Black jerseys return tonight! Williams optioned to AAA. Baez will join team tomorrow. Tropeano and Bostick DFA’d. Reid Foley to 60 day IL to make room. LFGM!
Stroman-Walker-Carrasco-Megill-Hill and the Big BATS will have to get us to the postseason.
LGM!
Some of you are unbelievable with this crap. Walker has had poor outings the last three times he’s pitched. Probably because he’s pitched more innings this year than the last TWO years combined. And THATS actually in line with when he started struggling. He’s clearly hit a wall that the Mets are going to need to manage.
The four Walker starts AFTER the sticky stuff crackdown? 4 runs, 1 run, 2 runs, 2 runs. Sure, he’s really “stunk since the sticky stuff crackdown.”
Come on guys. Gimme a break.
Sucks
Mikey, so bad....I was hoping he'd hit into a DP just to get the run in!

defensively?
Yeah, as I was saying…

The Mets had their choice between Zach Davies and Trevor Williams in the trade with the Cubs. They viewed both largely as equal, so chose Williams because of his minor-league option.
Better off with Pillar and Fargas
6 years ago nobody could have predicted Cespedes would do what he did and the team would go to the WS. There's no way to predict what Baez will do now. I think we can appreciate that they added a player whose ceiling is really high in terms of what he can contribute if things go well. After the LAD did what they did they absolutely needed more talent and they got it.
Baez is a barely league average bat. He just isnt a good a hitter.
Sure defense at SS is nice while Lindor is out, a little speed is nice... he's just not that kind of guy that will carry us IMO.
Would love to be wrong...
We might have had a chance right now... Instead its a guaranteed loss.
JAG. NO longer the blossoming All Star outfielder
You know who else had a <5% walk rate, was super toolsy, and not the type of player the organization usually targeted? Yoenis Cespedes in 2015.

