"C AUSTIN REITER

The NFL is always chasing dominance on the offensive line, but in truth, solidity is more important — it can lead to excellent value on players that don’t tick the boxes the league wants them to, particularly if they weren’t high draft picks.

This sums up Austin Reiter, a seventh-round draft pick by Washington back in 2015. He has been the starting center for the Kansas City Chiefs for the past two seasons and has never had an overall PFF grade worse than solid during his NFL career.

In a league continuing to trend ever-more pass happy, Reiter’s pass blocking has also been the stronger facet of his game, with three straight seasons of at least a 77.5 PFF grade in that area. Reiter will likely never be a superstar, but he is assuredly solid at a key pivot point along the offensive line and will be dramatically underrated because he isn’t a dominant force inside.

Some teams have endured sub-standard center play for years, and a player like Reiter would likely be a cheap but significant upgrade for them."
Hmmm - full year starter

for the 2019 Chiefs on Super Bowl team; know nothing about him.

I think the Giants
PEEJ : 7/31/2021 9:51 am : link
might be considering a replacement center and a move of Gates to guard
Discussed Reiter a couple of times before Free Agency started

as a potential go-get.

Gates stepped up last year but maybe Center can be filled without any drop off (or even improved) and then move Gates to Guard where the NYG need most help. Takes advantage of Gates' good versatility and puts a weaker starter on the bench. Win-win...
With all the talk, do we
Bill in UT : 7/31/2021 9:54 am : link
really know that Gates can play guard at a high level or are we just projecting?

Always looking for roster upgrade. At center, even if carried as backup at right price, plus provides flex on moving Gates if need arises. It’s a long season and JJ preaches versatility on the roster.

Would suggest we don't have any high level Guards playing now so lets find out...

Agree, and with the cite from PFF, fwiw, makes one wonder why he hasn't been picked up before now, by any team.
I think his run game sucks.

The Chiefs couldn't run for shit and I think the Chiefs were predominantly in the gun. Ideally, Gates stays at C and nails down that position for at least the next 5 years. But our guards are so bad right now that you have to explore all different options. Hell, I'd try Solder at OG too. He may play better in tight quarters. I know that limits our depth at OT but it is all a domino effect.
What’s interesting

Is that this injury to Lemieux shows exactly why Judge is big on versatility in terms of playing multiple positions.

I remember reading the morning that Lemieux got hurt that Judge had Gates playing some guard in practice.

It’s a rough game man, both the contact and non-contact aspects. The cutting, backpedaling, etc. on the non-contact side. The contact risks are obvious so no reason to list those.
with Harrison on PUP

and Lemuix scare our interior OL depth needs to be addressed

The points made about the position or not BS though I agree PFF is a little more than fluff.
Starting center on a Super Bowl team that can be had in August might just be the best thing that could have happened to the Giants this summer.

I also agree that if the coaching staff thinks it’s viable that Solder is available at G&T.

Hmm, Solder to OG. Does that really limit us? He can still be a swing tackle... hmmmmm... I wonder how he'd look at Guard? lol

I love the fact that Judge is into the multiples. It just makes so much sense.
6'8" OG?

Solder stays at tackle. Let's see how camp progresses. With a new OL coach they will experiment. I still think moving WH to RG may mean they like Lemieux more than most and that maybe there is something to moving Gates to RG and getting someone ready at Center.

They also added two UDFA's that I look forward to seeing how they do.

I doubt it would work. Being 6'8" is most likely way to tall for an OG. I made the argument in the past that Peart is probably too tall to play OG so the same should hold true for Solder. However, I am very unimpressed with our OG at the moment so why not give it a shot? It wouldn't be something that is ideal nor something I'd be in favor of if it weren't for our current situation. OG is the most worrisome position on the roster and I am not a fan of moving Gates to OG because you could weaken the center position and have issues at OG. I really liked what I saw from Gates last year. He had such a natural feel for the position and having his head on a swivel. I'd anchor down that spot and not worry about it.

I think Judge really likes Lemieux.

Reiter to Center, Gates to Right Guard, and Hernandez to Right Bench next to Solder...
You have to be careful with "rankings" when

.

I don't know many 6' 9" guards in the NFL, Solder will not
play guard in this league.
