to go with Mac Jones, Cam looks pretty cooked, but definitely surprised at the cut. I guess I shouldn’t be, why pay him starter money to sit? I’m not sold on Mac Jones, but it will be interesting to see how he does.

Cam wasn't getting anything close to 'starter money'. Even if he hit every incentive, he was only getting ~$10M.

more people aren't talking the vaccine and the role it played in this decision.
Personally, I can't help but think of Colin Kaepernick. He undoubtedly had enough talent to be in the league when he made his political stance, but the distraction/disruption was perceived to outweigh the talent.
I would imagine BB is making a similar calculation here. If Cam is unvaccinated and likely to be the backup, the potential disruption to the team outweighs whatever benefit he would bring to it. See ya.

They are a number of larger factors behind not wanting Newton as a backup QB:
1. He is accomplished. You don't want the calls for Newton should Jones struggle
2. He's getting paid $5 million. Not sure how much of the other $3.5 million they save, but $1.5 million was per game roster bonuses.
3. His arm is toast and he is just not good anymore.

Cam had the virus already. would have less chance to spread than even vaccinated. The NFL/Patriots may have their reasons to discriminate here, but I doubt it. Cam is not good anymore. I think that's all it is.
Has shown a bias for his former Panthers players and Mara/Judge have a relationship with BB. I don’t think they will sign him but I can see them kicking the tires if he’s willing to be the backup/mentor. I could see Cam wanting to play/live in NY
The fact they couldn't even get a 7th rounder in future years
the Patriots didn't attempt to try and trade him. They did him a courtesy by releasing him and letting him select his own next potential destination.
I actually think Cam may still be able to produce in the right situation, maybe even as a backup here, but I don't fault the Patriots for cutting bait. Mac Jones looked pretty good in the preseason, and that team isn't likely going to be competing for much this year. Makes sense to go ahead with Mac, rather than drag this out.

I don't know about that at all. They have a terrific OL, a very good stable of RBs, a good overall defense (Hightower returning is huge), a great secondary, and the GOAT HC.
I think they are right in the mix for a playoff spot...
"On this week's 'Funky Friday,' I have a lot of things that I need to get off my chest," Newton said. "This is not a retirement speech, and I have a lot of football still in me."
The Patriots cut Newton last week while handing the starting quarterback job to rookie Mac Jones.
Newton missed time during training camp after a miscommunication regarding COVID-19 protocols forced him to isolate for five days due to being unvaccinated. In the aftermath of Newton's release, Coach Bill Belichick said that the QB's vaccination status did not play a role in the decision.
Obvious potential landing spots for Newton in 2021 aren't clear at this point. Since his release, both Washington and Dallas have said that they didn't plan to consider adding the veteran. If the 2015 NFL MVP is to play this year, he might have to wait for an injury to strike down a QB to open an opportunity.
as of right now, there's only one active quarterback on the roster: Mac Jones since they released Newton and Hoyer, while Stidham is currently on the PUP list. If he goes down, the Patriots are in trouble unless they can call up a quarterback like Dorothy and her ruby slippers.
The Patriots must have a lot of faith that (Mac) Jones can stay healthy, or in their offensive line that they'll be able to keep Jones upright.
Cam to Baltimore as backup for Jackson? Cam to GB to back up Rodgers as Love isn't ready.
Guess you didn't watch the game Sunday night? Cripes...
Far easier to have Hoyer as the backup.
Brian Hoyer
Quote:
who is the backup in NE? I agree that Newton will find a home, albeit as a backup.
Brian Hoyer
Thanks.
Far easier to have Hoyer as the backup.
Agreed.

I’m not the biggest Glennon fan, but Cam looks completely cooked. His arm is shot. I suspect he’ll try to land somewhere, but in the end will retire.

Very true, but still a lot to pay a backup.

Bingo
Jones, if given enough protection, can.
I think he looked like crap in the game. He is cooked.
I am sure Cam still thinks he can start somewhere.

Now 5-1, so good job.

because of how different the offense is when he's in.

Bingo
Plus I can't help but wonder if Cam asked for this rather than being a backup

I don't know if that's true anymore. His body has fallen apart since he went vegan.
Baltimore would be the only team that I think would look at him as a veteran backup, but I'm not sure where the value would be.
While he may be able to perform as a serviceable backup, his personality is going to make it difficult to find any sort of landing spot.

Remember watching that live & friend going, 'He didn't even go for it!' I was like, 'Relax. He tried.' Then I saw the replay...buddy was 100% right.
