I know there was a lot of back and forth between posters about the importance of preseason games and how sometimes they are viewed as meaningless. I think it is time we start to reconsider how Judge looks at preseason games. Maybe they are a lot more important than what we view them as.
While controlled scrimmages, lives hitting in practice, and contact drills are important - it still does not beat going into a game situation, getting into a huddle, lining up, crowd noise, and everything that goes into a game. Even if it is going against 2nd and third stringers, routines are quite different from a game and a controlled scrimmage. This team for years (under TC, McAdoo, Shurmur, and now Judge) come out the first few weeks looking woefully underprepared. And yes there is talent issues, however being non-competitive to start the year is just inexcusable.
We have an inexperienced OL, a QB who struggled last year and a lot of young and new guys coming in. Sitting the majority of them the first two games proved to be a mistake. And before you look up - yes Teddy Bridgewater played in all 3 preseason games. And he looked just fine.
You cannot worry about injuries when you lack talent. Its football. Guys get hurt. Our starters needed to play more and sit less as if they have everything down pat. We dont have a QB like a Mahomes, Wilson, Rodgers, etc that has everything down pat.
While Judge says all the right things, he did not have the team prepared yesterday and didnt know the rules about the challenge flag (dont tell me he did it on purpose, because if he did - thats even worse wasting a TO.)
That was one of the most depressing losses because I was hopeful that we would start the year with some hope and something to look forward too. Now all we have is hoping the Bears will be bad as us and teams like Detroit, Houston, and Jacksonville win games - so we have a shot at maybe a Thibodeaux and a Rattler.
A whole bunch of new guys, and young guys needs reps and playing time. Plus, it looked like our defense needed some more time too. Confidence and success can be built upon in preseason.
Judge needs to start winning games to live up to his reputation. 6-11. Does he know what he's doing or is he another Belichick tree mirage?
In fact, would it have been so bad for the starting offense to play significant minutes in the preseason and maybe dominate an opponent’s second string unit? Maybe some confidence building and settling into routine?
I know they wanted to use games as a "tryout" for the reserve OL, except the only thing that happened there was the coaches decided to cut everybody and replace them with other team's favorable depth at the position. And I don't imagine DJ's final preseason game made anybody really comfortable in the front office or coaching staff.
Until the team starts showing better (or as well as its competition) early in the season, it is difficult to support the NYG mindset for preseason games.
I mean - it goes both ways. The Rams played absolutely nobody in preseason and looked amazing last night

The Rams are also a veteran laden team with the majority of players back. Stafford, while new, has been in the league for over a decade. And is a good QB.
Jones is still young and not good. Not giving him reps along with the OL - is just inexcusable.
I will say though Denver's play on offense was anything great but keep in mind they had a full blown QB competition all summer. Meaning the #1's played together a LOT.
We can cray about the offense BUT, the defense lost the game. They couldn't get off the field to save their lives. They were worn out by the end of the 3rd qtr. Our offense was hardly on the field.

The Offense can be blamed for hardly beingn on the field too.
They had a couple zero effect 3 and out drives.
Most notably when backed up against the endzone and running 3 give up plays and punting.

The Rams plugged in a very good QB into a team stacked with decent talent. Stafford was an upgrade over Goff, so that was not unexpected. Add to that they have a creative offensive mind!
They can afford to look at the preseason in such a way when you have a unit like that. For me, I understand the injury risk but for a team like the Giants you cannot look at it like that IMO. I've said a few times, but this team got a little hot last year but needed help to get into the playoffs which they didn't get. To use the first few weeks of the regular season to get right will have them in the same position. And then to see the performance we saw yesterday on opening day in front of the home crowd for the first time in over a year and honoring 9/11....just WOW...extremely disappointing.

They look like the same offense. Pre-season playing time isn't the cause or the answer to where we are.

Do you really expect to see a major improvement next week? I don't.
NFL is about player TALENT. Especially QB talent. We have a major talent deficiency. Lousy drafts have left team needing to acquire expensive free agents. We have a terrible team with a maxed out salary cap and need for a new QB. A recipe for long term pain. They'll always be my team, but this organization is as bad a any in NFL
What's inexcusable is the coaches having all year to prep and thats the gameplan we got (on both sides of the ball)

Unfortunately, majority of NFL teams now view the preseason as “don’t get hurt” instead of “let’s play a lot so we can get some rhythm”

McVay has been doing his day 1 and he took over a very bad Rams team with a second year Goff, the preseason doesn't matter.
