "impatience" is more directed at those that think the OL is fine. We certainly can be hopeful but that's about it. The expectations on here from many in the crowd have little to do with being patient. Though we all hope those that are very optimistic are right regardless of their impatient expectations/projections.

Adn mnay of these posters if asked about the OL- they would say thigns like "No camp." and "They are oyung, cna only get get better." etc.

To say not season ending means it was a very bad injury. I’m not hopeful. Then again, I’m not a big Lemieux fan and he’s clearly the weakest link on the offensive line

A sprained knee (for example) can be a relatively serious injury but doesn't require surgery. Recovery would take some time but It's July 30. If he's out 8 weeks he might return around week 4. That's not great but the season has become so long, this kind of thing is getting kind of normal.
Right. He could be out 2 months, come back, and still have to play 13 games.
