Cornerback James Bradberry

August 27, 2021

Q: Are you mad about dropping that pick yesterday?

A: Yeah, I was pretty upset. I should have caught it.

Q: You were right there, right?

A: I’ve got to come down with those.

Q: Even in practice, you’re kind of like that.

A: You want to practice like you play, so of course I want to catch every ball that comes my way.

Q: The starters are getting an extended run on Sunday, are you excited to actually get out there?

A: Yeah, definitely. I mean, the season’s approaching, it’s right around the corner. We definitely want to get back in the feel of having fans out there, because we didn’t have fans last year. Just get a feel for actual game day, get in a routine and what not.

Q: After making the Pro Bowl last year for the first time and kind of having a breakthrough year, do you have any personal goals that you would share? Do you want to be a first-team All-Pro – I’m curious how you look at building off a great year.

A: I just look at it as I want to make more plays than I did last year. The accolades and the accomplishments and stuff they’ll come if I make more plays. So, just make more plays than I did last year.

Q: Is it different building off a great year than building off a good year?

A: No, you’ve really got to do the same. You’ve got to look back at your film and see what you did wrong. You always want to make improvements because the game’s going to change every year. People are going to watch more film on you every year, and they’re going to start to learn you and they’ll learn your tendencies and stuff. You just want to switch it up sometimes and just correct your mistakes.

Q: We’ve talked a lot about how (Cornerback) Adoree’ (Jackson) being here would help you just in terms of having another solidified corner on the outside and now here he is hurt, and you guys are back to what you had last year basically a revolving door opposite you. If that’s how you have to go forward through the season, not saying you do, we don’t know – but if that’s how you have to go forward to start the season with Adoree’ on the sidelines, what happens?

A: I’m confident in whoever they put out there. I was confident last year in whoever they put out there, so I’m going to be confident this year. My job is to play well, but also help the guy that I’m playing beside whether he’s a young guy or a veteran. I’m going to try to help whoever they put out there.

Q: I’m trying to put myself in (Broncos Quarterback) Teddy Bridgewater or whoever the opposing guy is, like I can throw the ball at James Bradberry, who made a Pro Bowl and is really good, or I can throw it at this untested guy. I feel you’re going to have less opportunities then…

A: I think we do a good job of putting together a game plan for the game week. We try to do a good job helping each other out. Whatever I see on film – I watch a lot of film, so whatever I see on film, I’m going to try to tell the other guy that’s playing opposite me so they can make plays as well. We’re not really worried about what he’s going to see. We’re worried about what we’re going to do on the defense, honestly.

Q: What do you think of (Cornerback) Sam Beal and how he’s come in this year? He’s one of the guys that kind of has a big opportunity Sunday to try and show something?

A: He’s making improvements every day and that’s all you can ask of a young guy in the league, make improvements every day, get better with every rep. I think he’s doing a good job of doing that. (He’s) continually learning and just stacking those days up.

Q: What about (Defensive Back) Keion Crossen? What do you know about him after he just got here?

A: Speed. I was watching him on kickoff the other day, he’s got a lot of speed.

Q: If this defense is healthy, do you think this group has a chance to be a very high-level defense?

A: I think we have the ability to do whatever we want to accomplish. We’ve just got to take it one day at a time. It’s kind of hard to deal with hypotheticals because injuries happen in this league. Honestly, mistakes happen in this league, so you just want to take it one day at a time and build days upon days and get better every day.

Q: Being with the same organization for the next year, does that make it easier for you just in terms of confidence and in terms of knowing everything?

A: Definitely. Last year it was a new scheme, new defense. This year I’ve got one year up under my belt, so I definitely feel more comfortable in the organization, in the defense and around my peers.

Q: I don’t know if you saw, but the Broncos named Teddy the starter for Week 1 over (Broncos Quarterback) Drew Lock, does it help you at all to know who the starter is versus finding out a couple of days before the game? Or have you not even looked at Broncos film yet?

A: Honestly, we’ve been worried about the Patriots because that’s our next opponent, so we really haven’t watched the Denver Broncos play. But I know about Teddy Bridgewater because I know he played in Carolina last year. I know he was a good quarterback for them, and he was a good quarterback before then, as well. Either guy, whoever lines up, we’re going to be ready for.

Q: What did you think of (Patriots Quarterback) Mac Jones?

A: I thought he was a good quarterback. He had a strong arm. The deep ball he threw, I think it was the first day, that was a pretty good ball. Even the deep ball he threw when I got double-moved was a really good placed ball. I feel like he’s got some really good accuracy, good touch, good quarterback.

Q: The one you knocked out?

A: Yeah, he put it on the money. Thankfully I’ve got long arms, you know?

Q: Have you stayed in touch with (Patriots Quarterback) Cam Newton at all?

A: Not really. I think we support each from afar. Of course, we were on two different sides of the ball when we were in Carolina. Of course, we also had a gap in between our ages when I came into the league. But we’re cool. I spoke to him when I was out there, said what’s up and we talked a little bit.

Q: Have you ever run a hill before the other day?

A: Man, I haven’t ran a hill in quite a bit time. So that hill, I’m not going to say it was a small hill because I don’t want (Head) Coach (Joe) Judge to think it was a small hill (laughs), but it was definitely not the steepest hill I’ve run in my life.

Q: You sound supremely confident, but how do you protect yourself from getting cocky?

A: Oh, I don’t know. I guess, I’ve just got to keep the mindset and always remember where you came from.
I like watching the videos of these interviews when possible

But I'd never seen one of Bradberry until now. I always dig players who listen thoughtfully to a question, don't answer with a platitude, and exude a sense of humor even when they're not trying to be funny. He fits the bill.
