He was our defensive line coach for 2016–2017 and was not retained when Shurmur took over. So he didn’t leave to pursue other options, he was let go by the new coaching staff. The reason I bring it up is because I believe him when he says this is his dream job. He left the Patriots in a parallel move to come to a sucky Giants franchise after winning a super bowl in New England. After hearing his story about how Judge basically forcing him to talk to him when he sat next to him I think we have something special here.
Sort of like a Tom Moore with the Colts or a Jim Johnson with the Eagles. A coach who really enjoys being a coordinator and has no aspiration to be a head coach.
He said this is his dream job and he works for one of his best friends and I think this is potentially an awesome situation for our coaching staff’s continuity.
I hope Graham stays here for a long long time.
Unrelated, but did you all see how much weight this guy lost since last season? I just saw a before and after picture, and it's unreal...and good for him.
As a Head Coach, you aren't in charge of the offense or defense anymore. That's not for everyone. A highly paid Defensive Coordinator under a secure Head Coach who you like working for is a great situation.
Now, how long can we hold onto Sean Spencer before he's gathered interest elsewhere? I'm wondering what percent of defensive success should be allocated to the job he's doing with the DL. My impression is that he is very effective and highly regarded, at least by the players.
I can see him leaving for a big payday
Too, you’re in charge of a portion of the team with very little pressure COMPARED to a HC, though the job of coordinator is far from a piece of cake.
But didn't we tack on assistant HC?
Second, he has a history here. He wants to help Judge get things right here. Afterwards he will be in a position to hook up with a quality organization and have a long time gig as HC.
Quote:
Graham came to us from Miami. Flores let him leave for a lateral move.
But didn't we tack on assistant HC?
That's a meaningless distinction in terms of hiring a coach from another team. The NFL only recognizes two levels: head coach and assistant coach. You can hire any assistant for a head coaching job, but if an assistant is under contract, his current team must grant permission to leave for another assistant position, regardless of whether it represents a promotion or not.
