The Colts are going to throw the ball a million times when Wentz is not there to keep the snaps up so Wentz plays less than 70% of the overall snaps.

no chance the Eagles get that 1st now. I imagine Colts will be extra careful with him coming back. 5-12 weeks for foot surgery...zero chance he comes close to that 5 week timeline. 10-12 sounds more like it.
5-12 weeks
santacruzom : 8/2/2021 12:23 pm : link
is quite a wide time range.
Can't

stay healthy. I'm not saying it wasn't a worthwhile risk for the Colts to trade for him. He's had success, and you can't win in the NFL without a really good QB. But there were already a lot of warning signs regarding his health.

Sounds like they want to see what the Doc says after the surgery for a more definitive timeframe.

Now watch Foles to Colts

Sorry, this was assuming a low end obviously.
This can end up being really significant

in its impact on the 2022 draft. Between this and the Bears there are some interesting stories to keep track of this year.

So annoying how they got out of that contract

the return moving to a 2 helps, but really wish they were stuck with that cap hit. For a FO that’s been doing well these past few years Indy fucked this one up.

They needed a QB and Wentz wasn’t that costly, it was a total buy low situation. Reich knows Pederson wasn’t good at his job and is familiar with Wentz. He’s a very good QB when healthy and everything around him isn’t shit because he’s so keen on playing hero ball. Even with the injury issues, Wentz contract isn’t that bad. The Colts have a solid window with no QB. The Eagles essentially paid a ton of money for a 2nd and 3rd round pick.

I get it, but everyone saw this coming. Is there any shot its a 5 week injury? Doubtful. Is he going to keep getting injured like he has been? Probably. Would have been nice to still have him in Philly.
Titans should run away with the Division

For those interested and how it effects the draft.....
rasbutant : 8/2/2021 4:11 pm : link
As a reminder, there are two ways for that 2022 second-round pick to turn into a first-rounder for the Eagles:

1. Wentz played at least 75% of the Colts’ offense snaps

2. Wentz plays at least 70% of the Colts’ offensive snaps and the team makes the playoffs

The Colts averaged just under 68 offensive snaps per game in 2020, so if we project how many snaps they’ll play in 2021 based on a 17-game schedule, it comes out to roughly 1,156 total snaps.

Here’s where Wentz would be percentage-wise based on this average:

Misses one game: 94.1%

Misses two games: 88.2%

Misses three games: 82.4%

Misses four games: 76.8%

Misses five games: 70.6%

Misses six games: 64.7%

The Colts are a very well run organization. They know exactly what they are doing and I can almost guarantee you that they have some sort of plan in place to do everything they can to protect that 1st round pick. Missing some games will certainly help that now but I wouldn’t be surprised to see them using some “load management” with Wentz when he comes back. You know, to keep him healthy…

Throwing the ball a million times won't keep the snaps up if those throws don't result in first downs. On the other hand, nickel and diming their way down the field rather than going for the big play will help keep the snaps up. And good defense that forces a lot of three and outs (but is vulnerable to 50+ yard TD passes!) will also help with the offensive snaps.

Not necessarily. And it really doesn't matter how often they throw vs run. It's the percentage of all offensive snaps.

You may already in ow this. But then you have to consider how many offensive snaps a backup QB eill have in those games. If they pass a lot, does that mean more or less snaps? Will they be able to sustain drives? Will they be able to be somewhat equitable in time of possession vs the opponent?

If Wentz misses 5 games, there's a chance he doesn't meet 70% in snaps, but it's still likely he does. When Wentz comes back they probably are more efficient on offense. Efficiency = more offensive snaps.

7 games and it's a lock. 6 games there's a really good chance. 5 games? More of a speculative maybe.
Wentz is one of these guys who always gets blasted
widmerseyebrow : 8/3/2021 10:53 am : link
whenever he runs. I have no idea how he got hurt this time, just a general observation. Some guys have no anticipation for when they're about to get tackled and get hit way more violently than they should. That's Wentz.

The Colts have a brutal schedule to start the year. I think their first five are against +.500 teams.
Colts first 7 of 8 games are brutal...
bw in dc : 8/3/2021 11:58 am : link
Seattle, Rams, at Tennessee, at Miami, at Baltimore, Texans, at San Fran, Tennessee.

Even with Wentz, I think it would be a good record to be at .500 after those eight weeks...

Philly ate $33m of the contract, so it isn't that bad of contract for the Colts. They could can cut him after one year and still get cap savings. Plus with his history with Reich, there were hopes he could revive Wentz's career.
