TNF Cowboys At Buccaneers Discussion Thread

Let's get the season kicked off right with an asswooping of the hated Cowboys by the Buccaneers.

Bucs 31 - Cowboys 17

How bout dem Cowboys

But i hope Dak doesn’t get injured again. He’s a nice guy.

About what college Brady went to 20 years ago
I am suddenly concerned...
Grizz99 : 9/9/2021 8:27 pm : link
Ithoughtthey were done....overdone and still borne.
Dak, I thought, was not a forty million dollar a year qb and forty million dollar QB's can't win with that burden cutting into supporting players.
I laughed at the folly of drafting J. Smith at the beginning of the second round. 50 - 50 he'd never be whole and if he was three of the years where he could be had cheap were wasted.
Earlier today I watched a Baldy narratted clip of Micah Pearson's and then I scoured the internet looking to contradict Baldy's very positive assessment.
Wow.
In the clips the kid is running with WR's, throwing a TE away like trash, throwing aside a double team, and in another manhandling a center.
If so, and if Gregory and J. Smith are on board, maybe they suddenly, and in spite of themselves, have a defense.
It also forced a confrontation with myself. I am worried that I am starting to care less that the Cowboys might be a threat than I am that it potentially gives ammunition to the Yowlers and set off another round of their gruesome and unfair criticism.

Breeze_94 : 9/9/2021 10:19 pm : link
A flawed team to me. They’re going to have to win a lot of 37-34 type of games if they are going to be a playoff team.

The secondary is Swiss cheese and they don’t have much of a pass rush. The middle of the Dline is also weak. The linebackers are even a question as Jaylon Smith/Vander Esch are more name than substance, and Parsons is a rookie running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

Offensively, Daks outstanding IMO. Top 10 QB. Receivers are good. But I’m not sure they have that same running game that helped keep the defense off the field in the Garrett era. Oline is not what it once was either after injuries and the retirement of Frederick.

I am very confident that the Giants are better than Dallas
Dak
DavidinBMNY : 9/9/2021 10:21 pm : link
Is throwing a ton. I thought they’d manage this a bit more. Looks good on the short throws. Not so much on the passes out to the flats.

Brady us amazing, but Tampa’s defense looks pretty weak, the rookie pash rusher Tyron needs more snaps.

How can we be watching the same game? The Bucs defense is one of the best in the league. Dallas offense has looked great. Dak has been moving the chains and their receivers are getting open or making big catches. We better hope this improved secondary executes.

And, their offensive line running backs actually know pass pro.

i disagree. i feel MUCH better about the chances after watching this game. dallas is seriously flawed and they wont be able to pitch and catch as easily against our secondary. bucs secondary is seriously weak especially since bunting will most likely miss time.

cowboys are absolutely beatable. they are poorly coached too. NOBODY on that defense scares me at all

I agree. The Cowboys can't run the ball and can't play D. They have gotten all the turnovers and breaks, yet are still behind. Plus their coach sucks. I'm not impressed. [/quote

How can we be watching the same game? The Bucs defense is one of the best in the league. Dallas offense has looked great. Dak has been moving the chains and their receivers are getting open or making big catches. We better hope this improved secondary executes.

And, their offensive line running backs actually know pass pro.

That was such an obvious OPI, and I fucking LOVE IT. I wish the Cowboys would lose on a blown call every fucking week, it's fantastic.

Watched the game with my 2 best friends from HS who are cowboys fans -- it'd be amazing if they could just consistently lose like that.

for the record, I think Dez caught it also -- not that it matters, since the zebras waived it off!

LOL anything to make it more painful for dallas fans, particularly those who were born and bred in the northeast.

btw, Dak is def gonna throw for like 5,000+ yards this year Zeke looks pretty cooked, their WRs are too good, and apparently Dak's "new throwing motion" isn't an issue at all

Here's to more games of the Cowboys losing shootouts on the back of their shit defense and blown calls!

be a huge blow up later when reality sets in. Dallas had 4, 4 TB turnovers, 2 deep in TB territory that led to points and 1 turnover deep in their own end that prevented 7pts for the Bucs and what probably would have ended the game. This game was in their hands and they lost. The truth is TB squandered many opportunities and provided Dallas with opportunities and points.

If Dallas comes out a bit flat next week and loses again, you could see the season unravel for the Boys quickly..

I mean it's pretty clear to anyone with eyeballs that Dak is, at worst, a top 10 QB, definitely top 7, and potentially top 5.

