NGT: Philly making CAP room...

rasbutant : 8/3/2021 9:24 pm
Good to see them kicking the can down the road I guess?

Aug 3

Lane Johnson, RT

Converted $8.49M of 2021 salary into bonus, clearing $6.79M of cap space with Philadelphia (PHI)

Derek Barnett, DE

Converted $9.061M of 2021 salary into bonus, clearing $7.24M of cap space with Philadelphia (PHI)
Why are they clearing so much room?

Is a big move on the way?
Would have to be a trade right?

They’ve been linked to Watson in the past few weeks.

Restructures push money into future years, it doesn’t just disappear creating cap room that they can carry over
Rodgers I’d be pissed about

Watson not so much, he’s very beatable and don’t trust his baggage anyway. If that were it though I hope it’s not for yet another ridiculous discount.
OTC with more info....

I know people's first thoughts are going to be about QB

But my first thought was Xavien Howard. But it could also just be a buffer for the season.
More cap room for 2022

That's the play for them.

If that truly were the play for them, I would have to assume they'd be better off making the restructures next year instead of now. Because even though they can create cap room that rolls over if unused, they're also pushing cap cost (and liability) into next year as part of the process to do so.

There's often value in rolling some existing unused cap space forward, but it's not common to restructure contracts a year in advance specifically for the purpose of creating unused rollover.

I think this quote from the article says it
Quote:
The Eagles had approximately $2 million in cap room so most likely these moves are designed to give them breathing room for the regular season and additional carryover to 2022 where they are currently projected to be around just $3 million under the cap.

I still believe this year is a complete tank job by Philly. If Hurts is anything, it's a bonus for them, else, they are here to lose and lose a lot in 2021 and setting up for lots of picks in 2022 looking to start their turn around next year. They had only $3M in cap space in 2022, so they are getting ahead of it. As I have said on other posts, the Giants should beat the crap out of them this year and we should all enjoy it, because it doesn't happen that often.
Those are some healthy restructurings.
