Going into camp last season many fans were expecting Spencer Pulley to win the center job by default.
Now we have Gates entering his second season at center coming off an impressive first year there. The Giants also have experienced vets Harrison and Looney competing for the backup spot. The Giants tried to sign Looney last offseason to start at center but he decided to return to Dallas.
Both Harrison and Looney are big upgrades over Pulley.

But I was told the Giants didn’t do anything this offseason to improve the OL.

They've added bodies, but whether they've improved the level of talent remains to be seen. Clearly, they're banking on improvement from their second-year players under the tutelage of their new position coach(es) but, again, it remains to be seen if they will. I'm hopeful, but that's about it.

Not true at all. The Giants do something every offseason to improve the OL.

First of all the bodies they added were, in general, depth signings. If you don’t think the depth this year is improved over last year we’ll have to disagree about that. And if after spending 1st, 3rd and 5th round picks it’s somehow unreasonable to wait one year to see if they develop we will have to disagree about that as well. Though you are right that the jury is out to me it seems like a reasonable plan.

Depth is obviously important when injuries come calling, particularly if that depth is reasonably competent, albeit not as good as the starters.
However, if the starters aren't all that good to begin with, then having more depth isn't really helping much.
As you mentioned above, a lot is riding on those OL draft picks from a year ago developing into reliable starters under the new OL coach.

So true. A lot is riding on a lot of players developing into reliable starters. Isn’t that the key element of what it means to build a team. It’s not like they are hoping for a bunch of UDFAs developing into reliable starters.

I'm optimistic that the OL will be better (largely due to the 2nd year guys playing better), but marginally improving the backups isn't anything to toast. And Zeitler to Hernandez is likely a downgrade.
Giants need a lot of O-linemen in camp (guards and centers especially)
Then really work them to see who comes out on top. When you think about it, last year they played better than anyone should have expected. At least after the break, they knew each other’s names.

We won’t know if they’ve built a solid offensive line until the regular season begins but I don’t think there is any doubt that they’d Giants have improved the depth along the OL. The return of Solder plus the additions of Looney, Fulton, and Harrison along with a year of experience for Murphy is an improvement over last season.
I think we would all take Solder, Looney, Fulton, Harrison, and Murphy over Barton, Hernandez, Pulley, Slade, and Murphy.

It's just that it doesn't...
If the Giants find Fulton, Harrison, and Solder playing any significant time — I wouldn’t be patting myself on the back about improvements.
Looney is the player who provides the most versatility and has recently played on a line that wasn’t a disaster. I’m happy to call him an improvement.