But this is the same board that bitches when Daniel Jones is ranked around 23 out of 32, so what do you expect?

Dak is an awesome QB, as was Romo. Hopefully he holds up Romo's legacy of choking in big spots and prevents the Cowboys from ever actually getting close to the promised land. But holy shit, if the Giants got a QB like that in the 4th round, I'd be beyond ecstatic.

Yet I guarantee someone will reply to this post and say that Dak isn't good and Jones is better.

JFC, take the blue colored glasses off. I'd kill for Dak to be the Giants QB instead of DJ, and if you say you disagree, you're only lying to yourself.

It doesn't make you a bad fan to be objective. FFS, where is Go Terps when you need him? I didn't agree with him about a lot of shit (aka trading OBJ, which I guess I was wrong about) but at least he doesn't try to talk himself into what he wants to believe, as if talking himself into it will make it more likely to happen.

Dak is absolutely a top QB in this league, it really isn't very debatable.

Rick in Dallas, I thought I remembered your username as a Giants fan and not someone like EaglesFanDan or that Niners guy, but was just covering my bases, just in case lol

what is pathetic, lol? Dak is better than Jones (RIGHT NOW), he was a 4th round pick and Jones was 6th overall, and he is just a much better QB.

I don't get what's pathetic. Do you think that's a different thought than pretty much every Giants fan who was watching the game at a bar tonight had?

The fact that most of BBI can't admit that Dak is a better QB than Jones just drives home how infantile this board is. It's way more pathetic that you somehow took that innocuous post so personally that you called someone ELSE pathetic.

Let's get it out in the open people -- Dak is a better QB than Daniel Jones right now, and unless DJ really takes a leap, it's looking like it will always be that way.

The beauty is that you don't always need the best QB to win. Eli beat Aaron Rodgers in '11, and Aaron Rodgers is clearly a better QB than Eli.

I didn't put Top 5 on it, but he's very obviously in the top 3rd of QBs in the league, and I really don't think that's debatable in the slighest. So he's 12 or above, and I'd put him in the 7-8 range.

Brady
Mahomes
Rodgers
Allen (based off last year)
Jackson (maybe? play style matters in this case)
Wilson

Then who? Herbert? Needs to prove it again. Tannehill? Watson (not playing)? Kyler? Then of course, Burrow, Baker

I'd take Dak over all of the QBs in the previous sentence, other than Herbert, or Burrow if he can come show that he's come back from injury.

I think Dak is a safe bet for Top 8 QB, at least right now. Maybe Baker, Kyler, or Burrow take a massive leap, but the guy is a damn good QB and I'd be very souped if he was a Giant

What a fucking legend. He’s gonna win two in a row in his sleep at this point, this shit was practice for them and they still handled an aggressive Dallas team when everyone was sloppy.

It won’t be the Packers that take them down even if Rodgers wins another beating the team that beats the Bucs. The Rams or Chiefs with Mahomes going God mode are the Only two teams that can mess with a fully healthy and focused Bucs team.

Antonio Brown is about to murder teams. Mike Evans/Gronk as the #3/#4 targets when they’re two of the top 10 or better RZ receivers in the league is a joke.

I agree and there is only a handful of teams that would rather keep what they have over dak . That being said let’s see how dak does when that aging oline starts showing there wear and tear again. Then there’s that defense. It’s not far fetched to say this is probably as sloppy as you will see the tampa offense this year and they still put up 31 including a page out of our old playbook letting them walk down the field at the end like a hot knife through butter. I don’t know any qb that can overcome that obstacle more than the others consistently.

On a side note tampa seems to me like a number of them has been reading a little too much of their own press. I can see old tommy boy going off on them sometime sooner than later which with as much talent that they have would probably be a bad thing for the rest of the league
What made Dak great was that he was a 4th Rder
George from PA : 9/10/2021 4:02 am : link
@40+ million.....he puts Dallas in a very tough spot.

He has a great OL,,,aging but still great. Top talent on offense.....but nothing special on defense....

And probably can not afford enough to ever get a championship team.

It doesn't matter if Dak is top 10 or even top 5....if he can not over come the Cowboys short comings...they will never win a championship....which is all that matters.

Last night was gifted to the Cowboys....but yet they lost.

Very admirable game by Dak, but still a loss. I also think....The Giants can beat them...which is all that matters
Great game and nice Dallas loss
dabru : 9/10/2021 4:04 am : link
Dak looked really good but he also has the pieces around him. Dallas D, not so much. Basically what was expected.

