A very painful realization

Anakim : 9/12/2021 7:10 pm
The only solace I take in a losing season is that I know that we'll be picking very high in the draft. It makes me hopeful that the Football Giants will draft a difference-maker with such a high pick and it'll be the beginning of the turnaround for this franchise.

Well:

2015 - Ereck Flowers - 9th overall

2016 - Eli Apple - 10th overall

2018 - Saquon Barkley - 2nd overall - and I'll fully admit that he's the only one I wanted at #2 if we didn't/couldn't trade down

2019 - Daniel Jones - 6th overall

2020 - Andrew Thomas - 4th overall

Look, every team misses, but you CANNOT miss on so many top-10 picks.

Did any of the beats confirm that someone was actually going to jump up and take Jones between 6 and 17 or was that completely fabricated bullshit from Gettleman?

I actually pointed out that he and Shep were like the lone bright spots on offense, but one good game doesn't take away the fact that he's been disappointing up until now. But yes, I guess there is still some hope for him.

We need ownership to stop defending their mistakes. DG should go tomorrow just to let fans know that this season wont be lost. Judge has used up all his good will by putting together a team that is clearly not ready, picking his coordinators including4 OL coaches and Jones needs to be shelved. Maybe book smart with leadership skills but still you have got to be able to perform and he simply can’t. Not accurate, panics and makes bad decisions. It’s Groundhog Day again in Jersey.
They couldn’t trade Barkley to the Ravens

He didn't get embarrassed in the pass game today. Is that really the standard for a #4 pick playing well?

Over Tristan Wires and Rashawn Slater.

But it goes so much deeper than that. Jason Garrett is the offensive coordinator. Dave Gettleman is the GM.

Aside from Judge, who has an old-school nature to him, this team seems like a total organization run by relics the game of football had passed long ago.

Drafting, personnel management, playbook development, scheming, everything. It's humiliating to watch this level of shit football today.

It's a disgrace.

of points:

My vague recollection is that some Giants scouts gave Flowers a third round grade, but I admit my memory is hazy. Of course, Flowers is at least still in the league, and got a huge deal from Miami a few years ago.

Apple was just a bad pick. I understand them passing on Tunsil because of his "bong" incident, but they had to do better.

I wanted Barkley or Darnold, but I also remember that the Browns offered both their second round picks to move up to #2 from #4.

Somebody would have taken Jones before #17. This is a QB starved league. Remember Christian Ponder?

The jury is still our on Thomas.
AND...
Danthebigbluefan : 9/12/2021 7:24 pm : link
Not only does this look like a bad team...

But it's a VERY expensive bad team!! We have no freakin' cap space ... AND we suck?

Gettleman can GTFOH.

How can you pass on Aaron Donald, and still be able to get Davante Adams?!?! wow..

Think about it, even if you needed a WR that bad you could still get one in the 2nd rd. Stay safe and get defensive player in AD. Giants should of stuck with what made them so successful in the past. 2 SB wins. The trenches is key on both sides of the ball.

Hey, I'm told we needed another weapon for Jones. So Toney made so much sense.

Meanwhile, Slater was a stud today in his debut. And Wirfs is, well, on his was to the Pro Bowl.

And I realize that today was just the first game of a long season. But what I came away with today is that when Jones needs to come up big, he comes up small. Not just the fumble. On another play where Barkley was sitting open in the middle, he threw to Shep on the sideline and the pass was broken up. Barkley was a non-factor. Maybe the only thing to take from today is that he came out healthy and may be more dynamic and confident going forward. I'm still hopeful, but right now it's looking like Jones and Barkley are part of the problem, not part of the solution. And if they both wash out this year, there is not way Getty stays on. Shit

I don't feel hopeful. He fucked up 3 top 6 picks three years in a row. Peart looks like a lost cause, Jones is garbage and Barkley is still a dancer who has no burst right now. This whole thing sucks.

Either Aaron Donald or Zach Martin were the correct choices. We chose Beckham. Which at first looked great but ended up being a mistake.

Stop. Beckham single handily won the giants a #of football games and Aaron Donald is great but he came with risk at tbe time.

Every pick carries risk. There were a lit of people clamoring for Donald in that draft, me included. They didn't pick him because his physical measurements didn't fir what they normally look for at the position. Dumb. The guy was a wrecking ball in college, completely dominant, and there really was nothing left to see. That pick and the Engram pick over Ramczyk were the two that bothered me, but I'll admit, I was happy when I saw how good OBJ was. But Donald was still the better pick. He's going to go down as one of the greatest defensive players of all time. However when OBJ was setting receiving records in his first couple of years, I thought he'd be one kf the greatest receivers of all time. Really unfortunate that he took the injuries he did but also that he became a diva here.

Still, as a fan, I want to see OBJ recapture the magic.

In terms of Saquon, I think he's going to be better than ok, he's going to be fantastic, and soon. People forget this was his first game back. And he drew a lot of defensive attention from the Broncos right away. That in and of itself has value.

He also had at least one really nice blitz pickup today that I saw. But I think he was testing everything for the first time today and it's going to be a couple or few weeks until he's all the way back. But when he is, he'll be special.

I'm far more discouraged with what I saw from Daniel Birddog Jones today. Which should be his new nickname.

For him to make the jump he has to start manipulating the defense with his head, eyes, and arm (pump/shoulder fakes). It's not something I see in his game at all.

I don't want to overreact to one game, but I was hoping to see a lot more from him today. I wanted to see progress and that wasn't evident at all. There's a chance that what we're seeing is a plateau from him, hopefully not his ceiling.

If this is who he is, he's not good enough, and they will need to start identifying a replacement.

For all the talk about the OL, they were adequate today. A good QB performs and executes with what he had today. Good QBs don't need dominant protection, they need adequate protection. And I didn't see a OL that was overwhelmed today. I saw a QB that, when he had a pocket, still made poor decisions with the football. He may lack that killer instinct the great ones have.