We've been through this. You're never going to convince me a guy with home runs and RBIs means something. You are great at twisting stats to suit your argument but OPS is OPS. You cant fudge it. You cant outrun it. You cant fake it. The guy leads all of baseball in strikeouts. Like he's number one. He's an all or nothing hitter and not a very good one...
Comparing him to players in the Mets lineup and ranking him when half the lineup was out to injuries for months and the other half is having career worse seasons also doesnt mean anything to me.
And I dont care about tools either. Thats shifting the argument to something else entirely. Yes, he's a good defensive SS. Yes he has speed. I dont give a damn about those things. We already have a gold glove SS and we already have a player playing a damn good second bas in McNeil. It just seems like a poor fit. If Lindor wasn't here it would have made more sense. I just dont love him as a hitter and I would have never given up PCA for what he brings to the table for 2 months.
If PCA is finished because of the surgery, Ill change my tune but I doubt he is. The Cubs wouldnt have traded for him if they thought he was.
Also in the last 3 full seasons prior to c19 (about 450 games between 2017-2019) Baez cumulative OPS was .850, so it's not like there's any question as to whether or not he's at his ceiling right now.
you can not care about tools all you want but there's a reason the phrase "5 tool player" exists and Baez is one of the true 5 tool players in the sport. In a year where things haven't clicked offensively they are taking a gamble on MVP upside and upgraded the defense in the process. They went bold and bold is what it will take to get through the LAD and win a WS.
And mostly due to the other top guys in the system having break out years dealing PCA was the lesser evil. We all figured a decent player might cost Vientos or Ginn. With the way they are playing would you prefer either of them was dealt over PCA? I definitely wouldn't have preferred dealing Vientos but I may have dealt Ginn (but that would depend a lot on what the drs say about each of them). And certainly not over Allan, Alvarez, Mauricio, Baty.
And it doesn't have anything to do with the trades yesterday.
This team could ill-afford to lose deGrom another month. And sorry, no, we don't lose a pitcher for two months bc of forearm tightness. There is something going on they haven't been truthful about from the beginning.
To me, deGrom is so critical ti both making the playoffs and having success in them. Losing him is monumental. And raise your hand if you have a lot of faith that he'll be 100% and ready to go in September. Me neither.
This is slowly turning into a lost season before our eyes. The continued absence of Lindor was already huge.
And Baez will go on a 2015 Cespedes like tear.
in the interim the issue is Walker seems to be hitting a wall and probably doesn't have too many innings left. Hopefully he can bridge them to 1 of the other 2 returning and then maybe shift into the pen.
If you break down August it's an interesting mix of opponents:
12 games vs. MIA + WAS (8 home)
10 games vs. LA + SFG (7 on the road)
3 games @ PHI next weekend
Need to win the series vs. PHI.
Need to go a few games over .500 vs. MIA/WAS
Survive the west coast.
They haven't announced probable starters but it looks like the PHI series next weekend lines up with Stroman, Megill, Walker while Philly lines up Gibson, Moore, Wheeler. We've said it a million times but the offense needs to take over this month - and that's where Baez has a chance to make a major impact until Lindor gets back. Even in a not great year he has been the more productive player season to date so just need to hold the line in August and hope JDG gets back for September.
We need to wake up the bats we have - if Conforto doesn't come around McNeil has experience in right and I agree Mike should should be a bench piece for a while - If you need to you bring Almora back to play center - but all we need is a .500 ball club to win the division. Once in the tournament... well since we're all Giants fans.... anything can happen.
As to Banda pitching the 9th - all our top starters pitched the final game against the Braves so fine - give them the night off and let Banda try to get three more outs in a game we're likely losing anyhow.
Starting pitching was and still is the need but we have a nice long BP that can definitely play to .500 ball
As to PCA - one of my favorites - No Doubt. But if you cant pull the trigger on trading a 19 year old kid who's currently out with surgery for Javy Baez - you shouldn't get the opportunity.
Last night it was the same as it has been all year - timely hitting. The first inning was a killer.
But I do absolutely believe we'll win the division - and then let's see what the healthy roster looks like. #LFGM
The Phillies' series is probably too optimistic.
In terms of starting pitching, the Mets line up now with:
Stroman
Carrasco
Walker
Megill
Hill
Williams
With Peterson, deGrom, and Syndergaard hopefully returning end of August or early September. Peterson may be a long shot for this season.
Just a shame we have so many games against the Dodgers and Giants left.
The Dodgers now have a super team.
which again is part of why it's kind of crazy that they actually managed to add a GG short stop who is having a better season offensively. For the month of August Baez could really be the difference between staying in first or not.
Pillar CF
Baez SS
Alonso 1B
J.D. Davis 3B
Dom LF
McCann C
McNeil 2B
Drury RF
Load up on the RH bats. McNeil too hot right now to take out of the lineup but I wouldn't be surprised to see Villar at 2B and leading off, either. I'd really like to see Drur with a start tonight.

I think Limdor gets only 2 games in 'Cuse before coming up.
Bobby V used to do that with Rick Reed and Al Leitrr. They both would come down with “injuries” in July and August.. then they would be miraculously healed when they came off the DL.
McNeil
Baez
Alonso
Dom
JDD
Conforto
McCann
Pillar
Dom, JDD, Conforto, McCann can probably go in any order. Would probably look at whoever has the best track record vs. Miley.

peterson is most likely done for the year after having foot surgery

Lindor can return that 2nd week of August, in time for that first series vs the Dodgers.

Probably, but they've at least opened up the possibility for a return sometime in September.
Rose-colored glasses? Probably. Still better than Eickoff.
One thing is for certain, if the Mets don't start hitting the way they are capable of, it's not going to matter who the starting pitcher is.
So it's basically Drury or Conforto. Drury is a nice weapon off the bench but he's earned a start so either way is fine. I do think Conforto's defense alone starts him with more value than Drury.
We all assumed it was "forearm tightness" as that was what was being reported.
Elbow issues are more dangerous.
Nevermind Peterson game him 23