The bucs didn’t run the ball enough to minimize the amount of possessions, I suppose when you have Brady it’s not as big an issue but I hope the Giants pound on that D this year.

Who cares what round dak or Jones was drafted, it is pretty meaningless- dak is making top tier qb money and Jones is on rookie contract.

Last night, Dak Prescott had no run game, yet he passed for over 400 yards, completing over 70% of his passes. That's a little more than just managing the offense.

The Giants secondary is way, way better than Dallas' and the Bucs', but I can say this right now: I am not looking forward to playing against Dak Prescott this season.

This is very true - Dallas could not get the ball into the end zone despite several chances well inside the red zone. They should have had 50 points.

Nobody said Dak had a bad game, but he did not get the team into the endzone when he had several chances more than Brady. They had 3 FGs and missed 1.(I will not count the 60 yarder). Failing to get into the EZ is one of your criticisms of Jones.
He completed 10 more passes for only 12 more yards. YPA was less than Brady's - another criticism.

I like Dak a lot more than most. I think BBI grossly under rates him.

Dak played very well last night against a weak TB secondary
joe48 : 9/10/2021 7:07 am : link
He has always had very good pieces around him which has allowed him to develop into the QB he is in his 6th year. What I like about Dak is that he is real competitor. Problem for Cowboys is they have so much money invested in their offense defense suffers. Bucs tried to give this game away and werelucky to have Brady. Dallas has flaws. You don’t win many games throwing 56 passes. Our defense matches up well . The offense needs to pick it up. Jones is not at Dak’s level and this year we should see major improvement or look for another QB . Jones and Garret need to figure it out.

Brady had a couple of pretty egregious drops from his receivers as well, as well as two absolute fingernail pass defenses which in one case stopped an almost certain TD.

I actually thought Tampa's offense was pretty sloppy last night. The Cowboys D looks like it can neither stop the run nor cover the perimeter particularly well.

especially with the almost year off and no training game. Kellen Moore called a nice game. One thing I noticed is that Zeke seems to have lost power. Martin was out and he is their best run blocking lineman.

Throwing 45-50 times a game is a lot of pressure on Dak. The good thing is if healthy the Giants match up well and you can see why they added the defensive pieces they did. Dallas will get their yards but the key is to make them kick field goals and get a turnover over or two.

Dallas is a team the Giants can beat. Most knew they had the chance to be a very good offense and a big question is whether the OL would stay healthy. Let's see how Martin recovers from Covid.

The Dallas offense looked really good most of the game. Their Defense was just ok but did do a great job capitalizing on TB mistakes.

TB looked like they thought they were going to have it easy and their defense was decent but blitzed way too much. Vea is a beast. Without his effort TB loses that game.

It is going to be interesting to see how our offense does against Dallas' defense and how our run game fares verses their fast LBers.

Ideally, I think you need to be 7.5+.

I don't know what Dak's A/YA was last night yet. That incorporates TDs and INTs.

But when you throw 58X versus running the ball only 18X (and Dak has three of those), I don't know what is an acceptable YPA when you get to passing attempts that high. Essentially, Dallas used a lot of underneath stuff as their running game.

For the uninformed, the higher the better. Hmmmmm.

Dak, 6.9 YPA..What is the so-called acceptable standard for ypa? Asking for a friend..

Which is why using YPA and QBR is a flawed way of looking at things because the QB actually has the simple job of making a quick throw - its up to the RB or WR to get the yards to extend the plays.

But hey I love all the over hype reaction. Just like Steven A would say the bigger the setup the bigger the fall for Dallas. They look liked the same exact team, A high volume QB that will get a lot of empty calories but will fall short just like Romo. And that Defense is garbage...

to discount his play because of a particular stat that you want to give somebody crap about, or because you are indirectly (indirectly) trying to defend Daniel Jones from his critics.

Watch the game with your eyes and assess Dak's play. He was tough, accurate, decisive, productive from start to finish and, most importantly, he put his team ahead with a minute to go in the game. If you look at him objectively, its near impossible to say he didn't play very good last night and is one of the top QBs in the league.

You would need to be chucklehead to suggest otherwise...

Wherever people want to rank Dak and what they think of him is similar to when Romo was there. Dallas is going to be a major pain in the ass to deal with offensively and they are going score points

The Giants are not going to beat Dallas scoring 20-24 points.

