What do you truly think is the problem with the Giants?

NY-Fan : 9/12/2021 7:28 pm
I will be honest I have been watching football my whole life and can't truly put my finger on what is the problem with this team. Why they have been so bad and there is no improvement year in and year out is hard to put a finger on.

Is it the front office
Head coaches
Offensive coordinators
Defensive coordinators
QB's
Offensive players
Defensive players
Bad Drafts
Poor free agents
Bad management of cap space
Just a losing culture they can't change or something else?

They look like a team that does not belong in the NFL most of the time the past couple of years. I keep thinking they are making solid decisions and moves yet they remain the same.

It reminds me of my company. No matter how much they change our staff, change policies, try to boost moral and culture and many other things it pretty much remains the same.

we have sucked for who knows how long so why did the starters not play a half every preseason game. Its not like they are good and don't need the work. It makes no sense to me they are not ready to play real football.
Yes

That is the one common denominator.
Garrett
GoDeep13 : 9/12/2021 7:34 pm : link
Is #1 on my list. Never liked the hiring. Yes Jones has turned the ball over. His worst turnover season was his rookie year and he still was able to lead a competent offense. This offense under Garrett feels like we are clawing and scratching to get one damn first down. We don’t threaten teams deep or use route combinations to free guys up and play leverage. Jones may not be Josh Allen but he can give us more that what Garrett’s play calling allows.
These games are won before they are played...
bw in dc : 9/12/2021 7:35 pm : link
So most of what you have seen the last week in a result of a lousy owner and incompetent player personnel management.
Ownership
richynyc : 9/12/2021 7:36 pm : link
...when you stink for nearly 10 years and field a team that is non-competitive for all that time, despite changes in GM's, multiple coaches and under-performing premium draft picks, it's on ownership. Sadly, NY has had too many inferior owners in too many sports.

That offense was competent in no small part because he had Pat Shurmer doing for him what he just did for Bridgewater this afternoon.
Has to be Mara
sharp315 : 9/12/2021 7:38 pm : link
Which is unfortunate because I really like John Mara but Reese mostly sucked and Gettleman has been possiby worse. Gettleman has done this team 0 favors since stepping into his role. His arrogance is baffling. Things snowballed after the DJ pick because it's hard to let a GM walk right after he drafts your "future" QB but that's probably what should have happened as they were letting Shurmur go.
It has been and always will be John Mara

The problem is Mara
Go Terps : 9/12/2021 7:40 pm : link
This organization's penchant for using its own history to inform present day decisions is incredibly destructive.

Dave Gettleman should not be the GM.
You do not build a team around a running back.
You can not call Ernie Accorsi in 2019 to pick your quarterback.
Daniel Jones is not Eli Manning.

Like his father, John Mara needs an outside voice to come in and save the day. I'm wondering whether BBI should pool money together to fly a banner over the stadium - that would resonate with someone as wrapped up in nostalgia as John Mara.

John Mara things he is a football guy, that’s the problem
Sean : 9/12/2021 7:45 pm : link
Beyond that, he thinks the Mara’s are a “football family” - they are not. They all need to get out of the way. Not a bad time for the Tisch side to step up and force some changes. Too many yes men in the building.
I expected the offense to take some time.

It's the QB position
allstarjim : 9/12/2021 7:49 pm : link
Obviously. It's not the owner, that's ridiculous.

We do not have a QB that has demonstrated winning football and haven't for a long time. That doesn't mean the current one can't become that, but time is running out.

But today wasn't encouraging. It's a QB-driven league. You need a guy that's going to not just make quick decisions, but the right decisions, quickly, then have the athleticism, accuracy, touch, timing, and awareness to execute them with precision.

My thinking is that Garrett's offense nor play-calling is the issue, it's the guy executing it. I hope he gets a lot better and quickly, but today was the first game where I said to myself, this is probably just who he is.

The GM search in 2018 by Accorsi, so he could pick his friend Gettleman, was really insulting to the fan base who saw right threw the charade.

As I've said multiple times, the Maras seem like good people. But they are not football saavy.

I know someone who used to do AV at the stadium. He said the Giants org was the worst to deal with. Irrational direction that would contradict what they just asked for a moment ago. He actually said the Jets org wasn't so bad. Go figure.
The Giants are the opposite of complimentary football

We played for a low scoring game on offense. The defense didn't...

When the Broncos went on every 4th down....I knew, their coaches took control.....

Very disappointed how our coaches managed this game.

Sure a ton of players made mistakes.....but they were not put in position to be successful.
I said it in the post game thread...
EricJ : 9/12/2021 8:04 pm : link
it is simple.... we cannot control the line of scrimmage on either side of the ball. That is what wins games and wins championships. It is not sexy and I know some of you guys like your shiny toys... but it is all about controlling the line. We are getting beaten at the point of attack. This has been our problem for years.

We have not been able to run the ball in forever. Our QBs have been running for their lives for what also seems like forever. The last time we did that to teams was more than a decade ago.

Bingo, I don't know how you can say anything about the players today when the coaching staff got their ass handed it to them and it looked like our OC and DC were on total different wavelenghts and that falls at the feet of Judge.

Plus not calling that timeout there was the literal definition of coaching scared and made the Broncos decision to go for at midfield on 4th down fucking easy. If Judge says anything at his presser other than taking full respnosibility his Mr. Accountability shtick goes way out the window with players and its the beggining of the end. Coaches have to be accountable too and it was awful today.
All games start and won on the lines!
Carl in CT : 9/12/2021 8:11 pm : link
Our OL might be the worst in football. Your QB shouldn’t be your leading rusher. Subtract his yards we had what 20 yds for the game. So they get my vote! The defense is a close second. You can’t run the ball and the OL is weak then you can’t blame the QB.

for more than ten years. Flowers, Pugh, Richberg, and a diner-full of FA vets... and we still haven't even been able to reach mediocrity.

Since SB 46, our backs have had nowhere to run and our quarterbacks have had no time to pass.
Ownership
AcesUp : 9/12/2021 8:27 pm : link
And the compulsion to look backwards instead of forwards. Every decision over the last 5+ years has been made off that inflection point. Mara thinks like a homer fan nostalgic for the past and many of the over arching decisions have been made off that bias. There has been a monumental shift in the rules and information available to decision makers. The reluctance to acknowledge either of those two massive variables are predominantly why we're here. A lot of fans will nitpick this decision or that...but it's systemic. Short of running pure, the Giants are drawing dead in terms of actually contending.

and by extension, ownership, which kept the GM search "in the family".

Saquon and Jones were awful picks. Thomas doesn't look much better. This team is ass, and it starts from Gettleman

To be fair, Thomas didn't look bad today. Barkley and Jones were terrible picks though.
I think it comes down
cjac : 9/12/2021 9:12 pm : link
To drafting poorly.

Look at our first 3 draft picks the last 4 years.

How many of those picks are top NFL players?

Our best 3 players are Martinez, Bradbury and L Williams. 2 FAs and a trade.
I’ve seen more imagination in high school offenses
NJ_GIANTS : 9/12/2021 9:23 pm : link
Jason Garrett has to go!

I didn’t like the way we ran today. There was no bounce or cut to the hole. Our QB was the best runner except for the fumble.

Jones tends to bird dog his WRs… dude needs to learn to look off to move the coverage, pump fake, something to help. We need some play action. Bring screen to Barkley, get him into space.