As they showed last night though, it is difficult settling for FG's and winning

Anyone else sad watching JPP?
ShockNRoll : 9/10/2021 8:21 am : link
Just watching him last night, getting the better of Tyron Smith (in my opinion), for most of the night, it's depressing to watch this player who carried our defense to a championship a decade ago, continue to be one of the most disruptive defensive players in the game. No one figured he would ever play the way he has the past couple years again, so I'm not gonna kill Gettleman on this one, but with the return being Billy Price (after the Hill trade and Lauletta having been off the roster for years), it's just unfortunate to be on the absolute losing side of this trade.

That said, I'm happy for JPP. Guy's career should have been over on 7/4/15, and not only did he make it back into the NFL, he's got himself another ring and has a real shot at yet another.

I agree 100% with this. I have always been someone to knock Dak, but every year it gets harder and harder to see him as anything other than a top 10 QB. Yes, you can say he's always had an elite OL, Zeke, weapons all over the field, but every successful QB has a system/personnel around them that fits with their skill set. Are we going to discount Jones this year if he has a 4,500 yard, 30 TD season because the Giants brought in Golladay, Rudolph, Toney, and get Barkley back? Absolutely not, we'll say he finally had the pieces around him to succeed (OL not withstanding).

Shock, +1000. I've largely been in Gettleman's camp and like the team he's built, but I just can't make sense of letting JPP go.

We'll hear everything from "he's in FLA" as to the reason he's playing well, to "he was a cancer" here.

The bottom line is he's a dominant football player, just like he was here. And it would be great if we still had him. Imagine having JPP next to Leonard Williams & Dexter Lawrence?

The ironic thing is, he's pretty much the missing piece to us having a great D now.

he was paid a lot and didn't produce much for the last few years. We were a bad team. Paying an aging vet a lot of money while you are rebuilding doesn't make sense.

He gets traded and then winds up with Tom Brady and the all star team on offense - is it any shock why he'd start to play better and harder?

In sum, the JPP you see wouldn't likely be the one we'd have for us. Maybe the Graham factor changes that but he wasn't here when JPP was traded.

Top QBs win big games. And if Brady, Rodgers, Mahomes, etc... had the ball at the end of the game - their clock mangament wouldnt let Brady get the ball back. See Brady use the clock to his advantage last night? Lets not forget the awful sack Dak took at the end of the first half before a holding penalty to take the mout of field goal range. They had the chance to take the lead or be within a FG of the lead, and got the ball tostart the 2nd half - and he failed.

Dak was fine last night. He played well, and did what he had to do to win the game. But people thinking that was some kind of great or elite performance are just wanting to prop other players to push down the ones they root for.

There are things I disagree with, and others I agree with here. 2015 was a lost year and just a miracle he even made it on the field for 8 games. 2016 he had 7 sacks through 12 games and was a big part of the Giants defense being one of the best in the league, then he followed it up with 8.5 sacks in 2017 on a terrible team that fell apart.

That said, I believe you are right in some of the intangible elements of his game and the dynamics within the team at that point in time. That's why I stated I don't really blame Gettleman for this one. It's just frustrating for me that the Giants had the patience with this player, gave him a second chance after his incident, and worked him back into being a solid player, to see him have a total rebirth on another team.

Good discussion. JPP is an interesting case study. He’s the type of player typically that you would think would be a Giant his whole career and the team wouldn’t sell away. I think a big part of why it happened can be attributed to the poor leadership we had here in this organization at that time. McAdoo and Shurmer didn’t really run programs that held players accountable, JPP is a guy with a sort of goofy personality, I think the Giants didn’t really see him as a leader and worth the money for how broken this team was at the time when leadership was the biggest thing missing.

I am happy fir him that he has had a resurgence in Tampa. I think he found the perfect place, close to his home, and he fits in with that teams philosophy and coaching staff perfectly. Shame he couldn’t remain a Giant for life, but it just didn’t pan out with our down years. It’s disappointing a bit, almost as disappointing as how much this organization wasted Eli’s years after those Super Bowls with poor roster management, etc. It is what it is, happens to every team over certain periods.

I totally agree that winning big games should be part of that calculus for the great QBs. And Dak needs to represent he can before getting a great or elite designation.

He is still one of the top QBs in the league, and some of that is because there are only a few elite ones.

Last night was a big game, and when he left the field for the night he put his team ahead with both a 4QTR Comeback and a Game Winning Drive.

Unfortunately for Dak, the other team had one of those elite guys at QB that flipped those to himself...

Lauletta should not be included as a return for JPP since the Giants actually got a worse fourth round pick in the swap that was part of the overall trade.

That said, there were a number of players who went in the third round after Giants picked B.J. Hill who would have made that trade look a whole lot better (Orlando Brown, Mark Andrews, Michael Gallup, Sam Hubbard).

Real problem was in executing that pick.

For me the DAL OL is the key
Jim in Forest Hills : 9/10/2021 9:10 am : link
they are looking much, much better. Once Martin comes back, the running game will improve and they will score a ton of points. What Collinsworth said struck me, they want to run the ball and have explosive plays. That OL is healthy will let them do that.

Defensively, they don't look much better, I think they really miss not getting one of the top 2 corners. I think it will be the achilles heel for them this year and I predict they will make a trade to shore that up.

Watching them last night, I dont have a ton of confidence the Giants can beat them, they seem like a bad matchup. WR talent all over the place, good running game. Lawrence vs Thomas. Can we beat them in a shootout? We'll see. Jones will have to play really well after watching that DAL O.

Their offense looks very solid. Their defense is going to keep them from earning wins. This is game one of the regular season, so you need to take things with a grain of salt as well. Tampa lost a lot of key players in their secondary early last night, and both teams tossed the ball at an exceptionally high rate. Was almost like watching arena football.

Dallas showed more than anyone was really expecting, especially Dak coming off injury. They didn't get the all important dub at the end of the night, but they look like they're going to be a problem for the division.

Bucs secondary is also trash and the Giants, on paper, is one of the best in football, Dak is not going to have wrs running free against the giants

Dallas had that ball coming out quick, and to all the targets on the field. Teams will attack weak spots and even the Giant secondary has some that will need to step up...slot CB, and middle LBs and Peppers in coverage.

they are looking much, much better.

I was thinking about this during the game last night too, that the Giants play those 2 teams three times. We haven't seen what the Giants are capable of yet, but I don't get the sense that they match up particularly well with Dallas. Dallas protects the QB, and our pass rush is very unproven. Giants secondary is good, but can they hold up against 3 #1 receivers and a QB who can deliver accurate balls to these guys in stride? It'll take 30+ points to win games against both of these teams, and with the state of the Giants OL, I'm not convinced they can do that at this point.

I forget to put in my first post that the thing that's likely to hold them back the most is McCarthy. Dallas with a better HC probably wins last night

Yeah they might have the next best trio of WRs in the league next to the Bucs. Cooper, Lamb and Gallup are all bug fast physical guys. They caught just about everything thrown at them last night, and made some great contested catches. Moore is a very good OC, hopefully he leaves soon for a job elsewhere. But the offense is what’s going to keep them alive this year, unlike how our defense is built though and it should be perfect for stopping them. If our offense can’t take advantage of that defense they have then we don’t deserve the division.

yep...
Giants defense will not stop the Dallas Cowboys
M.S. : 9/10/2021 9:36 am : link

They can limit the damage and (hopefully) keep the point total down.

But that's not the worry.

What will our offense do?

If there isn't significant improvement over the past several years, 0-2 against the Cowboys.

Something like the Bucs are the first team to win a game having a -3 turnover ratio, over 100 yds in penalties, and giving up 450 passing yards (might have this a little wrong).

The Bucs were bad and handed it to the Cowboys. The Cowboys couldn't run the ball at all, and couldn't play defense at all. The Bucs easily should have had 40+ pts if they played ok. The Bucs also gave the Cowboys 2 turnovers deep in their own territory, and had penalties galore to extend drives. ALso I have no idea what the Bucs defensive backs were doing, and I'm not sure they did either

On any other Sunday this game would have handed 45 - 17 or so. I am not impressed with the Cowboys at all. In my opinion this game was more about TB's ineptitude than the Cowboys

Both team's run game was stoned.

Dallas D handled the run game just fine. They just couldn't stop Tom Brady.

Same could be said about the Bucs. Their D also stopped the run game, but they couldn't handle Dak Prescott.

I don't get it. People are saying they should have run the ball more, why? Against that front 7 and a massive talent differntial on the outside. The Bucs secondary isn't good and they only looked "good" last year because the Bucs score forcing teams to throw the ball and their front 7 pressure creates some gimmes. If you put them on a team with a mediocre front 7 they'd be getting torched all over the place.

Tampa is the least impressive very good/great team I've seen in a long time.

They won the SB in dominating fashion (perhaps aided by some factors), but couldn't dominate good teams last year. Postseason wasn't clear cut dominant either, could have lost any of the 3 games they played in.

Maybe Brady is the equalizing factors, allowing them to win close games. But overall as a team I think they're a bit overrated.
